There are three sides to every story: his, hers, and the truth. Rozelyn De Falco has been branded an enemy and captured by the Corsetti family, intent to torture her father’s location from her. But Rozelyn has her own plans, and being imprisoned is merely one she already has in place.
Flynn Rhodes, enforcer of the Corsetti family, gains more than just a captive in Rozelyn. He finds his past. A girl he cared for when they both had different lives. But their past was a lie, and Flynn only cares about vengeance and the oaths he’s taken. In the end, freedom is simply a concept and the line between love and hate is faint.
USA Today Bestselling author M.L. Philpitt writes both dark romance and paranormal romance. When she’s not writing made-up realities, she’s reading them. She lives in Canada with her four pets and survives life with coffee and an obsession with fictional characters, especially the morally grey kind. By day, she masks as a therapist, and is still waiting for her Hogwarts letter so she can be sorted into her Ravenclaw house.
Freedom in Captivity is the 4th book in the Fractured ever after series. M.L. Philpitt did it again, she gave us one of the best mafia romances out there. This beautiful story revolves around an enforcer from the Corsetti family and a princess from the De Falco family. They meet in school and instantly have a connection and fall madly in love, but unexpected circumstances cause them to fall apart. They promised that one day they will find they way back to each other and after several years they meet again, but this time they are enemies, he is her captor and she is his captive. The book contains so many beautiful quotes that I fell in love with. If you like a very spicy book, this is it. 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Spice on another level. The sex scenes that are in this book I have never seen in other books so far.
"I was recently told the line between love and hat is thin, and you are the living, breathing proof of that fact. Mon Solein".
One thing I can tell from reading this book is that I did not get tired or frustrated with certain scenes in the book and this is the power of M.L. Philpitt's books. When I read this book it went with the flow and it has such a beautiful and heartbreaking story, I was terrified to read certain scenes because I thought I would cry.
Do not hesitate to pick up this book because it is so beautifully written and has a beautiful story.
Freedom in Captivity by M.L. Philpitt was a story that had nonstop chills running down my spine!!! This is the explosive story of Flynn and Rozelyn. They were an item years ago…until she left. Flynn was heartbroken. But, more than that…he was ANGRY. Now, years later, he is a mafia enforcer. When he discovers his next target, he is furious to see that it is Rozelyn.
He is horrendously awful to her…like any other victim. But, there is so much more here than either of them know….secrets, hatred, vengeance, comeuppance, vendettas, truths, and unbreakable vows…neither of them can change any of it…
This story was soooooooooo aaaaaaamazing!!!! These characters were honest, broken, hopeful, and every other emotion all rolled into a horrible situation. Things couldn’t be worse for the two of them…
Once upon a time a girl loved a boy who loved her back just as much. To him she was his sun and in return he was her moon but every good fairytale needs a villain and instead of a wicked stepmother, in this case it’s an evil stepfather who threatens the boy forcing the girl to break his heart to keep him safe.
The fourth book in the Fractured Ever After series and a loosely based retelling of Rapunzel for Rozelyn and Flynn. Rozelyn has been the enemy throughout this series but her story is heartbreaking and she’s just as much a victim of her stepfather as everyone else he’s came into contact with has been. When she was captured the last thing she expected was her torturer would turn out to be the boy she’d loved at sixteen and who now looked at her with such hate in his eyes – Corsetti family enforcer, Flynn Rhodes.
This was the story of two damaged people who once meant the world to each other. At times I hated Flynn for his treatment of Rozelyn and this book does veer towards the dark end of the spectrum as he tortured her albeit most of what he did was more psychological rather than physical. The only thing that redeemed him for me was that he was conflicted by his allegiance to the family who had saved him from the street and the memories of the girl he had once loved.
This is one very very dark mafia romance where I felt so sorry for Rozelyn and all that she endured. I could not stand Flynn though. He was nothing but a piece of crap that deserves to be six feet under along with Rosen and the rest of this jacked up family. Anyone who thinks it’s okay to knife and torture a woman does not deserve to be above ground anymore. He treated her worse than a slave. If we think what they did at CIA black sites were bad, this is 100 times worse! Rozelyn deserved someone so much better in my opinion. While I normally enjoy mafia type romances, I think I’m done with this so called family. They are as beyond messed up as you could get! I received an ARC copy.
