He's everything she despises--a babe magnet with more notches on his belt than a millipede has legs.
And he thinks his coworker is wound so tightly she irons her underwear at night.
Two people couldn't be further apart.
But when Jack Brook and Claire Marsden get stuck in a sweltering elevator one afternoon, it's a different story. By the time they're rescued, Jack and Claire have swapped confidences and oh, they've had the most spectacular sex of their lives!
Back in the office they're still butting heads over projects, but now there's a heightened awareness added to the mix. With this kind of tension in the air, how can they resist another round of sexy indulgence?
Sarah Mayberry was born in Melbourne, Australia, and is the middle of three children. From the time that she first “stole” paper from kindergarten and stapled it together to make “books,” Sarah has always wanted to be a writer. In line with this ambition, on graduation from high school she completed a bachelor of arts degree majoring in professional writing, then sat down to write a book. When inspiration didn’t strike, she began to wonder if, perhaps, she needed to live some life first before writing about it.
This still left the burning question of how to pay the rent. She found her way into trade journalism, working off the principle that it was better to write anything for a living than nothing at all. Her time there lead to the opportunity to launch a new decorator magazine for one of Australia’s major retailers, an invaluable and grueling experience that she found very rewarding.
But the opportunity to write fiction for a living soon lured Sarah away. She took up a post as storyliner on Australia’s longest running soap, Neighbours. Over two years she helped plot more than 240 hours of television, as well as writing freelance scripts. She remembers her time with the show very fondly — especially the dirty jokes and laughter around the story table — and still writes scripts on a freelance basis.
In 2003 she relocated to New Zealand for her partner’s work. There Sarah served as storyliner and story editor on the country’s top-rating drama, Shortland Street, before quitting to pursue writing full time.
Sarah picked up a love of romance novels from both her grandmothers, and has submitted manuscripts to Harlequin many times over the years. She credits the invaluable story structuring experience she learned on Neighbours as the key to her eventual success — along with the patience of her fantastic editor, Wanda.
Sarah is revoltingly happy with her partner of twelve years, Chris, who is a talented scriptwriter. Not only does he offer fantastic advice and solutions to writing problems, but he’s also handsome, funny and sexy. When she’s not gushing over him, she loves to read romance and fantasy novels, go to the movies, sew and cook for her friends. She has also become a recent convert to Pilates, which she knows she should do more often.
Fun enemies to lovers/office romance story. Heroine doesn’t like the hero because he’s too good-looking and the office playboy. Hero thinks heroine is a prissy prude. They end up stuck in an elevator and all those strong feelings turn to lust. (They do talk as well)
Turns out hero is a commitment-phobe because his twin brother died three years before. Heroine is an all-business high achiever because her father never pays any attention to her.
Their relationship continues to progress as the heroine trains for a triathlon and they are both assigned to the same client. The H/h reach out to each other at different times. The hero helps the heroine over her claustrophobia in the elevator. The heroine is there when the hero finally gives into his grief. They are good team.
Because this is a Blaze there are lot of sex scenes, but for the most part, they aren’t too repetitious. The contemporary/humorous references seem really dated now – but this story is 15 years old already!
The cover is not only out of focus, but inaccurate. Heroine is described as petite and cute. The hero is tall and hunky.
I was a sucker for this one as soon as I saw the premise was about two co-workers who *think* they don't like each other. Another fun, great contemporary--that makes three in a row for me!
I don't get why there are so many low reviews for this book. It's easily one of the best Blaze titles I've read. Claire and Jack are interesting, well-rounded characters. I don't think I've ever seen a tri-athlete heroine before and Jack's reasons for being commitment shy are more palatable than the old "my parents didn't get along and that's why I'm a skirt-chaser" excuse. Add some snappy dialogue and some wicked hot chemistry and it's recipe for Blaze success!
Plotnya cakep, nggak ngebosenin sama sekali.
Claire's always coloured within the lines (Sarah Mayberry's words), and done things right to the tee. So when she finds herself trapped in an elevator with Jack, the office playboy, it was either talk to him or succumb to her fear of small spaces. Turned out though, that she ended up succumbing to something else: rather, someone else. Namely, Jack.
