I normally give all the books I read "5 stars"; if I've read them all the way through, usually they deserve six!
I've just finished, no more than 2 minutes ago, and am dizzy and numb from all I have been exposed to in this complex story, entitled in a direct English translation: "The Great Crossroads ".
...Lessons learned?
-Life was hard back then. So were SOME of the people. -"Humans are not good people." ~ A quote I borrow from Bill Maher -When you come to a crossroad in life, be aware that the road you don't chose someone else inevitably will. Chose wisely.
I found this book in an old school in Norway that was to be closed permanently. It was among many other books that were to be "recycled" as heat-producing trash. (...Somehow I think that sounds less ominous than "burned".)
It was written in a country at a time when good and evil, new and old, and temporary and permanent were all fighting to take control over a wet, cold place that had very little value in the overall global picture.
I doubt many (...if any?) would read this book with the same obligation as those students at Nordstrand Videregående Skole must have had. ...But I am eternally grateful that I crossed paths with it.
