In this Little-Red-Riding-Hood-inspired paranormal fairy tale, the roles of prey and predator are blurred.
Seventeen-year-old Aiden Young travels to Indiana for his aunt's funeral, where his unfortunate mistake leads to the discovery of the family's supernatural secret. Before the weekend is over, he's trapped by a blizzard in his grandmother's spooky old house in the middle of the woods, along with his superstitious cousin and his manipulating girlfriend. But the fear growing inside the house might prove more dangerous than the storm. And soon, Aiden faces life and death decisions, but he doesn't know whom he can trust or who needs to be saved ... or who might turn into a werewolf.

She has several supernatural fairy tale inspired stories, including novels, a short story collection, and Kindle Vella series. Her latest adventure is Potion: A Witchy Fairy Tale a contemporary retelling (#witchesbebitches).
Besides writing, life is all about family, food, book-club, BBQ team, festivals, trivia (even though she's horrible at it), and drinking on patios – All of which she shares on Instagram 😊

Silverweed by Dorlana Vann is a very weird take on the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale.
Aiden flies to Indiana along with his mom to take care of his grandmother after his aunt's death. He meets his cousin Diesel who is fairly superstitious and a bit paranoid. When Diesel leaves with his girlfriend Scarlet and his mom flies back to Texas to take care of his sick father, he is left alone to take care of his granny, instructions asking him to feed her "silverweed" muffins every sunset without fail.
I was surprised by how uniquely weird this story was. I couldn't make sense of who the hero and the villain were. It kept me guessing right until the end and there were several moments where I truly believed some of the cast won't survive. However, the story was so well written, I couldn't have guessed the ending. It was a bit short, and explanations for everything were few and short. I definitely would have loved this one a lot more if both the characters and the story were a bit more fleshed out.
Silverweed is a Little Red Riding Hood inspired fairy tale that has all sorts of twists & turns, yet it’s only 81 pages.
Aiden travels with his mother to his grandmothers house after the death of his aunt, only going with her to avoid a break up with his girlfriend Summer. Once they arrive, Aiden discovers how weird his Granny & cousin Diesel are. They believe in all sorts of superstitions, to the point Aiden thinks them both crazy.
When his baby brother & father come down with an illness, Aiden’s mother flys home leaving Aiden to care for his Granny. Little does he know, the recipe his cousin Diesel said she must have every evening, stops her from changing into something Aiden wouldn’t have believed possible had he not seen it with his own eyes.
I was pleasantly surprised with Ms. Vann’s writing, it drew me in right from the start & kept the suspense level high all through-out the book. My only issue was it all resolved a little too fast for me, but I understand it’s only a novella. I liked how Ms. Vann used Little Red Riding Hood as inspiration but totally flipped it on it’s tale.
You don’t know who the bad guy or girl is, it keeps flipping on you! Seriously, at first I thought it was one person & by the end of the book, I had went through the same thoughts with all of the characters! It was like a supernatural version of CLUE.
Silverweed is a great guessing game & a totally different version of a fairy tale we all know by heart.
Don't let the fact that this is based on Little Red Riding Hood keep you from reading this. I doubt you will see much of the original story in this other than chapter titles. The girl Scarlet, well, I just wanted to slap the crap out of her through most of the story, I think she was more monster than the werewolves. Very well written story.
Silverweed by Dorlana Vann is a pleasant surprise. Subtitled a Supernatural Fairy Tale, the plot centers on a few characters and one principle setting. Seventeen-year-old Aiden and his mother are visiting their long-estranged grandmother after Aiden’s aunt has died. While there, they meet Aiden’s cousin Diesel and Scarlet, his girlfriend. When Aiden’s mother is called away, the fates of Aiden, his grandmother, Diesel, and Scarlet come together in a shocking way. This novel is hard to review without giving too much away. It ingeniously hearkens back to the Red Riding Hood fairytale with its chapter titles and sequences. The inspired titles accurately describe the increasingly desperate situation of the four snowed-in characters. As the novel continues, alliances shift, people change, and the four, especially the teenagers, have to deal with the fallout. When I started Silverweed, I thought I was getting one thing, but ended up with something far more interesting. After a few chapters, the story unfolds into something both wondrous and frightening. The book takes its readers on a dark journey set in the harsh season of winter, and twists its narrative to its fascinating conclusion.
Diesel, his girlfriend Scarlet, and his cousin Aiden are snowed in, trapped with a weregranny upstairs. Great spin on Little Red Riding Hood. Would be completely terrifying having the big bad wolf trying to kill you from the inside out. The wolf is the beast trapped inside you once you have been bitten and the only hope you, and the people that surround you, of surviving is to try not to lose your mind to the beast. Silverweed is the only solution that has been found to help granny not lose herself completely. But what if granny didn't get her silverweed? I loved all the characters. Scarlett was so annoying though, I just wanted her to hurry up and get killed off, but she did grow on me. She was selfish and controlling at first, but that just seemed to be because she had no control over her own life. Aiden was my absolute favorite and I hope he gets a full length book of his own one day. I had no idea what was going to happen to who next. Great spins. Great characters. It's a short, fast read. Too short, if you ask me. I wanted more. Loved it.
Granny was bitten by a werewolf and so when the moon is full she turns. Diesel her grandson, has always lived with Granny and his mother Rose until Rose dies. Scarlet, his girlfriend wants to leave down and leave Diesel’s strange family behind.
When his Aunt Lucy and cousin Aiden come to Rose’s funeral Scarlett sees a way to leave Granny behind. Instead she turns the fairy tale to life.
Shapeshifting is becoming a well-written genre, and I found this an interesting adaptation of the fairy tale.
This is the second book in the Supernatural Fairy Tale Series written by Author Dorlana Vann.
A modern day retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. What happens when Teenager Aiden is left caring for his Grandmother and forgets to give her her nightly Silverweed Muffins, a night he'll never forget.
I quite enjoyed this story with it's changes. The main character is male and in his late teens no little girls in this story. The story is well written with action filled suspense filled storyline that keeps you interested. Definitely recommend reading.
It seemed to be wearing a pink nightgown… similar to Granny's nightgown. - Aiden, Silverweed.
Ok let me first start off by saying I won this book from the Drawings here on GoodReads { First Reads } .. I was super excitied to win and was looking forward to starting the book as soon as I got it in the mail.. However the book was a little of a Let down.. I mean you kept guessing what was going to happen with Granny and wonder why these kids were the ones going through this stuff alone.. I was just thinking there would be a little more to it is all.. I mean it was good as far as just a quick read but I wanted a little more Bite to it.. { excuse to the Pun .. lol }..
I liked it. The characters were good and when there were conversations it was interesting and fairly realistic. I enjoyed those parts. The mystery and whatnot is a bit undone with the window into every characters head. It's not all that immature for a young adults book and the characters were well done. Over all pretty good.
As a free book for Kindel, I did not expect it was so well written. But the idea of make a modern version from a traditional story like Little Red Riding Hood is bright and the result is pretty well made.
Perhaps the book lacked of a bit of surprise at the end and some depth to the characters but ultimately was pleasantly surprised.
I am blown away by my friend Dorlana's ability to tell a good story. It's been awhile since I finished this one, so I can't really go into the details, but I enjoyed the read very much!
I haven't read many short stories so I don't have much in way of comparison but I will say that I enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more by Dorlana Vann.