Rozelyn De Falco has been captured by the Corsetti family after her everything that happened with Aurora. There's more to her plan than they know about, and it's the Corsetti's enforcers' job to find out the truth, but his past has just been tied to his chair.
I could rave about this series for hours, and honestly, M.L. Philpitt deserves way more hype!
This one is darker than the previous books, which makes sense when it's about an enemy being held captive.
Flynn was heartbroken when she left him. Now he's angry, which he uses to torment and torture her with for the truth.
Rozelyn has had to hide away any and all emotions to survive her life. She is looking out for her sister, but seeing Flynn again after so many years breaks her down in ways she was not expecting.
I love this story. These characters are both in a horrible situation where they have to choose between their allegiance and love.
They are both broken, and it's an extremely emotional story, but it's written incredibly well, and I got completely sucked into this world again.
If you like dark mafia romances with twists, suspense and loads of spice.... this series is not to be missed! ❤️
The Freedom in Captivity by M.L. Philpitt is book 4 in the Fractured Ever Afters Series. This is the story of Flynn and Rozelyn. Rozelyn and Flynn when they were younger they had been in love. But Rozelyn said goodbye to him and left him heartbroken. Now he is Flynn Rhodes the Enforcer to the Corsetti family and a deadly man. Flynn next target turns out to connected to Rozelyn. Rozeyln's life has been awful since she had to leave Flynn and she has suffered everyday. Now he isn't the man she remembers and he hurts her more each day that he has found her. This was a dark romance that does have you not being a fan of Flynn. But I did enjoy this author's writing.
Remember Rapunzel? The Freedom in Captivity has some references to Rapunzel’s story. Replace Mother Gothel by an evil stepfather and the one to take her and torture her, is the man/boy she used to love but had to let go, forced by her stepfather. For me, this book was the most emotional in the Fractured Ever After series. Rozelyn has been known as the enemy in the previous books, but this time she gets to tell her story. And there is more to tell than I could have imagined. I love reading this series and that the authors always has a fairytale based mind for the entire series.
This was the hardest book for me to get into, but I’m not sure why. By the end, I did enjoy it. Roz and Flynn are both great characters, and their story is so heartbreaking. It all comes full circle & I’m so happy they found their way back to each other. I think I am getting bored of the same storyline from the other books, just with different characters so I am glad that’s pretty much wrapped up. I’m looking forward to reading Arielle’s & Erico’s story and then Yasmine’s. I’m also interested to know more about the Seven.
Overall a solid 4 stars for the thoughtful writing and attention to detail on characters.
“you’re my sun. your kindness is so bright. your heart so fucking warm, like the sun. mon soleil.”
i haven't cried this much reading a book in a long time, and it was as cathartic to me as the journey was for these characters. second chance romance in a mafia setting simply sets the bar too high because the stakes are higher when it comes to lovers to enemies to lovers. the heartbreak, the flashbacks, the realizations, everything is bigger and better. this took tangled's story to the dark side and ran with it, really playing into flynn ryder being a criminal who keeps the fmc prisoner while also setting her free. if i thought book 2 was the best in the series up until now, this one completely obliterated that right from the very start. this couple is the definition of soulmates. and the mafia elements and interconnections are evolving beautifully alongside the timeline in which all the stories occur almost simultaneously.
“i might be your sun, but you’re my moon. full, waning, or crescent, it represents change and that’s exactly what you’ve been for me. you changed my life in all the best ways possible. my moon. ma lune.”
‼️Please check your triggers before reading this book. TW/CW includes but are not limited to recollection of physical åbūse, trāumã, tørtūre, DūbCøn, degredåtiøn, physical viøleńce and åbūse.
Holy sh*t that was IN-TENSE! Apologies to M.L. Philpitt because there’s NO way I’ll be able to put into words how I feel about this book and how absolutely amazing it is. This is my favourite book from her so far.
Shattered, obliterated into tiny tiny pieces. That’s how both my heart and soul felt reading this amazing second chances love story. Because that’s what it is. It a beautiful love story of two broken souls, two pieces of the same puzzle, un soleil et sa lune (the sun and its moon).
