Serious disappointment after the first book. Mach 20+ jets, bionic suits (with cloaking devices). Yes, I know these things are in the works, and exist, but it was just too much.

Special forces team taking a highs school girl with them on the rescue mission.

While I appreciate the obvious nod to Private Hudson from Aliens, it felt cheap and campy.

The military is still trying to kill the teen group?? After the military sent in a team to try to rescue Maria?

This book stepped up a bit by throwing our heroine back into the dangerous world she had just escaped. We find all our characters back and ready to fight their way out for the good of humanity. There is enough tension to keep you turning pages.

All the spoiler probably, who knows

I was hoping for zombies, especially after the first book didn't deliver enough of them.

Turns out that while there are zombies, they get overshadowed by zombie esque dingos ?

And don't forget the mechanical spiders, living wires that slice trough buildings and tanks and last but not least a giant that rips helicopters out of the sky and kills people?

Oh yeah and a mysterious red mist/fog/dust storm thingy after an equally mysterious explosion?
Ah darn, almost forgot some kinda tentacle thing that spears people trough their chest?????

Wtf?!

But wait! There's more!

Our mc got out of Australia, as lone survivor, and ends up back in the USA.

The military threatens her to say nothing about their weird AF way of dealing with the infection but also gives her a bodyguard.

After couple days there's aparantly an radio transmission of her friends begging for help.
(somehow all of them got together without dying)

Military decides eh, let's save the supossed immune one, their whole team dies almost immediately after hitting Australia, their heli gets torn apart and then they are food for the infected.

Now, this bodyguard is of course some black op mercenary that works for "someone".
The "someone" wants them to rescue Maria and they need our mc along for some bullshit reason.

Cue the same strategy as the military with about the same consequences... Even though they wear exo suits that are virtually indisctructable etc etc.

Honestly, I struggled to read this since almost the start and it just kept getting more and more ridiculous and I just.. I give up.

Another amazing book by James Harden. I love the plot and the new characters added. Once you start reading it, you will find it extremely hard to put down. I highly recommend this book to everyone

Book 2

The story gets worse. They haven't got a chance along that far . too many ways to die. Time for book 3.

Oh, wow. Remember when I loved the first book and thought this was going to be a GREAT series?

Well. This book made sure to let me know how wrong I was.

Look, I'm all for some crazy fun, okay? But giving a 19yo boy a jet that flies sixteen times the light speed? A special suit that can make you invisible? Random metal spider thing? Whatever that thing with tentacles was?

Come on. It's a zombie book. We know we need to suspend disbelief for zombie-related stuff. Keep your stupid hi-tech fantasies somewhere else. It was simply too hard to take it all seriously because THIS DOESN'T EXIST. And IF it did, they'd NOT be getting used like this. By these people. Just... stop it.

Moving on from that. People always get lucky in books. Cause that's how it is. But these characters are TOO lucky. Jack jumped from the boat. Swam a lot. Got to the city. Ran around for ages. And somehow survived the zombie apocalypse AND the military attacks, only to find the other two characters. AND THEN THEY ALL FIND REBECCA AND DANIEL. And, of course, Kim is alive somewhere too.

Nope. Sorry. Sometimes you gotta accept that someone is going to die. They are kids running around being TOO lucky and it stopped being fun. Now it's just ridiculous.

What a huge disappointment.

Hmmmm, ok, well... this is sort of tough.

I liked the continuing adventures of our intrepid young zombie fighters... but wow. Some of this was a bit out there in terms of suspending disbelief. Invisible camouflage suits? The military and the mercenaries get splatted ASAP, but the inexperienced teens manage to survive?

Gah. I don't know what to do with that. Basically every time something like that was mentioned, it just JERKED me forcibly out of the story again.

It was better written than the first, but the technology and survival rate etc was really hard to deal with. I'll keep reading, I need closure, but I'm not as enthusiastic as I was.

Recommended, because it's still fun, but with the caveat that you're not going to be able to buy one of these super suits off eBay any time soon.

Definitely better than the first one. There was a lot more action, it made a little more sense, and some new characters were introduced that really added to the story.

Some of my old gripes are back; namely, this man seriously needs an editor/proofreader. The typos weren't as bad in this novel, but they were still pretty bad. Furthermore, there is a lull in action (and overall story movement) in the middle of the book that kind of unnecessarily breaks up what's happening in the story.

There were also a few unbelievable turns as far as risks posed to the main character(s), but I do enjoy the "danger on multiple fronts" factor with the military on one side and the infected on the other side.

“She was the only one to get out”

The second book of J.L. Harden’s The Secret Apocalypse series is again superb. We start again with Rebecca but this time in Qarantine back in the USA. A mission takes her back to where it al started and re-unite with her friends to save Maria....

I loved this book as the friendship grows, armed with anew soldier in Daniel and a superb suit with super powerful tech. They find Kenji, Jack and Maria. The escape from the hoards of infected is ahrd and tiring but they do it and end up in the Never never.....

Main Characters: Daniel, Rebecca, Kenji, Jack, Maria
Other Characters: Ethan, Smithy, Grifiths
Places: Sydney, USA

I think The Secret Apocalypse is a bone crushing, eye blinding, teeth shattering book to read. It's really action packed with tons of explosions. It's about a zombie apocalypse that starts in Australia then later spreads to New Zealand. Also, the zombie virus is called the oz virus. First it attacks your nerve system then travels through your blood stream to the brain so it take over the rest of the body. I would really recommend this to someone who likes zombies.

Get the next book too

I enjoyed this story. If you can get by a few discrepancies. I don't know about a nineteen year old being special forces material. A sixteen year old girl is OK. I guess if you went with a sixteen year old to have a guy interest, it can't be a guy too old. Other than their ages, this is an interesting concept. Keep the plague in Australia. The book ends with them OK, but they are on a quest......
