Settling is the second book in the Solid series by Shelley Workinger. It's a young adult science fiction story about teens with special abilities they acquire from chromosomal mutation before birth. I do not recommend reading this book, or this review, before reading book 1, Solid. I loved Solid, the characters, the dramatic plot, everything about it. When I was asked to read and review book 2 I was, and still am, thrilled.
The reader is once again trapped in the Army camp that Clio and her friends came to, to find out the extent and magnitude of their abilities and better understand them. Every fun and amazing character is present, plus some new ones. Settling begins with everyone getting back into life following all the events of Solid. All of the kids have been given jobs based on their abilities and are all acting, or trying to act, like normal teens again.
On the surface everything seems to be going great. Jack and Clio make up the resident cute couple, Miranda is still a pain, Bliss is still sweet, Garrett is still as arrogant as ever, and together they create a close circle. Things are looking up, until someone at the camp comes up dead and everyone is a suspect. Then things begin to shift in all sorts of ways. As more incidents occur propelling the story into a crime scene, some relationships begin to get rocky.
Settling also introduces us into a bunch of new characters. A great personality that adds to the all around atmosphere of the book was Trudy, who has taken over for Janet. While her part in Settling is small, she's kind of a mother hen; warm and dependable. I really liked her. We are also introduced to Graham, who is cute and not much older than Clio, they work together trying to figure out a curriculum that will keep everyone together for the school year. And we have 2 new students aboard, Rae and Xavier who add some more diversity to an already populated camp. I will say in the who's the hottest of the group, Xavier has my vote!
So, I obviously loved the book why 4 stars? It's really 4.5-4.75 stars and it's only because I didn't find the beginning of the book to be very eventful. It's more of a build up to the middle and end of the book, which was phenomenal and definitely not what I expected. When I finished the story and put it down I had all these emotions running through me; I was upset that it was over, happy that there's another book coming, and going over what happened in my head all at once. The world of Solid, as we know it, is completely changed. Shelley knows how to write a series that will keep readers coming back book after book. Book three will certainly be a new experience and I can't wait!
It's an amazing series, I can't stress that enough, read it! Look for book 3, Sound, coming soon!

A couple months ago I read Solid by Shelley Workinger. I had no clue what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. When I was asked to be a part of the blog tour for the sequel, I, of course, said yes. I thought Solid was good but Settling was awesome! I can't believe the third book doesn't come out until next summer!
Clio Kaid has finally found the place where she belongs. She has a great group of friends and maybe even a boyfriend. Too bad things can't stay that way forever especially when there is a murder on campus. The attacks keep happening and Clio has no clue how to make campus safe again. Worst of all she seems to be pushing all her friends away and she doesn't quite know why. Will Clio figure out what is going on with her abilities and the murderer before its too late?
The story picks up right after the ending of Solid and it does not take long to be drawn back into the story. The first attack doesn't happen until about sixty pages in but those first sixty pages are by no means slow. I was hooked just reading about the friendships, romance, and new characters. The attack just added to the already interesting story.
Clio was very easy to like in this book. She did some very stupid things but those things actually made me like her more. Her mistakes made her seem more human, more real. The rest of the cast of characters didn't seem to change much throughout the book but I still loved them. Garrett cracked me up and Jack was such a sweetheart. I can't wait for more of everybody! Well except maybe the psycho killer! =)
Overall, Settling is a great follow-up to Solid and if you haven't checked out this series already, do it now! It's kind of like the book version of X-Men. I think it will really appeal to all teens (and adults who love YA too.)

Okay… So maybe I’m slowly becoming a book blogger after all. Since I enjoyed the first book in Shelley Workinger’s Solid series (i.e. Solid), I had to review the second book; Settling.
Settling was a slower read than the first in the series, which was really good and I totally enjoyed. It gave me more time to get to know each character, especially Clio. Shelley shows us what’s going in inside Clio’s head and how she thinks. It gives perspective to how she acts and interacts with her circle of friends. And, although romance is not my genre of choice, I did enjoy the amount that was included in Settling. So, the slower first half of the book perfectly set up the exciting last half of the book.
As with Solid, once the action kicked in, I couldn’t put the book down. The events (I’m not going spoil it) unfolded naturally… Clio was not simply plopped conveniently into situations to save the day. The flow of the story line was believable and the happenings were realistic.
Which brings us to the ending… No, Clio did not ride off into the sunset, smiling and waving to all. And if she had, it would have been a terrible ending. I can’t say much without giving it away, but I will say that I really liked how it ended.
And dang it! Now I gotta read the next in the series, Sound, because you can’t just leave the series hanging where it did in Settling. It’s not fair! I’ll be waiting for Sound to be published and I’ll be one of the first in line to buy it.

Just wasn’t as entranced by this one as the first book. Clio’s thoughts were all over the place, and therefore the narrative seemed to jump from one plot line to another. I still really like the concept of the series and even the characters, but this 2nd book failed to keep my whole attention at times. I wanted there to be more scenes with Jack, and I also wondered what Clio’s motivations were for some of the decisions she made. Often she recognized her mistakes, which is great, but I still found myself wishing to read about a heroine who jumped to action and confronted situations head on instead of moping in her room and feeling sorry for herself.
This is a quick read with an interesting basis, but it failed to live up to its full potential, I think. What could have been a great continuance to Book 1 almost ended up being a repeat of Book 1. I didn’t feel like we got ahead at all plot-wise. That being said, I still find myself fascinated with these characters and the concept for the series. I love the whole “mutant” plot-line, so I’d really love to see more exploration about the teens’ abilities and what it means for their future. I didn’t find this to be the strongest book, but it still made me want to see where the next book will takes the series, which I think shows its overall worth.

