Giovannino Oliviero Giuseppe Guareschi, also know as Giovanni Guareschi, was a Italian journalist, writer, humorist. Along with Giovanni Mosca and Giaci Mondaini he founded the humorous magazine "Candido". He was well know because of the "Don Camillo" series based on the stories about the two main characters: Don Camillo, the priest and Peppone, the communist Mayor.

Don Camillo and I go back a long time, together with Fleming and Charteris I discovered this in my parents bookcollection and unlike the other two writers here was no problem. My upbringing was unlike my mum not very religiously biased she always told me if I wanted religion I could choose this when I was old enough. By the age of ten no kid voluntarily goes anywhere near a church but somehow this Italian village priest who talked with Christ our lord and many subjects and our saviour having a wicked sense of humor when it came to this particular priest was oddly attractive.
This installment is one of the later books I did not read before and I believe was written shortly before the author’s demise.
The book is about the next generation of that quirky little town near the river Po where Peppone is still the mayor and Don Camillo still the shepherd of his flock.
Major new characters are Camillo’s niece Flora who comes to live with her uncle and there is a certain generation gap the size of the Grand Canyon. Then there is the youngest son of Peppone popular called Venom and is the leader of the local motorbike gang. Add a progressive young priest called Don Chichi who becomes the bane of Camillo’s life and you know that life brings its little stories.
These telling are all little stories and can be seen as many selfcontained chapters for a bigger telling.
While still political you see that time has passes and Camilo & Peppone are the older generation that is looked upon the flowerpower generation as backwards instead of looking forward. While the newer generation with its long hair is called hippies. It is bound to clash.

In this novel Camillo and his dialogues with our lord are less frequent and less wicked. But it is a Christ on the cross contemplates he started of as a kind of hippie too so many thousand years ago.

I still can see Fernandel as the face of Camillo and will watch the movies with Easter 🐣 again like each year again. Like I said Camillo and I go back a long time and on occasion we meet like old friends.
I really enjoyed this new unread collection of stories, maybe I watch the Terrence Hill Don Camillo this year too.

دن کامیلو، کشیشی است باهوش، رند، ساده، خوش‌قلب، جوانمرد، خشن، مومن، زورمند، لجوج... روستایی؛ په پونه نیز مردی است زورمند،لجوج، خوشقلب، مهربان، خشن، ساده‌لوح، جوانمرد، جزم‌اندیش، کم سواد، با روحیه‌ای نامستحکم، مایل به حیله‌گری اما ناتوان از آن، روستایی و ... کمونیست. محیط عمل و میدان تعارض این دو شخصیت، قصبه‌ای است در کنار رودخانه‌ای در حاشیه یکی از شهر‌های ایتالیایی: دن کامیلو کشیش این قصبه است وبه په پونه شهردار آن، که در عین حال مکانیک قصبه هم هست. و این دو، به لحاظ اختلاف دو ایدئولوژی و بینشی که بدان پایبندند، دائم با هم گلاویز... نیز باید به وجود یک شخصیت سوم هم در این "دنیای کوچک" اشاره کرد. این شخصیت مجسمه عیسی مسیح است که بر فراز محراب کلیسا نصب شده و در جریان وقایع، گاه به دخالت‌هایی ظریف، ما حاصل را به خیر و عافیت می‌کشاند و در نتیجه، هر چند ظاهراً در پایان هر ماجرا نوعی تعادل و توازن بین دو عنصر نمادین داستان( کشیش و شهردار مارکسیست ) برقرار می‌شود، اما حضور و دخالت مجسمه، نیروی کشیش را کمی "مساوی‌تر" می‌کند.

Ho scoperto recentemente che questa versione (al tempo, "ufficiale") del libro si discosta dagli scritti originali d'autore. I testi furono qui e là limati da interventi editoriali atti a stemperare le eventuali polemiche politiche e con il Vaticano. L'autore, stanco e socialmente sfiduciato da una vita di battaglie, lasciò fare. Anche il testo in sé risulta meno brillante e positivo dei precedenti, pur mantenendo la cifra stilistica che ha reso Guareschi famoso, e tradotto in tutto il mondo. I lettori del nuovo millennio possono trovare comunque in queste storie una serie innumerevole di spunti per riflettere, o per sorridere, non ostante le vicende narrate e l'Italia qui descritta siano quasi ...fossili ('quasi', perché ancora si trova in giro più di qualche patetico combattente giapponese, che non accetta il cambio di ...era).
I conoscitori, invece, possono leggere direttamente la versione originale, e più salata, di questi scritti Guareschiani, pubblicata successivamente dai figli con il titolo (originale) di Don Camillo e don Chichì.

