Up and Down on the Downtown Eastside is a fast-paced but harsh story involving drug addicts and other low income residents in the ghetto that is Vancouver's drug-ravaged Downtown Eastside. Fans of Irvine Welsh and Hunter S Thompson will appreciate the non-stop black humour that prevents the book from being dragged down by the bleakness and intensity of the subject matter. Although highly entertaining, this novel, like all of Walter's work, is not for the easily offended or weak of heart.
Chris Walter and his style of writing along with his subject matter is not for the faint of heart. If you can go deep into the gutter then his books are always ready to take you there. I have a little chuckle as I read these books because his books are like taking a little walkabout on the DTES if you are familiar with the area. I can picture the places he is writing about and see the people in my mind. I am supposing this is why I am a fan of his. I think Chris Walter has great style but he won't be for everyone. Pick it up if you dare and take a walk on the wild side.
I loved the characters in this book. This story is happening every day down there and Chris Walter depicts that struggle perfectly in this story. It's hardly a work of fiction, I feel like I know the people in this story