First, I know it's not gracious to gloat - because it isn't - but I can't help but celebrate this:

Okay, now that I've got that off of my chest, onto the review...
Indeed a pine-worthy sequel, I've decided Settling is my favorite of the two books. Which is surprising because I've never really been a fan of sci-fi books, and yet I'm so drawn to this series, now even more so. I'm still confused as to why nobody has picked up on these books; they are amazing! Like, where is the buzz and hype when you need it? The series has great things going for it: kids with altered chromosomes and superhuman powers, psychopathic killers on the rampage, and ONE OF THE BEST TEEN GROUP OF FRIENDS I HAVE EVER 'MET'. I don't know if the caps did it for ya, but I'm serious. Clio and her friends are just packages of awesome that make you warm and laugh when you open them. This second book showed how the results of Solid strengthened their friendship and made them ten MILLION times more lovable.
And it's because of these characters that I could not get enough of this story! While the first book was an intro to the C9x project - the name for the chromosome that was altered within this collection of teens - and the abilities that came with this genetic mutation. Now, with Settling, the problems have escalated. I mean, one has to wonder how the general public would react to this group of mutated (that sounds worse than it is) teens gathered together by the military, like it's not unordinary, right? Hell, if it were me, I'd think the military was planning on putting together a teen assassin squad or superhuman soldiers! But, surprisingly, the military just want to help... or so it seems. And, unsurprisingly, Americans aren't too thrilled with the prospect of this project or the campus, with the kids all rounded up and together. (Can we say: HATERS much?)
This whole mess is stressful. I know, because I was reading it. But, imagine how Clio feels!? Poor girl is trying to keep it together, trying not to be worried for herself or her friends, all the while struggling with some interesting new... stuff. In the beginning, Clio and her friends were closer together, but this whole killer madness and all of the nonanswers provided by the government is stretching their nerves. I felt for them. I'd be bummed if nobody knew what was wrong with me, what this genetic alteration could effect in the future! Added to all that craziness, love is in the air! Triangle alert, though I won't say where or, more correctly, with whom. Though I'm a TAD frustrated as to the state of Bliss and Garrett's current lack of steamy romance! -_- Things better spice up between those two in Sound!
On the + side, Some new fun and intriguing people are added to the already fabulous mix of characters! Hullo, Xavier and Rae! Incoming. Two smokin' hotties, though (sadly) only one of the transfers is a boy, with unique powers to bring to the table, ones that can't quite be classified and leads everyone to believe that there's more to C9x then was imaginable... It just goes to show that there's more to C9x then meets the eye. Plus, there's Ford, the oh-so-delectable and please-come-here-and-kiss-me-cutie who's one of the military personnel on campus! Oh yeah, there was some ogling on my part... and Clio's.
Then, BAM! Everything went to hell, though not literally like in some books. Without warning, too. Well, maybe I knew what was going to happen, that everything was going to boil up to this one point and then there would be a dangerous explosion to shake things up. So what! I'm still not happy with how things turned out. Oh, it made sense. But, dammit, I can't help but feel hurt and upset and... and... needy. I'm hurt for my favorite set of friends and my lovely heroine, upset at the outcome of it all, and needy for the next freaking book! How can I possibly wait until the summer OF 2012 to find out more?!? No fair. Workinger, you play dirty.
Recommendation
If you're not really into thick reads, give Solid and Settling go. They are relatively short books packed with a lot of punch, I assure you. Plus if you're into paranormal/superhuman powers and sci-fi-ish action, this is your slice of cheesecake. Guaranteed winner, the first and second book. (But the second book more so, but shh! don't tell I said so.)

"Did you just call me a whale?" I responded with a calculated snarl once I'd reached him.
"Why are girls so hyper-sensitive?" he groaned. "You take everything so seriously."
"Why are boys so obtuse? They can't even tell when we're joking." I replaced the faux-offense with a wide grin. "Good to see you branching out, though," I went on. "Did you read the whole book?"
I took his choking as a negative answer, and modified my question. "Movie?"
"First four minutes," he admitted once his airway was clear. "That's all I could take." (11)

With a slightly darker tone, Settling was a fun and fast read. Though I did miss Clio's witty remarks and constant sarcasm from Solid, I enjoyed the fast paced plot and mystery surrounding the attacks.
Shortly after the events in Solid, people on campus are being attacked. As each person tries to deal with their feelings about staying on campus in light of this new threat, Clio becomes more and more withdrawn, distancing herself from her friends and family. I really couldn't connect to this Clio, as I didn't understand most of her actions. But neither did she.
I also had a hard time grasping Settling's timeline. Clio made numerous references to having messed things up with her friends, because she was so withdrawn. She also felt guilt for having abandoned them and for having spent so much time alone. But as far as I could tell, only a few days had passed. I didn't understand how the group had gone from being inseparable to strangers in such a short period.
As with Solid I wasn't overly attached to Clio's romantic interest, Jack, but I did really enjoy watching Clio learn that her attraction for him might not be based out of love for him as a person, but for the ideals he represented.
The plot was interesting enough, with the mystery surrounding the attacker creating a good amount of suspense, though I was surprised that Clio took so long to determine a key trait of the attacker. It would have been nice to see Clio uncover some clues before stumbling onto the identity of the attacker, but watching her battle with her raging emotions was a journey on its own! True to Solid's ending, Settling had the culprit laying out their entire devious plan, which of course, gave the proper authorities enough time to sweep in and save the day, causing a slight internal groan. Why don't these antagonists ever learn?
While there were things I missed from Solid, Settling was a decent middle book. While I don't feel like it really did much to advance the trilogy, it did showcase how everyone is growing into their abilities and showed a slightly more complex side to Clio, a character who, before, I would have written off as slightly simplistic and shallow. Settling also left enough questions unanswered for me to be interested to see what's going to happen with Clio and Ford - if anything - and to finally learn the truth about C9X.

Jack was perfect. So perfect that really only the law of opposites could say we belonged together, with me a full one-eighty in the other direction. It almost made me question if I'd fallen for him or the idea of him. Or, more accurately, the ideal of him. Wow. I don't think a book could be any worse in holding things that I hate. Selfish main lead character? Check. Obnoxiously perfect boyfriend? Check. Selfish main character cheating on obnoxiously perfect boyfriend? Double check. Blarg!
I'll start with Clio, the main character who does not deserve to have that title. Throughout the entire book, she complains to herself and shuts out all of her friends. Then, at the end of the book, as all her lost friends frolic into the sunset without her, what does she do? accept that she royally screwed up? No. She blames it on her new found 'heaviness' and says that they will come around eventually. Really? Why should they come around? You pushed all of them away since the beginning, and now that they are gone, you bitch about it.
Then there's the fact that, to my surprise, the 1st book was only telling of a week. One week. The group acts like they've known each other for freaking years! It doesn't matter the circumstances, no one is that chummy on the first week.
Now to the action, I mean, if there was any action. Which there wasn't. Besides finding a dead body, there is no suspense, no reason to keep reading. It was just so boring I wanted to throw the book across the room. the author has Clio mention the dead body every once in a while, but it really just takes a back seat to the horrid 'love triangle' that's going on. But I'll get to that soon enough. It was a boring read, with a few accidental funny parts, but not enough to make up for the lack of action.
A problem I have with the camp is that it is SO unrealistic. There is no way the government would spend so much money on so many kids just to keep them 'comfortable.' The part where they took everything from everyone's rooms, including paint color, is just stupid. No way in heck would the military waste tax payers dollars to decorate some rooms that they don't even know how long will be occupied! Just wouldn't happen. There's also the fact of them letting Miranda go 'all out' on the 4th of July party. Freaking gift baskets. For everyone. WHY??? And of course the military base would let kids shoot off fireworks in their base. 'Cause why not, right? *puff*
Now, to Jack. He is so, annoyingly perfect. No one is like that. But what do you do if you have an amazing boyfriend that you've known for, like, ever (a week, but same difference, right?)who adores you? Go off and kiss this other guy you've known for less time. As soon as she did that, my opinion of her burst like a balloon. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's cheating. If you've lost feelings for someone, let them go before you go off shoving your tongue down another guys throat! Then, Jack springs the 'L' word on her. After, what, a month!? Right, and through that month, they have barely seen each other, so I highly doubt that's gunna last. But even so, Clio repays his admission of love with telling him she kissed another guy. Smooth. But I do agree with telling him instead of letting it fester. At least she did something right.
Another thing that bothered me was how, every time she thought about Jack, she talked about how, "Jack was perfect. So perfect that only the law of opposites could say we belonged together, with me a full one-eighty in the opposite direction." page 175. And you know what? I totally agree with her. He doesn't deserve a two-timer like Clio, but it gets annoying and repetitive to hear it over and over again. And honestly, I don't even get why she kissed the other guy. A completely unnecessary 'plot-twist.'
So all in all, the book was just a waste of time. The only reason I finished it was because I was hoping it would get better. I had my parents order all three books, so I'm stuck with the third book that I honestly doubt I'll read.

