Martha E. H. Rustad is the author of more than one hundred nonfiction children's books, on topics ranging from snowflakes to termites to Ancient Babylon. She lives with her family in Brainerd, Minnesota.
This nonfiction picture book is a good way to help young readers understand why leaves change color and fall to the ground during autumn. The book discusses the way leaves and trees change throughout the seasons and introduces different plant vocabulary words. The colorful illustrations complement the text nicely. At the end of the book, there are directions for making leaf prints, a glossary, and a list of resources for further study. This would make a good book to share with young readers during the fall months.
Good book for the fall season. You could also incorporate in a leaf walk which would be fun. Art and science could be done with the leaves you collect on the leaf walk. The book was great for kindergarteners.
There are a number of things that make this series very good for both educational purposes and pleasure reading. First, the design is attractive and easy to follow. The organization works especially well for a teacher who wishes to cover certain aspects of fall in an orderly manner. I also appreciated the use of a table of contents, glossary, index, and additional resources. Each book also contains an activity that goes along with the information covered in each book. The second thing I like is the friendly and appealing illustrations. The illustrations are very child friendly. I also enjoyed the text which is simple enough for younger readers, but also includes side notes for readers who want more information. The text is written as a narrative which makes for a good read a loud. I highly recommend this series for all those that want to learn more about fall. I liked the fact that I learned some things from these books that I did not know previously. For example, I did not realize that when apple seeds are planted the apples they produce are not the same variety of apple as the seed that was planted. Lots of interesting things to learn in these books.
Fall Leaves is one of a series of Rustad's books that includes: Animals in Fall, Fall Weather, Fall Pumpkins, Fall Harvests, and Fall Apples. Each of these books is very accessible for young readers. Short sentences and simple language is paired with colorful, child-friendly illustrations.
Fall leaves introduces children to the process of photosynthesis through a discussion of leaves and how they perform vital functions in nature from their first appearance in the spring through their colorful appearance in the fall. The text is enhanced with sidebars that provide additional detail. A leaf activity, glossary and index complete the book.
Nice little chapters focusing on the science behind the season. I used the chapters about leaves throughout the seasons and leaves falling from the trees as a read aloud during a leaf-themed storytime with PreK.
This was a sweet preschool level telling ever happens when leaves change color in the fall. Since I have first graders and a preschooler I use this book to follow up With my preschooler from a more technical book that describes the same thing using words like chlorophyll.