آخرین کتاب از مجموعه داستان‌های دن‌کاملیو...
تقابل نسل جدید با دن‌کامیلو و پپونه. نسل جدیدی که سرکش و طغیان‌گر است و به هیچ‌کدام از سنت‌ها و طرز فکرهای جاری، اعتنایی ندارد.
کشیش و کمونیست کهنه‌کار دیگر سنی ازشان گذشته و هاج و واج به این تغییر نسل نگاه می‌کنند.

دن‌کامیلو تمام شد ... ای کاش ادامه داشت...

E' di moda il ruggito della pecora
Ho letto recentemente "Diario clandestino", "Il grande diario" e "Ritorno alla base" e mi ero innamorata di Giovannino.
Desideravo confermare il piacere di leggerlo anche attraverso i suoi personaggi più famosi: Peppone e don Camillo, di cui avevo solo lontani ricordi in bianco e nero, per quelle vecchie pellicole proiettate nel salone parrocchiale.
Ho trovato per caso questo "Don Camillo e i giovani d'oggi", nascosto nella mia libreria, dimenticato da non so quanto tempo e quanti traslochi...
L'ho letto dunque subito, con grande aspettativa, benché non rientrasse, proprio quello, nella mia lista desideri.
Ma mi ha deluso: non vi ho trovato quella sensibilità e quella partecipazione che mi aspettavo; sentivo i personaggi distanti; vedevo le situazioni scontate e banali; anche l'umorismo mi è sembrato opaco.
Forse sono stata solo sfortunata, incappando in una delle sue prove non migliori, degli ultimi anni di vita.
Le tre stelle sono più di fiducia per Guareschi, che per il libro.
Sicuramente proverò con qualche altro titolo.

E' la nuova ipocrisia: un tempo i disonesti tentavano disperatamente d'essere considerati onesti. Oggi gli onesti tentano disperatamente d'essere considerati disonesti.

P.S. Altre occasioni si sono poi presentate, prima fra tutte mi piace ricordare Don Camillo: mondo piccolo.

Questo libro mi è piaciuto molto per le sue battute spiritose. Racconta le peripezie di un prete di un paese (Don Camillo) in continuo disaccordo con il sindaco (Peppone). In questo paesino sono arrivati i cappelloni, uno di questi il capo di una banda si chiama Michele Bottazzi detto Veleno figlio del sindaco. Una ragazza capo degli scorpioni, un'altra banda di cappelloni, è Elisabetta detta Cat nipote di Don Camillo. Tutti insieme combinano un sacco di guai in quel paesino dell'Emilia Romagna.

It has taken me half a lifetime to read a Don Camillo story. At university a bookish student friend had found them hilarious and I always felt I needed to acquire (and read) one. Each Don Camillo book contains short episodes in the life of a fat elderly village priest who has a hot temper and is full of bluster although he has the good of his community at heart. I enjoyed especially Don Camillo's down-to-earth chats with Christ at the altar when he needs guidance, and how he and his sworn enemy, the Communist mayor Peppone, constantly try to outwit each other. On googling I discover that G Guareschi was a journalist interned in a concentration camp in WWII and that satire is embedded in Don Camillo's irascible exchanges with everyone. I didn't pick up the political innuendo; for me the stories are just fun, a bit silly with lots of slapstick violence between gangs and a caricature of his niece Flora, yet Don Camillo's love for his fellow man and concern to do right by his pal The Christ, is never in doubt. I loved both the understatement and hyperbole - the translator L K Conrad did a masterly job.

Quase todas as coisas de que Dom Marcel Lefebvre se queixou amargamente em 1970 estavam antecipadas com graça conformada neste livro de 1969, escrito entre 1966 e 1968. Que pena que só conheci Guareschi e Dom Camilo agora, e justamente pelo último livro da série. E que delícia esse Frei Tuck parmesão, que desce o braço sem dó nos seus fiéis, grita e se descabela como bom carcamano, e fica perplexo com as bobajadas Vaticano II que seu auxiliar despeja sem parar. O título original é "Don Camillo e i giovani d'oggi", Dom Camilo e os jovens de hoje, que hoje andam pelos setenta e poderiam ser meus pais. A linguagem é seca e escorreita, e o senso de humor, quando foge do maluco das situações, é um wit maligno, sempre atenuado por um Jesus mais complacente do que os homens.