Then, at the end of the book, as all her lost friends frolic into the sunset without her, what does she do? accept that she royally screwed up? No. She blames it on her new found 'heaviness' and says that they will come around eventually. Really? Why should they come around? You pushed all of them away since the beginning, and now that they are gone, you bitch about it.

Settling was a great follow up to Solid, and I was really excited to return to Clio’s world! All the characters were back and I felt we got to find out a few things about them that we didn’t see in the first book. Clio, for me, was quite different in this one. She was troubled, and on occasion acted quite selfishly which affected her likeability factor – I was a bit shocked at certain points about how bold she was being! But I still found she was easy to relate to, and a great main character. The fact that she had a great relationship with her mother was a big plus for me too, because it was nice to see a parent trying to be involved in their child’s life – these days, parents seem to be mysteriously absent in a lot of books. Being away from her mother, I could also kind of understand why Clio was feeling torn and acting the way she was – Jack, who was so sweet and adorable and basically the best boyfriend you could ask for, was gone a lot of the time, and Clio was feeling left out and lonely, and was unwittingly ignoring her friends at the same time. While I don’t condone what she did, I think at least she faced up to it and realised it was wrong. But maybe I’m biased, because I really loved Ford (a character I liked right from the moment he was introduced) and I enjoyed all moments between him and Clio (I’m a sucker for the bad/mysterious types!). I’m really curious as to what will happen between Clio, Ford and Jack next – especially after that ending! Shelley Workinger really knows how to pull you into the story – I was so sad the book ended because I just wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next!
Garrett was still my favourite character. I don’t know what it was about him, but he was just awesome and hilarious and I loved every single scene he was in! Settling was slower-pace that Solid but I quite liked it and I found that even though this was a book about genetically modified teenagers, it wasn’t all crazy, hyped-action all the time; there was still that element of teen life there, with normal teen problems and issues that everyone goes through at some point in their life. I think this made the book seem more realistic and believable, and definitely helped me connect to the characters and really feel involved within the story. I also found that the mystery was a lot more exciting in this one – in the first book, I sort of predicted the ending half-way through, but I wasn’t so sure this time and though I guessed a few things, there was a lot I didn’t see coming! I really enjoyed following Clio’s journey as she discovered more about herself and her powers, and I’m anxious to discover the full extent of what she can do! The ending was also very good and I’m really excited to read the next book.
Overall, Settling was a fabulous sequel that I enjoyed just as much as the first book! I think this is a great series and would definitely recommend it!

It's between 3 1/2 stars and 4 stars for me! :)
As I just finished the first book in the series, I was excited to get on with the series and see where the heroes were going.
I have to say that "Settling" was equally enjoyable as the first book in the series, mostly due to Workinger's "fun" way of writing. The banter and the sarcasm is there in a lot of interactions between the characters and the humor really had me giggling from time to time, which made this a very funny read. Don't get me wrong, this was no comedy, as things are getting more serious for Clio and her friends and that's not only due to the fact that somebody out there is killing people inside the campus, but also due to the fact that Clio herself and the others can feel changes in themselves as well.
Having decided to remain inside the campus and in a way facilitate its running, Clio, Garrett, Bliss, Jack, Miranda and Alexis find themselves busy with assignments and various works that need to be done. Clio (as a "leading" figure although she doesn't admit it even to herself), she gets closer to Lt Ford Graham as she helps me with the general running of the campus, providing insight and suggestions. He is smart, handsome, charming and only a few years older than her.
As our heroes realize that they are not as safe as they initially did - one dead, one injured in a matter of days- they struggle with ideas of what they could do. They get hate-mail from the "outside" from people who see them as a threat, but other than that, who would want to hurt teenagers who had done nothing wrong and whatever they were was through no fault of their own?
With the threat looming over them - yet Miranda intent on keeping the place socially active despite the possible peril - each person focuses on their tasks, Alexis with media, Garrett with recruiting, Jack with special forces and Bliss with the welcoming committee for two new "victims" of the genetic experiment. That leaves them less and less time to actually interact and sometimes Clio doesn't see Jack for days.
I liked the way the plot was built gradually and a sense of doom overhead lent a creepiness factor, but the revelation of the perpetrator left me a bit numb. Not that it was not believable or smart, but somehow I wish it was a bit "grander", you know? Maybe even hit closer home in a sense?
Still, it was neat and interesting and not at all far-fetched. I could really see a person act like that.
Also, I have to say that I'm officially in love with Garrett. He is downright hilarious, not to mention sexy, charming, smart and witty. I think I enjoyed him the most in this novel and Clio too, although her decision to lean towards Ford left me a bit mystified... Not because he wasn't worth it, but because Jack was her be-all up till then.
Then again, if teenagers are not allowed to get confused and overwhelmed by their emotions, I don't know who is! :P
I'm anxious to see what happens next!

