About the author

Diamond Shumsher Rana (डायमनशमशेर राणा) was born at Tansen Durbar in Palpa, where his grandfather, Sher Shumshere Jung Bahadur Rana, was governor. His father Buddha Shumshere Jung Bahadur Rana was a colonel in the Royal Nepal Army.Rana enjoyed a privileged upbringing and was a captain in the Royal Nepal Army. In 1948 Rana travelled to Benaras, India and had his first novel Basanti published. In Nepal, he had aligned himself with an anti-establishment faction of the Rana regime and was arrested, court-martialled and sentenced to death but was later freed after members of the Rana family pressured the regime for his release. Rana later joined the political opposition and was a member of the Nepali Congress Party from 1954 to 1987.

नेपालको कहाली लाग्दो इतिहासको सुन्दर प्रश्तुति हो सेतो बाघ । पढ्दा पटक्कै अल्छी नलाग्ने, सुरुदेखी अन्त्यसम्मै पाठकलाई बाँधेर राख्न सक्ने यस्ता उपन्यासहरु नेपाली साहित्यमा कमै देख्न पाइन्छ । यसमा जङ्गबहादुरको वंशको पतन कसरी भयो भन्ने कुरा देखाईएको छ । प्रेमका कुराहरु पनि छन्‌ साथै ईर्ष्या, घृणा, धोका, षड्यन्त्र आदीको पनि सजीव चित्रण गरिएको छ । पैसा, पावर र कुर्सीले कसरी आफन्त-आफन्तहरु विचमै दुश्मनी पैदा गराउँछ भन्ने जान्न चाहनु हुन्छ भने यो उपन्यास पढ्नुस । पुरानो उपन्यास भएपनि यसमा बुझ्दै नबुझिने, कठीन शब्दहरुको प्रयोग गरिएको छैन, जुन हामी युवाहरुकोलागि राहतको विषय हो । अन्यमा यती भन्न चाहन्छु,"सेतो बाघ पढ्नुहोस्‌, जरुर पढ्नुहोस्‌ ।"

"Seto Bagh" dives deep into the lives and politics of the affluent & much acclaimed Rana family of Nepal & even though most accounts of this book are highly dubious considering the fact that the author was in prison when these events took place, Seto Bagh was an absolutely insightful read. moreover, a few romantic scenes sprinkled in between were like a cherry on top. thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. 4/5.

Fantastic work by Diamond Sumsher. The book painfully sheds light on the political history of Nepal. It makes us question what we are currently doing to make the most out the freedom we, the citizen, possess today.

खगेन्द्र नेपालीको आवाजमा डायमण्ड शमशेरको सेतो बाघ सुनियो । पटक पटक पढ्न खोजेको तर मोटाइका कारण छोडेको यो किताब सुन्दा गज्जब लाग्यो । वसन्तीमा जंगेको उदयको कथा भनिसकेपछि जंगबहादुरका छोरा जगतजंगको कथालाई लेखकले यो किताबमा लेखेका छन् ।

हुन त नेपालीहरु पटकपटक जंगे खोज्छन् । तर जंगे र उसको व्यवस्थाले देशलाई मात्रै हैन उसकै सन्तानलाई पनि पिरायो भन्ने यो किताब पढेपछि प्रष्टै बुझिन्छ । सत्ता परिवर्तन अहिले पनि हुन्छ । एक अर्कालाई पदच्युत गर्ने खेल अहिले पनि हुन्छ तर त्यसका लागि रगतकै खोलो चाहिं बग्दैन । सधैं बग्दैन भनौं नत्र क्रान्ती पिच्छे ज्यान त गई नै रहेको छ । अथवा यो भनौं कि टाउकेहरुको टाउको जोगिएको छ । साधारण मान्छेमा खतरा सरेको छ ।

किताबमा प्रजातन्त्रका कुरा र वेलायती व्यवस्थाका कुरा पनि सोमनाथ नामका पात्र बाट बराबर आएको छ । तिब्बत युद्धको कुरा पनि छ । अनि उपेन्द्र विक्रमको प्रसंग आउंदा Saguna Shah दिदिको सम्झना आउंदै थियो । कान्छा माहारानीमा छुस्स आएका पात्र यसमा अलि बढि आएका छन् । अरु त सुनेरै मजा लिनुस् ।

क्लाइमेक्सका लागि जरुरी थियाे जङ्गबहादुर र उनका भाइहरूकाे सम्बन्ध केलाउनु । ती दाजुभाइमा मेलमिलाप भए पनि तिनका सन्तानका बीचमा राम्राे सम्बन्ध देखिँदैन । तर केही दृश्यमा मात्रै सीमित छ । यता धीर समशेरका घरमा खानलाउनकाे दु:ख थियोे भन्ने कुरा अलि अपत्यारिलो छ । धीर सानाे उमेरमै जर्नेल भएका थिए, जङ्गबहादुरले पनि माया गरेका प्रसङ्ग छन् । जङ्गबहादुरले बरु कन्जुस्याइँ गर्थे भन्ने कुरा अाएकाे भए त्याे जङ्ग र समशेर खलककाे झगडाकाे बीउ बन्ने थियाे ।

Love from Sikkim.
I watched a movie by the same name on YouTube. It was awesome. Now I definitely want to read the book too, but it’s hard to get these books here in Sikkim. All I could do is add these great Nepali books to my “to read” collection and wait for this Covid lockdown to get over, so I could go to Nepal for some book-shopping.
If there is anyway I can buy Nepali book online, please let me know. If, anyone can share in some way, that would be nice too.

देव शमशेर र रणोद्दीप सिंहको निष्कपट चित्र मस्तिष्कमा प्रतिविम्बित गराउने,
इतिहासमै गुमनाम उपेन्द्रविक्रम र नरेन्द्र विक्रम जस्ता शाहवंशीय युवराजहरूसँग परिचय गराउने,
शक्तिको सरण पर्ने र निमुखाको चीरहरण गर्ने मानवीय चरित्रलाई चारचित पार्ने - यो कृति - उपन्यास कम र हकीकत बढी!

My key take away from this book is that power mongering sees no relation - not even blood. It's solely concerned with selfishness, insecurity, conspiracies and unfortunate consequences, not just for the citizens and the country, but also for the direct and indirect participants in that race. Good read! Enjoyed it!

Great book, certainly makes me want to delve deeper into the History of Nepal. The English translation of this book is well done, but I still wish I could’ve read it in Nepali.

This books was a trip down the slightly fictionalized true event in the lane of Nepal's history where the writer has used the story and real life incidents to expose and criticize the swamp that is autocratic rule and how it is a system that makes enemies out of family and brings with it never-ending paranoia.