It was amazing watching their ensuing attraction play out. I'm not going to say anything else, other than that it was true and it was heart-felt.
And because this is Sarah Mayberry, their concerns were legitimate, and rang true at every point. I understood Claire's fears (like anyone), she hated the idea of being hurt by the one she loved. And while I hadn't been in Jack's position before (nor do I want to...), his reluctance to seek anything permanent was really honest too.
Tema benci jadi cinta sudah umum. Tapi benci berubah jadi cinta gara-gara terjebak bersama di lift, mungkin bukan sesuatu yg umum. Itulah yg terjadi pada Claire Marsden. Pandangannya ttg Jack Brooks yg playboy mendadak berubah sejak kejadian tsb.
It was nice that the reason for a lack of commitment was not the traditional, "I've had my heart broken" theme. Good book. Nicely paced except for about the middle which I felt just dragged out the inevitably a bit too long.
I also wasn't totally on board with the description of the hero: 3/4 board shorts and a wrinkled shirt? Well, it takes all kinds, right? He sounded better OUT of his clothes than IN.
[Snicker] Never thought I would make such a sexist comment!
The other issue I had was with him being such a manwho^%! If they are going to have a serious relationship, they gotta switch jobs 'cause he's had sex with over 1/2 the women in the building. I mean, women were crying that they only got one night with him.
Just...yuck! Her freaking best friend even slept with him! Maybe it's just me, but I think the author went a little overboard with his promiscuity at the office. That many women, and he didn't know-until the heroine told him-what was being said about him?
Horrible cover (he looks like an intern and I have no words for her outfit) but the book wasn't bad. I like the Australian setting, the realistic business situation and that the heroine was a triathlete. The hero's situation was heart breaking and I liked that he wasn't 'cured' at the end because there's no way you can completely get pass that. You just have to learn to live with the pain.
The heroine was a bit too dramatic so that got old after a while. But this was definitely a decent read, specially for those that like 'enemies to lovers' tropes.
I haven't been this wowed by the prose of a romance writer since Katherine Applegate wrote romances as Katherine Kendall (before she went on to be a multimillionaire by writing Animorphs). It's the writing skill that's knocking my socks off first here. Solid writing, characters, dialog, and descriptions that serve the story rather than just fill pages. Descriptions of the business world that are relatively realistic. This Aussie author has it all.
Plot: Two enemies at a business with secret wounds that manifest in their love lives are stuck on an elevator for hours, at first sniping badly at each other, but then having quick sex there, and shenanigans ensue. At times laugh aloud funny, at times moving, and so very well written. My library has three others by her and I definitely will read them all.
Some books you read are timeless, others are ahead of their and our time. And others are so nostalgic because they bring you back to a certain era.
In the case of Can't Get Enough: it's a fun yet typical 2005 chick-flick. 2 work nemesis discover their sexual chemistry when they are locked up in a elevator and they deal with the after math with a looooot of push and pull.
This is my most favorite office romance I've ever read. I loved this book. I don't even understand why more people haven't read this.
I will start with the cover. Isn't it so cute? And not overtly sexual? That's how I decided to even read the back cover. And then I found out that it was a enemies to lovers office romance, another one of my favorite themes. I was already half won over before I even read the book. I don't usually let myself read books with high expectations, but this book was splendid.
Jack, our commitment phobic player/hero and Claire, our competent, anal heroine (who also happens to be a triathlete) have great chemistry. Every scene together or even separate, thinking about each other, were steamy. And it all starts when they get stuck in the elevator together, alone, for hours. They both are emotionally damaged, Claire for having a negligent father, while Jack had lost his twin to kidney disease. I loved how Jack had a reason deeper than his mother's infidelity to fear commitment (his parents actually sound like nice people).
The entire book is a roller coaster ride of emotions, from both Jack and Claire, and the execution was well-done. The last part was dragged out, but I felt like it was necessary. Jack deserves some pain.
Well worth the read and I am highly tempted to search and buy this book.