If you have been a fan/around my blog for awhile, you most likely know that SOLID, the first book in this series, was the first book I received for review (if you’ve been around for that long, props to you). I was excited when Shelley asked me to review SETTLING, because that means I didn’t totally butcher the SOLID review!
First of all, this book takes place right after SOLID ended. It goes right back into the character’s life as if SOLID never ended, which I liked very much because that means there is no “catching up” that is needed to be done, which I really liked.
I loved the investigation part of the novel. I’m very much into crime scene investigation so I was so into that part of the novel.
Looking back onto the book now, I can see a few similarities between Clio and I. We’re both not afraid to speak our minds sometimes, very much insecure of ourselves, and don’t think we deserve a lot of the things we have. Clio is a very interesting character to read about because I can see similarities between the two of us, in most Young Adult books I don’t see similarities between myself and the characters a lot of the time.
I loved the relationships that are formed between the characters. In the time duration of both books, the characters have really only known each other for a few month’s time, but their friendship is as though they have known each other all of their lives. They just seemed to have bonded so fast, and even though they all have very different personalities and you think they would clash to each other and they wouldn’t get along well, I think that’s what makes them such a great group of friends. I also enjoyed the relationships between Calliope and the people that work the army base, such as Ford. Especially Ford, actually, it’s such an odd relationship between the two and their banter was just so hilarious and adorable.
I still love the whole idea of the Army campus setting. I find the whole science experiment that was used on the characters in this novel really interesting, and I could really see something like that actually happening in the future. Maybe not necessarily the whole “superpower” thing that the kids get from the experiment, but something like it. It’s like a realistic fantasy type book, which I find really interesting.
I’m just going to say I was NOT expecting how the end of the novel turned out. I was so shocked when the end of the novel came about. Another thing was I did not know what to expect or know who the killer was through the whole book so it was a really big mystery to me, but when it was revealed I was very shocked.
I really enjoyed reading this book, and it was exactly the kind of book I was in the mood to read. It was the perfect read, not too heavy but not exactly a chick lit light read.

Even after what happened to them in the past few weeks, the kids who were the victims of Dr Heighl’s scientific experiment decide to stay back in the camp that the army had made for them. Now, Clio and her friends have taken up internship jobs within the campus. Just as the camp atmosphere starts going back to normal, a murderer is found to be loose among them. With the attacks continuing, everyone is afraid about being the next target of the murderer and the army still does not have any idea who can it be. To add to her problems, Clio finds new facets of herself that not only puts her friendships at risk but also makes her run headlong into decisions that she is going to regret.
Clio has at last found some close friends that she instinctively feels are the kind who will stick with her throughout her life. However, a new part of her starts to develop which she tries to ignore but which ultimately affects her relations with her friends. She seems to be pushing away her friends, even Jack and prefers to spend some alone time. In this book, I had some conflicting feelings for her. Sometimes I felt angry with her but for the most part I sympathized with her. She so desperately wants the camp to work out for everyone that she starts to lose control over things. I almost felt her desperation as she tries to correct things that seem to be going bad to worse for her. The character closest to my heart is still Jack. Although he did not make many appearances in this book, he made it impossible for me to forget him. After all he is the perfect boyfriend anyone could wish to have. That is the thing about Jack - he is absolutely perfect, seemingly without any flaw and still he will not make you feel that he is unrealistic or not relatable.
In Settling, the author focuses on the murderer. The suspense holds good till the very end. The author kept me guessing who the murderer really is, guaranteeing me a few nail biting moments. Still, I would have loved to know a little more about the experiment of Dr. Heighl that had brought them here. So this book tends to be more like a murder/mystery novel instead of a science-fiction one. However, it did not make me like the book any less than the first one. It was nice to see that the characters are more developed than the previous part. As we get more insight into their characters, we are able to connect better with them. I was almost afraid that I was not going to like this part as much because around the middle of the book I thought the book diverted a little from its original plot. Thankfully, the book came back to the right path after a few disappointing pages.
I went through a series of emotions while reading Settling - excited at the start, a little disappointed around the middle and awestruck at the end. Overall, Settling is an exciting and thrilling book that will keep you at the edge of the seat; just as you think you know who the murderer is, the author will shock you with the truth.

I was very excited to receive Settling from Shelley Workinger a week or so ago. If you haven't read Solid (the first novel in the trilog) you should. I'll link the review here. Anyways, I started reading the novel over last weekend, and this is the very first novel that I read on my new nook. I don't want this to be about ereading so here goes the review.
Shelley Workinger is one the authors that I love, and her debut series has satisfied me quite well. For her second novel, I was spoiled with spoilers before, and I was shocked at first. Then when I read the novel, the spoilers of what Clio does, does not surprise me, and I don't hate Shelley for writing the way Clio is. I wouldn't say that I'm thrilled by the prospect, but I'm not going around hating it. Shelley's writing is wonderful like last time, and I enjoyed the new characters she brought on and the mystery she still brings to a novel that is supposed to be about settling down in your new home.
I have no shame in saying that Clio is the character I love the most in the novel. I don't have any sympathy for some of the side characters. Maybe I'm just brutal and cold, which I doubt because I literally hurt for my favorite characters, but I had no sympathy for what happened to Jack. I think part of it was that you're reminded of what happened in the first novel, but then Jack doesn't do much in the second novel in my opinion. I'm a little sad at the note of how the novel ended, but things are hopefully be brighter, maybe not soon, but hopefully by the end of the last installment.
The main love interest, Jack and Clio are a pair that I never really got. They are the outsiders of all the kids, but some part of me is saying that their relationship never did or will survive. I can't see the connection, and I'm not sure if there's something behind it, or is it just a weird pairing.
The whole tone of the novel was a steady stream of events that you kind of see coming, but me personally, I don't wonder too much about stories when I'm in the middle of reading them, because they usually let me down. I found a same pattern as in Solid, and I knew the pattern of events before they happened. Especially the ending. I never liked or will like anti-climatic endings.
I still have a lot of hope for this series, and I will read the last novel when in comes out soon. I'm lost in how to end these reviews and there isn't much to say. For some reason, I wouldn't recommend this series to a friend because I know no one that'll like this kind of book, and the fact that it's part of me, and I don't want to share it. That's awfully selfish of me, but it's true. Anyways, I give Settling by Shelley Workinger a head nods, thumbs up. (4 out of 5)

