Nikole Sheri Hannah-Jones was born on the 9th of April 1976 to an African-American father and a white mother of Czech and English descent. She grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, a predominantly white city. Growing up. She was often the darkest-skinned girl in the entire area regardless of being mixed race. She came from a working-class family in Iowa and attended a very rich and upper-class school due to a desegregation program. The disparity between her situation and that of her schoolmates and the racial dynamics of their relationships did not go unnoticed by Hannah-Jones.
She attended the University of Notre Dame where she received her Bachelor of Arts in History and African-American studies. She then graduated from the University of North Carolina’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media in 2003. In 2015, Hannah-Jones became a staff writer for The New York Times. The 1619 Project is Hannah-Jones’ joint venture with The New York Times aimed at changing the way slavery is viewed in the United States. She’s considered a voice of authority on racial inequalities, and her work is cited widely.