I love Sarah Mayberry, but this one is too frustrating for me. The story actually had a lot of potential. But I really couldn't stand the last part when Jack told Claire he loved her and she ran away. Kept on saying he just felt sorry for her. All while every encounter of them was never without horniness from both part. I understood the daddy issue for her but still this was too much for me.
Plotnya datar dan mudah ditebak. Konfliknya nggak greget.
Makasih hadiahnya ekstranya, Forum. T_____T

This book was excellent! I read it in a Harlequin set, so I wasn’t aware that it was a Blaze novel, which meant that it was a bit hotter than I usually read. But Sarah Mayberry made the book exciting and enjoyable!
4 Stars! ~ Working for the same publishing company, but a few floors apart, Jack and Claire seem to have rubbed each other the wrong way. Claire is annoyed with Jack's office playboy reputation and his cocky attitude. Jack thinks Claire is uptight and prissy and that she needs changes in her life. Stuck in an elevator alone with each other for four hours, soon has them both realizing there is more to the other than meets the eye. They're soon confiding in each other and taking off their clothes to stiffle the summer heat. But it's not just lack of air conditioning that's heating up the elevator! After the most amazing sex either has experienced, they suddenly find themselves on path neither dreamed they follow.
There's alot in this book. Sexy love scenes, of course, but alot of emotional intensity. Ms. Mayberry creates likable characters that have pasts and depths to them. Even though some of the topics are intense, there is plenty of witty dialogue to help lift the mood. Over all a very good debut for Ms. Mayberry I'm looking forward to reading her May Blaze!
I received this book as part of my Blaze subscription. Once again, I think I passed this one by because of the cover models. Both models look like second year college students. I know Blaze is trying to attract the younger reader, but with characters that have executive positions in a publishing company, I would have liked the models to be more representative. Unless, I'm misreading the characters to suit my own age (almost to the top of the hill and looking over LOL) This was an excellent debut for Ms. Mayberry.

Me loved Sarah Mayberry's. Mostly. Thanks to Vita who recommended it to me. I've planned to read this one cause she said this one was good, too. But well, I didn't really like the cover. But then really, don't judge this book by its cover because from the description inside, Jack was supposed to be waaaaay taller than the guy on the cover. It's said that Claire's height was around (or almost?) his armpit. So she must be shorter than Jack, right? Anyway, one of the reason I loved this book because they're not really totally strangers to each other. They worked in the same building, Claire hated Jack, and Jack thought she's prissy and uptight. I also loved the fact that it took weeks for them to start falling in love to another. So you could say it was quiet natural. There were ups and downs. I loved when Jack brought her flowers and shocked to see her black eye (thanks to him and his drunk behavior) and made people on her floor surprised. ^^ I really wished for a scene where Jack had a chance to introduce Claire to his parents. :)
*the most memorable part: When Jack said there was something on Claire's face, I was guessing it was the tissue Claire used, but then he said, "It's from your nose." Oooookaaaaaaay ... I was like, if I were Claire, surely I'd jumped out of the car and running away from Jack's car! Dear earth, do please swallow me. Hohohohoho...

Ok I had to get past the bad cover. The Hero is supposed to be a big charming guy who likes to dress casual and the heroine is a petite serious kind of girl. In the cover the heroine looks like an amazon, I think she's taller than the guy and the guy looks like s teenage messenger.
Anyway it was a good enough story. What I like about the author is she allowed the couple to develop a connection before something physical happened between them. So it wasn't just them giving in to a momentary lust. When they were trapped in the elevator, they chatted and found out things about each other and laughed together, so it did give an added dimension to their relationship before they acted on the attraction. It makes us readers hopeful that they have a solid foundation to build a relationship on.
I didn't hate it. In fact the second half of the book I would even say that I liked. Nonetheless, it didn't live up to the high expectations I have for a book by Sarah Mayberry.
The characters started to feel a bit more real and rounded towards the end, but not enough for me to disregard how over the top and shrieking they were during the first half. Still, the sex was hot and in the end it wasn't a bad read, it was an underwhelming Mayberry.