Shelley Workinger is one the authors that I love, and her debut series has satisfied me quite well. For her second novel, I was spoiled with spoilers before, and I was shocked at first. Then when I read the novel, the spoilers of what Clio does, does not surprise me, and I don't hate Shelley for writing the way Clio is. I wouldn't say that I'm thrilled by the prospect, but I'm not going around hating it. Shelley's writing is wonderful like last time, and I enjoyed the new characters she brought on and the mystery she still brings to a novel that is supposed to be about settling down in your new home.
I have no shame in saying that Clio is the character I love the most in the novel. I don't have any sympathy for some of the side characters. Maybe I'm just brutal and cold, which I doubt because I literally hurt for my favorite characters, but I had no sympathy for what happened to Jack. I think part of it was that you're reminded of what happened in the first novel, but then Jack doesn't do much in the second novel in my opinion. I'm a little sad at the note of how the novel ended, but things are hopefully be brighter, maybe not soon, but hopefully by the end of the last installment.
The main love interest, Jack and Clio are a pair that I never really got. They are the outsiders of all the kids, but some part of me is saying that their relationship never did or will survive. I can't see the connection, and I'm not sure if there's something behind it, or is it just a weird pairing.
The whole tone of the novel was a steady stream of events that you kind of see coming, but me personally, I don't wonder too much about stories when I'm in the middle of reading them, because they usually let me down. I found a same pattern as in Solid, and I knew the pattern of events before they happened. Especially the ending. I never liked or will like anti-climatic endings.
I still have a lot of hope for this series, and I will read the last novel when in comes out soon. I'm lost in how to end these reviews and there isn't much to say. Clio, Calliope Kaid, seems to have everything working for her. She's found her niche, even if it's at an Army installation because some whacked out Army doc on a power high corrupted her genome, like everyone else at the camp. She has the most awesome guy in camp as her boyfriend. Not that she and all of her friends at the camp haven't had the lives screwed up, having to deal with the aftermath of the CX9 experiment Dr. Heigl put their pregnant mothers through. Now, they've all discovered these special abilities... the stars, the jocks, the heavies, and the stealths, each with their own unique ability. And, they've decided to keep the camp open, let the kids attend school there. A place where they fit in.
But, something else is happening to Clio, something she can't explain. She's angry when she doesn't need to be. She finds herself attracted to Ford, Lt. Graham when she really shouldn't be, especially with the awesomely hot Jack waiting for her. What the heck is going on with her?
Then, Dr. Larson (who doesn't really have any fans at the camp) is murdered, placing everyone under suspicion. Do they have another killer hidden within their ranks?
Settling by Shelley Workinger is an excellent follow up to Solid. The characters are well developed, and I found myself liking them as much in this book as I had in the last. (Except I wanted to kick Clio in the patootie.) For me, the story seemed a little slower paced than the first book, but I think that's because I already knew all the characters, and the plot unfolded in a way that I didn't think it would go. All in all, I very much enjoyed Settling. It tells the next part of Clio's life and summer at the New Jersey Army Installation. There's so much we don't know about that's going on in those massive buildings, and I wanted to grab one of the kids, and demand to explore. And why do they need blood draws, if the Army is only trying to figure out how Doctor Demento's work (Heigl) then one draw should be enough, right? Is the Army hiding something up their sleeves? All questions I'll be looking to Book #3 for answers.
Settling is a YA paranormal romance/fantasy about what can go wrong during an unauthorized experimentation. If you a fan to preternatural storylines, give this Indie author a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed, I know I wasn't. I think Settling could be read as a stand alone, but I think you'd get a much better feel for the characters, their backgrounds, and connections (as well as the abilities) if you read Solid, Book 1 and follow it with Settling, Book 2. I recommend this book to YA lovers, PRN and UF lovers, and fantasy lovers, something for everyone. For now, I'll be patiently waiting to read Book 3, I'm left wondering where this story will go next.

I was very excited to be back in the world of Solid and continue the journey with the characters that Workinger created. Her writing style makes for a fast, enjoyable read and one that is hard to put down.
Settling begins a couple of weeks after Solid ended. The teens who had been involved in genetic experiments had, despite earlier problems, decided to stay at the camp for the summer and even to attend school there in the fall. Instead of simply wasting their summer, Clio and her friends decide to create internships relating to their interests and abilities, which leads them to meet new people and discover new secrets. But once again, all is not well at the camp. As Clio and her friends try to unravel the mystery and the stakes increase, tensions run high, relationships are threatened, and more self-awareness becomes imperative. Will these friends be able to stop whatever is causing these problems, stay friends, and save their new home once again?
Once again, the characters really made this novel. It's always refreshing to read about a group of friends rather than a main character who only has one or two friends. The snark, wit, and group dimensions from the first book were back in this one, and it kept the novel moving right along. In addition, some new characters are introduced. Among these people are Lieutenant Graham, or Ford, to whom Clio starts growing closer; and Xavier and Rae, who seem to break the established molds even for this group of people. There were other dimensions to this story as well, however, especially with Clio. Despite her progress in the first book, Clio still had a lot to learn about herself. At some point the story lost the group aspect and became focused on Clio. However, the book never lost its momentum, and with the added element of the mystery, it kept me turning pages until the very end.
I have to admit that I was frustrated with Clio sometimes; even though I could understand why she did what she did (and part of me wants to see the outcomes of those cans of worms), she was still much more selfish than in the first book. Also, a few events could have used a bit more preparation - while they weren't completely unprepared, I was still a little taken aback when they happened. That being said, the surprises certainly kept things interesting as well as offering possibilities to explore in the next novel.
Unlike most sophomore novels that seem to not be as strong as the first, Settling actually surpasses Solid. Though the mystery is solved and a temporary conclusion reached, there are still some unanswered questions. I will be looking forward to the next novel, Sound, to see what else is in store for Clio and her friends!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series. If you missed my review of Solid you can check it out by clicking here. It was a no brainer to read the second book in the series, Settling by Shelley Workinger. This series is based on a bunch of kids who have special abilities. They didn't receive these abilities by some freak accident or some twist of nature, they received these abilities by a secret genetic experiment in utero. So secret that their parents aren't even aware of it. The kids are gathered in a campus like setting to live while the government tries to find out the answers to how this happened.
After everything that went down in Solid, the kids are still going strong. Clio, Jack, Alexis, Miranda, Garrett and Bliss are stronger than ever. As different as they all are they bonded over the near death experience. They've decided to stay on campus during the summer months. They all get jobs based on their 'talents'. Things seem to be going pretty good for the group then someone on campus get murdered. This throws the campus on high alert especially since they're no witnesses to the murder. Everyone is suspect including the students.
This is a great second book to the series. I really enjoyed getting to 'know' the characters more. The story is told from Clio's point of view. She's still trying to figure out who she is. She craves isolation so she starts pushing everyone away. Clio realizes that things are changing with her and she makes all kinds of mistakes. Clio is a great character. I didn't get frustrated with her the way I do with other characters sometimes. Even though she made mistakes I thought they were plausible. Her character really starts to develop in this novel. Shelley Workinger also introduces some new characters in the series, Xavier, Trudy, and Rae. They are all great additions to the story line. I look forward to seeing what the author has in store for them.