The vibes of this book are dark with a capital “D”. The emotions are so raw, so deep, it hurts, it crawls under your skin, the sorrow, the anger, the pain, it stays there. I loved every second of it.
I am a sucker for second chances, it’s my absolute favourite trope and I’m extra picky when it comes to them. But THIS! This was all I ever wanted and more. I was SO invested in Flynn and Rozelyn’s relationship. How they felt towards each other, both in the past and in the present. I absolutely loved the way their backstory was written. Every interaction, every heartache, every emotion was well thought of and so spot on.
Again, I’m telling you, this is not for the faint of heart. There are some topics that are not for everyone, but if it’s okay with you, read it. I hope it breaks you and it heals you like it did me.
You’ll find in this book: ☀️ Second chances 🌘 Hate to love ☀️Blood play 🌘 Knife play ☀️Revenge/hate f*ck 🌘 Soulmates ☀️ Delicious scenes 🌘Lots of emotional damage
Thank you to ML Philpitt and The Next Step PR for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Every time I think I can’t love a series more and that I have just read the best book of all, M.L. Philpitt hits me with another!
The Freedom in Captivity is the fourth book in the Fractured Ever After Series, and I am speechless.
The Freedom in Captivity is another amazing dark retelling of a favorite fairytale. This time it’s Repunzel, and @mlphilpitt grabs you from page one. The heartbreak entwined with the love-hate dynamic is absolutely masterful! Get ready for the most emotional and steamy read yet, because this story will break your heart and put it together again in the most spectacular and unique way.
Flynn and Rozelyn are amazing!
The Freedom in Captivity can be read as a standalone, but trust me, you will want to read the entire series. Each book just gets better and better!
You will be utterly consumed by the Corsetti mafia empire.
If you're after a book that will rock your world, this is the one!!! Talk about goosebumps and chills while reading this. Rozelyn and Flynn were a couple years ago, but she ended up leaving and leaving Flynn heart broke, not to mention mad as hell. Now, later on in life, Flynn is a mafia enforcer, and imagine how mad he is to realize his next target is Rozelyn. Flynn is so nasty to her, but soon enough, they are about to learn of all the secrets, vendettas, and so much more. Guys, when I tell you I couldn't get enough of this book, I'm not even kidding. I loved everything about this book, and I know you will too.
Freedom In Captivity – The Fractured Ever After Series #4 - Review
Couple: Rozelyn De Falco & Flynn Rhodes
Author: M.L. Philpitt
Tropes: dark romance, second chance romance, enemy to lovers, mafia romance, knife play, dubcon
Review: This book. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I ended up loving Rozelyn and her character. This is a dual POV romance and it is DARKER than the previous books but it somehow perfectly fits with this couple and the plot.
Rozelyn is painted as the bad guy in previous books and we finally get to read her story in this one. The story is told in present time with flashbacks to the past. She is a witty and strong FMC whose brutal upbringing shaped her into who she is but also made her iron backbone. I loved reading her chapters as she grows to love Flynn again and I really liked how she matured and realized how much she truly wanted to be part of a family.
Flynn is a lost and broken soul. He was my favorite character in this book and the way his tortured past was written and developed was phenomenal. I enjoyed how he became stronger and colder since it made him into the character needed for this romance and I really enjoyed the flashbacks from his POV since they helped me understand more about him. I also really appreciated how Flynn was like another son to the Corsetti’s. The loyalty and respect he had for Nico and Della were honest and I found myself wanting more scenes with them together. I also loved how he had to come to terms with his feelings for Rozelyn. It was done in a way that made it seem real and raw.
This couple is explosive. Rozelyn is not a gentle or quiet FMC. I found myself thinking how perfect she was for the enforcer of the Corsetti’s and her penchant for spice and pain mirrored Flynn’s. I also loved how the angst and tension built until it overflowed and left them to pick up the pieces. This book is one that is full of surprises and also gives us many answers to the De Falco leader’s twisted depravity.
I am looking forward to the next book and hope to see more bonds between the sisters.
Rating: 100+, Flynn…I have no words for how much I loved him.