Mayberry's first book and surprisingly good for a first, but she's gotten a lot better. Features a prickly triathlete and the office stud she loves to hate. Until they get stuck together in an elevator. Then he becomes the office stud she loves to sex up.
Ugh, this one's a big huge no for me, entirely because of the awful hero. Mayberry's such a strong writer, but she couldn't redeem him. He's the office playboy - or, more accurately, manwhore; when we meet him he's thinking about how he prefers his women under the age of twenty (yes, you read that right) and blonde, and he's basically slept with all the single women who work in his media company... and he's an editor, so given his preference for very young women, that means a lot of interns and very junior hires. The company's fairly sexist, so when Claire, the heroine, gets a home improvement magazine started up, the partner company wants a man involved, and their boss essentially foists Jack on Claire. While Jack at least has the decency to resist this, it's super gross and the reader is supposed to be grateful whenever he's actually decent about it, agreeing to play a small role, etc. THEN he totally blows off the very important meeting where he's supposed to be introduced to the partner company, and we're supposed to understand that it's because of his Personal Trauma, but... I already don't like the guy so I'm wildly unimpressed: he screws every intern in sight, calls the heroine "uptight," gets given privileges, jobs, etc. explicitly because he's a dude, and clearly gets away with wildly unprofessional behavior because he's a cool dude and other dudes like him, and now he's blowing off professional responsibilities in a way that impacts the heroine's work life. This guy is like the living embodiment of male privilege. Oh, and let's not forget I mean, when the hero starts going after the heroine in earnest, literally even his own friends are telling him not to do it because he is too much of a jerk and it would be a dick move to inflict his jerkitude on her. That's someone who has a lot of work to do on himself before he's ready for a relationship, and I hate books where the hero is an enormous dick and only the heroine can redeem him. This is, alas, one of those.
I really like Sarah Mayberry. Her writing style works for me and she does emotion so well. But the man-whore in this book was just too OTT for me. Mayberry really overdid it.
Early in the book, Claire and her best friend at work go out for coffee and talk about the friend's past sexual relationship with Jack. I almost quit reading because of the ick factor of sleeping with the man who also slept with your best friend. Jack has been so busy that he has slept with half the women at the company but is surprised to learn that he has a reputation and what is being said about him. He is so clueless, he has no idea of the broken hearts he leaves behind. I really struggle moving past that kind of history with my H.
I also find it impossible that Claire can keep working at the same company as him. Claire is going to need to find a new job because she won't be able to go into work and not run into Jack's many many many ex partners. No thanks! I realise this is fiction but in the real world, that would not fly.
One thing about Mayberry's writing is that no one cares about any of that stuff and it takes a backseat to all the other conflict the characters are dealing with.
Jack has his own demons and he did see that maybe his past wasn't the best plan. Claire also has her own insecurities and I loved seeing them come together and be there for each other.
So, if you can handle the man-whore H, this is a pretty good book.
Wkwk
Claire and Jack aren't exactly nemeses but they're definitely not friendly. The story opens with Jack stealing Claire's parking spot and then being forced onto her team because the customer she worked so hard to woo is a raging misogynist and they just need a man. They have sparks that explode when they are trapped in an elevator together. Not a new trope but interesting. I didn't feel like we saw enough of the relationship to understand why Jack suddenly went from being a player to being a one-woman man but an okay story overall.
But overall, aku suka buku ini.
This is a book I had in my book closet but had not read yet. For some reason it didn't appeal to me too much because it was pretty old. I'm glad I've made the time to actually read the book. [SPOILER] This book is about Claire and Jack. They get stuck in an elevator and from there on the relationship begins. Because it is a Harlequin Sexy book, it has enough hot scenes to give goosebumps.
Apa ya ndak akward ya hubungan persahabatan Claire (mbaknya tokoh utama) sama Katherine (sahabat karib mbaknya tokoh utama)?? Si Kat pernah 'bobo bareng' sama Jack eh (mas-nya tokoh utama yang akhirnya bersatu bahagia sama mbaknya tokoh utama 😅)