Solid was one of the first review copies I received as a blogger and I'm very happy to say I was correct in saying that the series would improve with each book. How I loved seeing these characters again! While I enjoyed the storyline of Solid, I felt that we didn't connect enough with the characters. Settling remedies that, allowing readers to become more involved with their personal stories and see inside of their minds. Exciting as ever, the mystery of genetically-altered teens continues!
This year, the students at a secret Army camp are beginning to go into working fields relating to their ability. Clio discovers that turning invisible may not be her only power, just as she realises her boyfriend, Jack, may not be ability-less after all. This occurs when a killer on campus makes themselves known and, as more people are killed by this unseen attacker, Clio must piece everything together before her own time is up. Means? Motive? Opportunity? Oh how you'll love the mystery. Prepare for some fast-paced, exciting action! You won't guess the outcome. *wink*
It was so easy to slip back into the comfortable circle of friends. With Garrett's charming personality and Miranda's controlling streak, you'll feel right at home with these six loveable characters. Jack and Clio continue to be cutely in love but outside forces now threaten to tear them apart. Jack spends most of his time reviewing security footage relating to the murders, while Clio begins working with Lieutenant Rutherford, a twenty-one year old she can't help but feel a connection to. Add witty bantering to sizzling tension and we have ourselves a love triangle! While I love Jack…there's just something about Ford that makes me swoon. Call me a traitor, but the heart wants what the heart wants! Join Clio as she journeys through the confusing woes of romance, forced to firstly discover herself in the process.
My reading of this was long overdue. I never had the time to pick this up when it was first released but better late than never! I'm looking forward to the next installment of the series, ready to delve into the complicated relationships and mysterious abilities all over again. A fantastic sequel by Workinger!

I really enjoyed Solid, so I was looking forward to another great read by Workinger. I knew Settling would be just as good as Solid, if not better, so I waited a while to read it, using it as motivation to get some things done around my house that I'd been putting off. When I finally awarded myself the privilege of reading Settling, all of my expectations were met---and more.
Settling picks up right where Solid left off. Clio has made some close friends at the Army school and is in a relationship with the near-perfect Jack. All of the students are growing in their powers---except for Jack, who remains ability-free. Each student in Clio's group of friends has a job to do for the school, whether it be security, welcoming new students, or setting up a curriculum, which is Clio's job. Colonel Clark is out of commission, recovering from injuries sustained at the end of Solid, and in his place is Lieutenant Graham, a young officer who reports to Clark. Clio and Lieutenant Graham work together daily to set up the school's curriculum, and Clio finds herself warming to her job and making a new friend in the process.
However, things start to go wrong when someone is murdered on the campus. Clio and her friends are not satisfied with the way the school authorities are handling the investigation, and decide to do some investigating of their own. Relationships are tested, suspense mounts, and everyone is a suspect as the team attempts to find the person responsible.
Settling's plot moves at a quick clip for the entire book. Workinger's dysptopian world was built to perfection in Solid, leaving Settling's plot to take off from the first page. The characterization was so precise and complex. I loved that! But, my favorite thing about Settling, besides the mystery behind the murders, was the chemistry between the couples. There are some really sweet love stories woven into the plot, along with a surprise attraction that takes you totally by surprise.
I would recommend Solid and Settling to fans of dystopia and paranormal YA. The characters are complex enough to make it a good choice for contemporary YA fans as well. I'm really looking forward to book three in the series!

After finishing Solid - the first book in the series - I couldn't wait to get my hands on Settling, the second book. I loved getting thrust back into this wonderful world, although the first book was almost a typical paranormal read, this one was definitely not.

Clio and her friends suffered a lot on their first month in the base. They are finally ready to settle into their lives and routines. But nothing stays the same, and without noticing, Clio is getting more and more distant from her friends. Is she turning into something that she is not?
It has something to do with her genetically engineered chromosome that they all share. And while Jack is getting busier by the minute, Clio can't deny the attraction, the forbidden attraction, she feels toward Ford, the lieutenant in charge. But that's not all on Clio's mind, someone has killed one of the doctors on the base, and it looks like the murderer is just getting started.
Will this army base ever be free of murderers and crazed lunatics? Will Clio ever be able to go back into her former self? Will she push Jack away and welcome Ford in? Find out much more when you read this action-packed, satisfying sequel, Settling...
I LOVE this series, it has become one of my favorite ones. Solid was a very interesting read, but I didn't like it a lot. It was probably due to the fact that it was typical paranormal stuff. I was a bit worried about what the author would bring to the field in this sequel. Let me tell you, Shelley Workinger, you have written one of the BEST sequels EVER!
I love the action in this novel, and I love the fact that it is not the main subject. I loved how Clio's character grew in this sequel, for better or for worse. I LOVE Jack, I adore his sweetness and his honesty. I loved Ford's character, too. Shelley Workinger has created a very unique bunch of characters, that you will love, feel for, and relate to. In every possible way.

I LOVE this series, it has become one of my favorite ones. Solid was a very interesting read, but I didn't like it a lot. It was probably due to the fact that it was typical paranormal stuff. I was a bit worried about what the author would bring to the field in this sequel. Let me tell you, Shelley Workinger, you have written one of the BEST sequels EVER!
I love the action in this novel, and I love the fact that it is not the main subject. I loved how Clio's character grew in this sequel, for better or for worse. I LOVE Jack, I adore his sweetness and his honesty. I loved Ford's character, too. Shelley Workinger has created a very unique bunch of characters, that you will love, feel for, and relate to. In every possible way.

First, I have to thank Shelley Workinger for sending this signed copy to me. I "hinted" repeatedly that I was desperate for the second installment to her series and even begged for a signed copy. She came through splendidly, personalized it to me and even sent some swag in the form of "Settling" bookmarks! Thanks again, Shelley!
In this second book, Settling, that's just what we find the characters we left off with trying to do...settle into their roles. Clio, Jack and her diverse group of talented friends are still at the military camp designed to help them discover and master their genetically-induced super skills. Although the initial program is now over, the students have all decided to remain on at the camp in summer internships with the hopes of building the camp into an actual school, where they can stay on to finish high school. Things appear to be moving along smoothly until a series of attacks begin to happen around the campus, suggesting that someone wants the program to end. It's up to Clio and her friends to find out who is attacking them and to avoid being attacked themselves.
I really enjoyed the story line in this one, and I especially liked the new characters who were introduced. I also enjoyed that the original characters gained more solid identities for the reader to understand, with the unfortunate exception of one. I need more of Jack's character. He was often in the background in this book, with good reason for the story line, but I still don't understand his personality. And I need more to understand and empathize with him at times. Further, something big happens in this book (I don't do spoilers, but you already know to expect it if you read the early released excerpt), and while I can understand and feel okay with it happening - I found the build up lacking. It felt far too abrupt.
Finally, I need to address the ending. I'd normally stomp my feet and pout over the ending because I generally hate cliffhangers. But I don't hate this one, and I think it's done very well! It's dark and upsetting but will have you eagerly anticipating Summer 2012 - when the next book will be released.

