This is a completely revised and expanded edition of the best-selling, comprehensive guide covering not only reasons to move to Maine but also what newcomers will find once they get here. The book answers questions about what Maine is really like as a place to live, providing a broad range of information about schools, housing, cultural life, taxes, work and employment opportunities, and even the weather.
Vicki has written scores of magazine articles, two travel books for people interested in Maine, a CD walking tour about her town, and a new mystery series featuring red hot Realtor Darby Farr. First in the series, A HOUSE TO DIE FOR, has received rave reviews, and KILLER LISTING, Darby's second mystery, comes out in April of 2011. (Midnight Ink.)
Vicki likes to say she is "all about houses." She writes about them in her mystery series, sells them as a real estate agent on the coast of Maine, and helps build them through her longtime involvement with Habitat for Humanity.
She is an avid reader, hiker, knitter and skier and enjoys writing the kind of books she herself loves to read.
As someone who is moving to Maine in 9 days, I found this book to be super helpful and full of great information! I enjoyed it very much and plan to keep it by my side throughout the next few months. I received the 2015 edition as a Christmas gift and am so glad I did. I highly recommend to anyone moving (or considering moving) to Maine.
Unfortunately the book is outdated. The housing market has exploded with house prices rising. Granted it is still more affordable than east coast urban areas bit the search does take longer. It book would have been well served to have some maps. I wanted to see where some of the smaller towns referenced were at in relationship to Portland, Augusta, and Bangor.
The book was invaluable. Moving from Texas to Maine was indeed a shock. Especially moving in October when the winter was quickly approaching. I found this book easy to read, accurate, personable and full of things I needed to know to keep alive during -3F nights. I would personally thank the author for writing it.
i found this book in an independent bookstore in portland, maine, and in a fit of sentiment (you should've seen me, all twitchy) i picked it up. written in a friendly, next-door-neighbor tone, the book gives many tips and tidbits of information about the state. clearly, the author is in love with maine, and who'd blame her? she does give the cons, as well, and anecdotal stories from people from all walks who've either moved to or from maine, for various reasons. very informative, and a quick read, too. and updated!
This is a very entertaining book. I hope she will update it because I'm curious about some of the environmental numbers. The Maine coast, from what little I've seen, would be a wonderful place to live, moose or no moose. If I were more nautically gifted, I would take visitors on puffin watchng cruises!
I bought this on impulse, although I had seen that the "revised" version was published in 2007, and I worried that a new edition might be on the way, if not already out. Sure enough, checking the author's Web page, I see that a newly updated edition is due in 2015!
I'm still glad I read this edition. Very informative, even inspiring.
Honestly, it didn't really provide any decent or useful information, that I could have otherwise found on a website somewhere. I was hoping it would provide more detailed information about locales, but alas...
