McB is a compassionate carnival owner who understands and cares for his “special” people. When he stumbles upon an attraction known as Twitch—an innocent, stubbed limbed, white eye deformity that has been used, abused and unwanted his whole life—at a competitor, he feels an instant attraction and a compelling urge to acquire. He purchases him and includes him in his “oddities” attraction where, unknown to McB, Twitch absorbs abuse from various gawkers. However, Twitch may seem helpless, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
This dark and tightly written tale offers horror and suspense that will leave you aghast, frightened, angry, and sad. It is a tale of deserving retribution and a warning for those who view and treat the unknown with ridicule and pain.
With the seeds firmly planted, Pittsburgh's Chiller Theatre offered Thomas Scopel the weekly scares he desired. After obtaining a degree and working in the engineering field, constantly feeling the writing itch, he pursued it, becoming a correspondent at the Daytona Beach News Journal. This scratched the itch, but left only raised, bloody, horror aspirating welts on his flesh and he converted to horror fiction.
Since entering the darkness, with no intentions of ever returning (or even turning a light on for that matter), He has been published in many horror and fright based electronic and print publications. His tales include The Pumpkin Patch (August's "Look What I Found" anthology from Norgus Press), Lickety Split, While You Sleep, All the Creatures Were Stirring...Even the Mouse, The Eight Legs of Night, The Argument, A Cup of Sugar, The Horrors of Easter, Don't Forget the Fingers: A Guide to the Perfect Zombie Family Picnic, Welcome, and more, with some having been in podcasts and radio broadcasts.
His upcoming ebook "Twitch" will be released July 15, 2011 from Suspense Publishing. He has an AAS in Design Engineering Technology and lives in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Scopel has written a very intriguing tale involving the carnival freak, Twitch, and the horrors that befall those who abuse him. This story is not what I was expecting, and I have to say that I am very impressed with the story and Scopel’s writing as well.
This novella begins much like any other, but the creep factor quickly comes into play as characters are introduced and the story slowly begins to unfold. Some of the horror within the novel is quite gruesome, with blood spurting everywhere, burning blisters popping open, etc., but it adds nicely to this horrific tale of retribution as Twitch pays back all those who have ever muttered a degrading word his way. I think my favorite part about it all is the fact that Scopel decided to add some history and witchcraft to the mix, creating an ingenious background story for Twitch and his existence.
Scopel is a very talented writer, keeping the reader focused and engaged throughout the entire story. And, the best part is, he’s strictly writes horror...
Twitch started out wonderfully. The owner of the carnival McB showed his caring nature in the way he treats his “family” and especially in his treatment of Twitch. The interaction between him and Twitch was so touching. The story continued introducing us to various carnival goers, their treatment of the ‘freaks’ and subsequently the end result of their inhuman treatment. I truly enjoyed and was very curious as to the origins of Twitch’s abilities. However, as the story progressed it plateaued for me and then all of a sudden I’m getting the backstory of Twitch, which I wanted to know, but it’s placement in the story just seemed off to me.
I definitely see great potential in Thomas Scopel, his writing abilities and it’s not at all that I did not enjoy Twitch. The characters were well thought out and described and the carnival setting was very detailed, so much so that I was craving an Elephant Ear at one point while reading. For me, I think it was the abruptness of the back story of Twitch that did not sit right with me. However, I am not at all saying don’t purchase, Twitch is well worth a read especially if you enjoy some gruesomely awesome carnival deaths!
Tightly written, this dark tale offers horror and suspense in a page turning quick read that will leave you aghast, frightened, angry and sad. It is a tale of deserving retribution of those who view and treat the odd and unknown with ridicule and pain. Twitch is an innocent deformed atrocity that has been used, abused and unwanted his whole life. But, he has a secret unknown to his abusers until it is far too late...for people can be so vicious…and so can Twitch.
I was different, it didn't have alot of layers, but it is a very short story. I liked the sinisterness of it, I think the characters in the end meet their dimise as deserved for what they do to the "spectacle, the attraction known as Twitch"