I've always been fascinated in books that have the characters having special abilities , I've always thought if I could have an ability it would be teleportation or telepath. Be like Professor X on Xmen or Sookie Stackhouse on True Blood. Settling takes off where Solid ended , so readers if you haven't yet read Solid , then stop reading the review of Settling and hop to Solid. Solid introduced us to a group of teenagers that were somehow altered before birth with a mutated ninth-chromosome , this caused the children to have special abilities like super-strength, invisibility etc. In Settling , we discover that Clio and her friends have realised and come to the terms that unfortunately they aren't going anywhere , so they figure it's time to put their abilities to use on the campus and each participate in a journey of self-discovery and enhancing/ controlling their abilities in the real world. However, adding the suspense field to the novel - someone isn't very co-operative and wants Clio and her friends to be rid off - even it means terminating them for good . Can Clio and her friends harness their powers and learn enough to survive or will the statement "You'll never leave " ring true and become extended to "Your'e never leave here alive". We read as new characters are introduced and when one of them starts to show feelings for Clio , we read as she finds herself in the situation of a love triangle and her feelings are all over the place - can Clio keep a level-head in order to survive ? Read as friendships will become strained , some tightened and others loosened , secrets will be revealed and abilities will continue to grow. Can the teens stop the Killer before he gets to them ? You read right , it's a male - but you will be surprised as when you discover who the assassin is , Shelley will keep you guessing. Another great installment to the Solid Series.

Settling picks up right where the first book, Solid, left off. Settling is really about getting answers. There are still so many more secrets left uncovered, but this book had a bit of a different tone than Solid did. I really enjoyed it and I read it pretty fast.
Clio is an interesting girl. On one hand, I totally understand and relate to her need to figure out answers. I have that same inquisitive nature and in her case it is even more important because the secrets involve her and her friends. But on the other hand, she certainly does a good job of pushing people away. And I know why she did it but still it scares me that she will be left all alone and no one will give her a chance to explain. There is a scene in the book where she is trying to rule out suspects and it just seemed like a scene from the movie Harriet the Spy, where the list falls into the wrong hands and everyone gets mad at her.
Plus there is the whole thing with Ford and Jack. I think there are some secrets going on with Ford, but I am not sure what they are yet. And Jack is just so awesome. I really hope he gives her a chance in the next book. I hope all of her friends do. Slowly seeing the relationships fall apart made me so sad.
Settling is a great middle book in the series. You get some questions answers, a few more twists and turns thrown in and some pretty big road blocks, but I am liking the progression. I didn't exactly love the way it ended but, I am hoping things turn around in the next book or I am going to be one sad puppy. Settling was more of an emotional journey for Clio than Solid was, and for me as well. I really liked where the book took us but I was pretty darn nervous for Clio for most of the story. I need to read the next book before I can get any sort of peace of mind. That being said, I am really excited to read the next book because this whole conspiracy thing has me so intrigued! I want to get to the bottom of this just as much as Clio. I just hope she accepts herself more in the next book and that her friends do as well.

Settling picks up where Solid left off—Clio and her friends have chosen to remain on campus and explore their abilities further, while taking on new responsibilities around the “school.” Just when they thought they’d gotten rid of the “crazy,” a new foe surfaces. No one knows the villain's motives… and no one knows who the next victim will be.
While I really did enjoy this second installment of the series, I did wish there was just a little something more. It’s hard to explain exactly what I was looking for. Maybe I wish the whole “attacker” thing wasn’t revisited this time. Maybe I wish some of the subplots (like Clio’s love life) were fleshed out a bit more. I guess it could come down to the end, where one mystery is resolved, but there are still a few loose ends, which is understandable because this isn’t the END of the series. As with any kind of cliffhanger, it is slightly frustrating but makes me anticipate the next novel even more!
So maybe the whole plotline could have been a bit richer, but as far as the technical side goes, Shelley is still a fantastic author. I love the easy style of her writing and how each character has their own unique presence in the story, just as they each have their own unique “superpowers.” I became invested in the lives of each character in Solid, and I’ve only added more investment in book two.
Most notably, Clio is changing in book two. She’s accepting the things she faced in Solid, but now she is having to reexamine quite a bit. Even her genes appear to be changing (or at least new traits are emerging), so this probably accounts for some of the differences between the Clio in book one compared to the more troubled girl we find in Settling. We understand other characters better, and we even get to add a couple new faces to the gang, which added a lot to the mystery aspect of the story—why did they show up late and could they be involved in the mayhem on campus?

I really enjoyed the first in this series, so was more than happy to participate in a blog tour arranged by the author.
I was a little surprised by Clio during the course of this book. It was almost like she became the queen bee in the first one and then left alone during this one, or so she thinks. In the effort to make the "camp" become a functioning permanent place for them to live, they've all been given "jobs" in their area of expertise. Jack works in security, Miranda works on the social calendar, etc. Clio is basically working on the academic accepts, which means she spends a lot of time alone. I'm not sure if it was her own doing or just the way it's played out, but Clio begins to feel left out. And she starts to have secrets. Her friends start to turn from her which of course causes a lot of drama and hurt feelings. I thought in the end the Clio's friends were really hard on her, but I think it's because they expect more from her.
I liked the course of action during the story. Of course the camp isn't safe yet. There's a lot of mixed feeling as to what should be done with these "super" genetically altered kids. And not everybody has pleasant thoughts of that. There's someone on campus who seems to want to put an end to what they are trying to set up. When the truth is exposed, someone gets hurt and a lot of blame falls on Clio. I'm not sure she deserved it, and I'll be curious to how it all plays out in the next book.
One of my favorite parts was the new theory on how blood type might effect how the special powers are played out. Especially when it comes to Jack and Clio because they seem to be unique cases. I wasn't surprised at what Clio might actually be capable of, but it never dawned on me about Jack.
Overall I really enjoyed Settling, just not quite as much as Solid. I am really looking forward to the next in the series!

