Trace and Dwayne have been together a lot of years when Dwayne decides he's bored and wants to leave. Hurting and growly, Trace tells Dwayne to just go as he prepares the ranch for the mother of all storms his knees are telling him is coming. Will he be able to weather the storms both nature and Dwayne are throwing at him? Or will his life be changed forever?
There are some stories that just stick with you even years later. Then, there are other stories that you don't love the first time, because they so defy your expectations. Ones you just can't get your brain wrapped around what is going on to see the story beneath. Both of these were true for me when it came to Stormclouds. It is why I found myself looking for this story a decade after 1st reading it in the Cowboy Up anthology not for the 1st time.
First, it is not your typical romance. These are 2 men, who are all men. They've been together for 10 years, and it starts after one has left.
It is not a story about the excitement of 1st love or the butterflies of a new romance. This may take an older reader to truly appreciate, because this is about seeing love in the little things when life wears you down. It's about realizing what you have in a true, time tested, partner is stronger and much RARER than the fleeting excitement of something new. It is about love being a choice as passion ebbs and flows over the years, and then finding that spark again together.
Short story about two cowboys men who fight - not saying much - despite the fact they really love each other deeply. Dwayne is bored and wants to leave; Trace is happy to finally have a home on his ranch. I loved the short sentences, basic words and directness of the language as Trace tells the story. It reflected the 'cowboy' mentality really well. As the story continues and a hurrican blows in, it becomes clear there are things more imporatnt than whether or not you saw the world, and I liked that as well.
If you like stubborn men who don't say much (and would die before talking about their feelings), and if you like cowboys, fights and make-up sex, you will probably like this story.
This is the second short I've read by this author and I have to say the amount of emotion and feeling and story Dallas Coleman is able to put in such a short story is amazing!