Don Camillo e i giovani d'oggi (1969, 18 racconti) -
Siamo negli anni '60, gli anni del Concilio Vaticano II e della "rivoluzione culturale" della Cina di Mao, Mondo piccolo è sconvolto dalla società dei consumi e del benessere e dall'apertura alle sinistre.
Peppone gestisce un emporio dove vende a rate automobili, motociclette ed elettrodomestici di ogni genere, e deve fare i conti con le malefatte dell'ultimogenito Michele detto "Veleno".
Non cessano gli scontri con don Camillo, il quale è alle prese con un pretino progressista (don Chichì), che parla un linguaggio incomprensibile al vecchio parroco. Il Vescovo, infatti, gli ha mandato un giovane prete "rivoluzionario" per illustrargli le nuove teorie in materia religiosa e i capisaldi del buon cattolico progressista. Don Camillo è inoltre impegnato in un compito difficile: rimettere sulla retta via "Cat" (Elisabetta), la nipote ribelle non ancora ventenne.

Quando li, em uma das vidas passadas, certamente não sabia das dificuldades que o aggiornamento do Vaticano II trouxe para a Igreja, nem que pudesse haver alguma resistência a ele.
Menos ainda que padres progressistas não fossem apenas uma caricatura literária.
O livro é delicioso, os capítulos quase autônomos, os personagens - todos - adoráveis (inclusive os que tentam infernizar o velho padre).
E o que a Igreja de hoje passa, estava lá, há sessenta anos, sendo plantado por uns e exposto - com humor e carinho - pelo Dom Camilo.

Rereading this at a later age, I realize how much violence is in these books, and how often it seems so off-handed. So, it is nice to know that we are progressing in that way. In the meanwhile, there are many good thoughts -- both sides we get to see, and in this book more like four [at least!] sides. It is sad that this is the final book. Maybe one day someone inspired by these will pick up and write more -- although it might be the small world of Don Chichi by then.

What was I smoking three years ago??? How did I not realize what the book had evolved into??? The earlier Don Camillo novels are sweet books on a conflict between communism and the church through the lens of the warm hearted headstrong communist mayor Peppone and an equally stubborn well meaning priest Don Camillo. With ofcourse, Christ trying his best to reign in his hot headed priest.

This book was far more. Probably written more than a decade later, maybe the late 1960s versus the earlier ones written in the 1950s, the political satire in this book is pronounced. It brings to attention the indifference of politicians in the face of famine and flood, the hypocrisy of the church and its easy forgetting of what god stands for, the rigidity of bueauracracy in socialist times that can impede development?? And the delusion of youth that can make them hell raisers fighting establishment instead of doing good....Its actually weird.. not all the points made seem valid from a generic point of view, but from one embracing the village of Don Camillo it seems so right!!

The entire stand on war... on materialism... god.m religion...amazing! As Christ tells Don Camillo, at one time, I was also an anti establishment Long Hair!

I always love the journey of getting into a Don Camilo. This one was incredibly sweet too, but, had less of Peppone and more of the next generation which wasn't as adorable.

Dopo aver attraversato il dopoguerra ed essersi confrontati con la Guerra Fredda, Don Camillo e Peppone finiscono per si ritrovarsi negli scontri sociali e generazionali del ‘68. Veleno e Cat (rispettivamente figlio del secondo e nipote del primo) rubano in parte la scena alle due icone dell’universo di Guareschi, ma si inseriscono perfettamente nella filosofia del Mondo Piccolo evidenziando contraddizioni e similitudini nascoste nelle opposte correnti di pensiero che ancora attraversano l’Italia di quel periodo.

Whilst I didn't dislike this book I'm not sure I liked it either. Very gentle & now quite dated humour but reckon it would make an excellent TV series.

El progreso está llegando al pueblo de don Camilo y del alcalde Peppone. A la iglesia de nuestro peculiar y ortodoxo párroco acude don Chichí, un sacerdote que pretende modernizarlo con las nuevas ideas del Concilio Vaticano II; también hay nuevos aires en el ayuntamiento donde un grupo maoísta se enfrenta al estalinismo irredento de Peppone y los suyos.