This series really takes off with this second installment, taking on new nuances and subplots, and introducing new characters. All the original characters are back, and at the beginning of the book, you can see the easy banter and general great relationship that they've forged with one another through their shared experiences.
It doesn't take long for the plot to really jump-start and for things to begin changing. Two new kids arrive, one of which has a special draw that pulls people to him. I found this very interesting, and was hoping maybe it would be the start of a new love triangle, but... I needn't have worried about that. There is the beginnings of a love triangle but it's with Clio's special officer she's assigned to, who happens to be youngish, gorgeous, and very interesting. Is it wrong of me to immediately like him a little bit more than Jack? Don't get me wrong, Jack's great... but I think Ford challenges her more and is probably a little more right for her. Plus, their scenes together are hot!
I felt like this second installment had an even better story, more mystery, and more depth to it with the characters and their relationships. The pacing was great in this book, and whereas the first book felt a little rushed to me, this one was spot on. It moved along at the perfect time.
The only small complaint I might have is toward Clio's friends. When she makes her "big mistake", I felt that their reactions were a little over the top. I mean, no one even gave her an opportunity to explain even. Friends make mistakes, but even her girlfriend's cold-shouldered her. And yes, it was a big mistake, but I figured that a girlfriend's loyalty would lie with her girlfriend, even if she had made a pretty big mistake.
Other than that, I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next book in the series. Shelley Workinger did a really good job investing us in the characters and getting us hooked into the story and wanting more.

It's been a while since I read Solid, but I definitely picked up right where I left of. I fell in love with the characters and setting of Solid and I loved being able to reconnect with them in Settling. I devoured the first bit of the book. I read it in no time and couldn't get enough. I felt like Clio was so down-to-earth and relate-able that I dove into the book easily and loved living in her life. After a little while into it though, I felt like Clio sort of let me down. And I understand that they were all under a lot of stress and, at some points, they were scared for their lives, but I ended up with negative feelings towards Clio, which left me kind of dissatisfied.
I love Jack. I mean, of course I love him because he's practically perfect. But seriously, I couldn't get enough of him. I did miss him a little because he didn't seem to be in Settling as much as he was in Solid, but "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." Right? He may be the only one that I LOVE just as much at the end of Solid, as I did at the beginning...
Which brings me to Clio's other friends, Alexis, Miranda, Garrett and Bliss. They were all just as lovable as ever. All of them being so close really adds something great to these books, and their relationship is probably my favorite aspect of Settling.

I read the first book in the series; Solid, and really enjoyed it so I was excited to start Settling! I was glad I got to read more about Clio and her new friends (and enemies?) on the military installation they are being housed on. They decide to stay at the camp even after all that has happened and I have to admit I think that makes sense. These kids still want to learn more about what is happening to them, I would too! Bodies start showing up soon though and it seems clear that someone does not want them there. I like the mystery aspect of this one so much because I did not guess what was going on at all. I was surprised all the way to the end.
I will admit to being a bit frustrated with the actions of some of the characters this time, even Clio. I have to remember though that teenagers (and adults) make mistakes. I also felt like we missed Jack this time, he was there but just not as much. It was fun to read about her other friends too but I wish I got to know more about what their jobs were and how it related to their powers and personalities. I was disappointed in them sometimes too, I felt like they had uncharacteristic reactions to some things. By the end though, I was pleased with how everything turned out.

Amé Solid, así que cuando se presentó la oportunidad de leer Settling no lo dudé ni un instante. Clio y sus compañeros siguen en el campo de entrenamiento del ejército, intentando descubrir sus nuevos poderes o el alcance de los que ya tienen. Si bien el inicio es un poco lento, conforme se avanza en la historia el ritmo acelera, el misterio se intensifica y todo lo que importa es saber quién esta detrás de los asesinatos.
Me gustó mucho que ahora podamos acercarnos mejor a los personajes, tener una idea más concreta de lo que quieren, piensan o sientan. No puedo decir lo mismo de Clio, es lógico que esté confundida. Yo odio los triangulos amorosos pero creí por un instante que me sería difícil elegir, no lo fue. Team Jack forever!
Esta segunda parte de la serie ha sido mucho mejor que la primera y sin duda sólo mejorará con Sound (se publica en el verano de este año). Una muy buena historia, buen ritmo, conmovedora y difícil de dejar.

While the beginning is a little slow, as it moves in story the pace accelerates, the mystery deepens and all that matters is who is behind the killings.
I liked that we can now better approach to the characters, have a better idea of what they want, think or feel. I can not say the same of Clio, I know she is confused. I hate love triangles, but I thought for a moment that it would be hard to choose, but it was not. Team Jack forever!
This second part of the series was much better than the first and certainly will improve with "Sound" (published in the summer of this year). A very good story, good pace, heartbreaking and hard to put down!

Settling continues only a couple of weeks after the end of the first book Sound, where the Kids with the Cx9 gene are adapting to life after the controversy at the end of the first book. They decide to stay on at the compound as they finally feel like they belong with their peers as they all have the same gene. They’ve decided to pursue careers and they begin internships that appear to be linked to their powers. However, once they think things are back to normal, there is a death on campus that sends Clio into a tail spin.
Clio started off just fine in this book, but things soon changed aged after the death on campus. She became a bit withdrawn and more focused on herself. I didn’t really like that at first but the longer that I read the book I understood why she was doing so. She finds it hard to talk to people as she is a bit moodier than usual and at times I wish she would just talk to someone instead of just curling into a ball. She puts distance between herself and her friends and even her boyfriend, but he doesn’t seem to be around a lot either.
We meet a couple of new teens that have decided to come to campus now that the world knows about the CX9 gene. I liked both of these new characters and they slot into Clio’s group perfectly. We don’t see a lot of them but they seem like good kids.
Shelley has done an incredible job with the new direction of Clio’s story but things aren’t always great for her and it’s an emotional rollercoaster for Clio. There was something that Clio did that had me going “No, no. no!!” but she tries her best to deal with it. I liked the new twists and turns but I felt a bit sad for Clio as she seems to be all alone. I look forward to Sound the final book in the series to see which direction Clio and her peers go next…

I don't think I was as captured with "Settling" as I was with "Solid". Now don't get me wrong, I did fly through the book and I really enjoyed reading it. It was well written and I enjoyed the story but I found the plot to be lagging on the major story line. The character's were well written and developed like they were in "Solid" but I found that Clio was a little less interesting in this book then she was in the first.
I found that she was a little more self-centered and complicated which I believe is what Shelley was going for and it does give you more of an inside look into Clio's character but I didn't really like the direction in which it took her. I also found that the major plot turner's happened a little late in the story.
I loved all of her character's. I think they were well developed and I loved the new character's that Shelley introduced. I loved the relationships that they all have formed and I loved where those relationships are headed. I think that "Settling" was a great opener for book 3 "Sound" I just feel like Shelley could have spent a little less time on Clio's situation and a little more time on the event's that are effecting the kids as a whole. But it does make you want to continue on with the story and I feel like Shelley kept me hooked to read "Sound"
