“We become who we are because of our abilities. It’s what makes us special.” “Yeah, well what if your ability was the ability to murder in the most conniving way imaginable? What does that make you then?”
Ivy Brooks is dead. They say she was murdered in a way never seen before. Though she appeared fine on the outside, her heart had been crushed. Destroyed. Completely obliterated. It was her daughter who killed her. And now she’s having to live with the repercussions. In a world run by the Civilisation project - where everyone has been sent back to their country of origin for an ‘upgrade’ - Beck Brooks struggles to make sense of what her grief-infested life has become. Just when she thinks her life is finally starting to sort itself out, things take another unexpected turn for the worst. After befriending a fellow criminal, Beck uncovers the secrets of her past as well as the project and learns what it truly means to be the Heart Crusher.
I think it’s going to be the last read of this year and I’m so glad about finishing my Goodreads challenge on a phenomenal book.
“I’ll never understand how people can be so horrible, but I swear to myself now that I’ll never be like them.”
This book has a wonderful plot, multi layered characters, epic class politics with suspense, thriller, adventure, action and yes a lot of betrayal as well.
First about the plot, it’s super interesting. The story follows a girl named Beck Brooks who is known as the heart crusher. She has a special ability called Telekinesis by which she can control things around her and can also crush the heart of others. She happened to kill her mother due to a misunderstanding. But after a few years she found herself chased by the president due to her special ability. This investigation by the higher ups nearly cost her own and her friend’s lives. But according to the president her powers can save the world but that is only achievable by killing her.
The story gives off shatter me series vibes. Maybe that’s why I enjoyed it a lot. Every page I turned there was almost a new mystery. The writer gave snippets of information in the start and very slowly and cleverly each secret got unfolded in a spectacular way.
“I’ve gotta make Jordan hate me.
It’s the only way I can keep him alive.”
The characters were amazingly fantastically (。•̀ᴗ-) superb. Every character was full of a lot of secrets. Literally, it was very difficult to trust whose loyalty lies on whose side. This chaotic situation kept me immersed all the time in the novel and I didn’t want to put it down.
The action scenes were meticulously portrayed. They didn’t seem even a bit exaggerated but somehow natural like straight out of the action movie. I really enjoyed them a lot. The scenes where Beck used her ability to move Jordan and Gash were really special >▽<.
As I have already mentioned above, the plot was enjoyable that’s why the pacing of the novel was great. There wasn’t any boring or dragged out part.
The writer of this novel is only 19 years old. I’m amazed to see such an epic fantasy written by her at such an age. Hoping to see the next novels in the series as superb as the first one. ✿◠ᴗ◠
*Special thanks to Safiyyah Umar for this gifted book. I had the absolute pleasure of reading it.
An engaging read! It's from the persepctive of Beck, a teenager who grew up in a dystopian future society where the world is separated into distinct sectors, eerily dubbed the Civilisation Project. Beck has been bestowed with a disturbing power which leaves her with immense trauma and makes her a target of those in power. As the book goes on, she discovers more about the origin of her powers, and the motivations of those who have found themselves entangled in her life.
'As humans we are stupid and wistful, thinking if we could hope hard enough, if we could try hard enough with all of these useless bandages and sodden t-shirts, than maybe we could preserve what was meant to be taken from us. We can't.'
What an amazing book. A wondeful book full of so many plot twists I never saw coming! I am amazed at the fact that this author wrote such a wondeful book at such a young age. For anyone looking for a fast paced book that is going to make you want to stay up to find out more than this book is perfect for you! I fell in love with the characters in this book especially Ciara (which also happens to be my name!) and the world building was incredible. Super happy that I picked this book up and what a great book to end the month with!
This book's concept is very unique and interesting. The civilization project and racism are interrelated. This makes it even more refreshing as the dystopian era is coming back. If you think you're having a bad day, Beck Brooks is having worse. She killed her mother, had to live with the guilt, got adopted, had to see her guardian and his son get publicly executed because of her, found a little kid (younger sibling archetype character), saw him get killed by the people she trusted, got kidnapped, tortured, and had to see her friends get tortured. Just to find out that everyone who was killed before her eyes might still be alive! THE CLIFFHANGER AT THE END!!?? GIVE ME THE NEXT BOOK NOW!!
This book is in my top 5 of the year!! If you haven't read The Heart Crusher, what are you waiting for?! So intense, intriguing and exceptionally amazing!
