A PROMINENT CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE REJECTS "BIG GOVERNMENT REPUBLICANS"
Richard Art Viguerie (1933) is a prominent conservative figure, particularly known as a pioneer of political direct mail; he is the current chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, and has also written books such as 'America's Right Turn: How Conservatives Used New and Alternative Media to Take Over America,' 'The New Right: We're Ready to Lead,' and 'The Establishment Vs. The People: Is a New Populist Revolt on the Way?'.
He wrote in the Introduction of this 2006 book, "My main goal in this book is to explain what conservatism stands for in the 21st century... Let me be clear: The present leaders of the Republican Party are not conservative. Rather... these Big Government Republicans have hijacked the term 'conservative' and they had hijacked the conservative movement itself... this book can serve as a primer for conservatives who want to more than gripe, and who are willing to help lead grassroots conservatives to victory."
He begins by asking, "if we desert the GOP, or just stay at home on Election Day, the Republicans will lose again... How many times does the GOP have to be hit on the head before it learns not to take conservatives for granted?" (Pg. v-vi) He says caustically, "President Bush and Karl Rove wanted a Medicare drug prescription bill for one simple reason: to bribe the nation's senior citizens." (Pg. 13) He notes that illegal immigration benefits Agribusiness, then comments, "It also helps explain why virtually nothing has been done by the Bush Administration to stop this flood of illegals." (Pg. 58)
He strongly maintains that "It is impossible to be at once a sincere conservative and in favor of abortion-on-demand." (Pg. 83) But interestingly, he also argues that conservatives should give up their support of the death penalty, as "support for it undermines our arguments against abortion, euthanasia, and related practices." (Pg. 96-97)
He concludes, "We will withhold our support from any of the candidates for president in 2008---until someone truly earns our support. And again, the best way to determine who earns our support is whether they will publicly oppose the big government policies of the Bush GOP." (Pg. 216)
This passionately-argued book will be of considerable interest to Christian conservatives, and for Republicans defining the nature of their party.
I left it unfinished; it's not that I much disagree with it, it's just that he isn't saying anything I don't already know, and he doesn't write in a particularly engaging manner.