We are back with book 4 of the Fractured Ever Afters series and the plot be plotting! I love how this puzzle is finally coming together. We still have two more books and a spin-off series coming up that I’m really looking forward to so for those who love diving into a whole world or universe, this is a good one with lots of books/stories to keep you in the edge of your seat! Let’s get to the details…
Rozelyn and Flynn are messy…of course they are, they’re based on Rapunzel and Flynn and they’re just as messy. Rozelyn, the De Falco mafia princess finally allowed out of her guilded tower, and Flynn, the loner bad boy who was kind of lost in his own world. When Roz was able to convince her mother to let her be a normal teenager and go to public high school where she met Flynn, they became each others world, reason for even going to school, they fell in love. Until Roz’s mom died and her dad (who was against the whole public school thing to begin with) pulled her out and threatened Flynn if she had any further connection with him.
11 years later and she’s captured by the Corsettis for drugging their mafia princess Aurora, and Flynn is now their enforcer, in charge of torture and punishment for the Corsetti mafia family after mama and papa Corsetti found him homeless behind a dumpster after Roz cut him off and broke his heart. With his life vowed to the Corsettis and his heart vowed (unknowingly at the time) to the enemy mafia princess, what trajectory will Flynn take his punishment, their relationship, and, ultimately, their lives? Will the Corsettis finally be able to catch the De Falco mafia king with the help of his captured daughter?
Rozlyn De Falco finds herself kidnapped by the Corsetti for something she did to one of their family. She finds herself in the hands of the Corsetti enforcer Flynn Rhodes. He also happens to be her boyfriend from the public high school she attended for one year before she was called home suddenly. Flynn was devastated since she was the only reason he went to school. So he left everything he had and found himself on the streets before being rescued by the Corsetti family one night. Will this discovery help or hinder Flynn's duty as the enforcer? He looks at her as a liar since her surname was different at the time, and he believes everything else, including her love for him, was a lie, or was it? M.L. keeps you turning the pages with all going on between Rozlyn and Flynn. Will Flynn be able to overcome his conflicting love between his girl and his family, who saved him and entrusted him to be their enforcer? I received an arc for my honest review for NNBB. You will love this book if you love a very dark mafia romance with conflict, twists, and turns. Although this is Book Four of The Fractured Ever Afters Series, it can be read as a standalone. However, you might want to read the other books in the series with references to characters and events in previous books in the series. There may be some triggers for people, so heed the author's warnings.
This is the 4th story in the Fractured Ever Afters Series where we get to uncover an exceptional childhood love extinguished between Rozelyn and Flynn for them to be put together again as adults 10 years later. Rozelyn was forced to walk away from Flynn and was trained for years to be a useful tool for her fathers own plan. Flynn was heartbroken and mad, leaving his abusive father to live on the streets to being found by a couple, Corsetti Family, giving him a home and a way of life as their mafia enforcer. When Flynn takes the hood off their prisoner he’s stuck speechless to see Rozelyn DeFalco their enemy, who used a difficult last name years ago. Flynn treats Rozelyn as any other enemy and when forced to face his past things start to get unsettling for them both. When her secrets are finally revealed on her terms Flynn is given an understanding of what happened and why. The Corsetti’s get her father along with the knowledge of another powerful organization that makes a business deal with them. The truth gives them a chance to move forward but when his boss steps in Rozelyn is forced to leave. The love and hate between them is what leads them to their vow as children allowing them a 2nd chance at love and peace with each other.
The Freedom In Captivity is the fourth book in the Fractured Never After series. This series does need to be read in order and starts with The Hunt in Elusion.
This one took me the longest to get through out of all the books so far. I believe this was due to the fact that the beginning is rather slow and majority of the timeframe overlaps with the previous book and we already knew Roz’s big secret.
I did enjoy getting to be inside Rozelyn’s head and having some light shed on all of the heartbreaking memories she and Flynn had to share. Rozelyn does come off as a bitch, but it’s all about survival for her. I definitely felt for her after hearing everything her father had put her through. And while I personally found the ending to be a bit anticlimactic, I do see how the author is laying the groundwork for the next series. I give this one a solid four stars. I love the authors writing style and their ability to craft characters you just can’t help caring about. I already can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🔥🔥

WOW! Now that was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. My heart was in a vice the whole way through and I didn’t know how I was going to keep it together while reading this incredible story.
Rozelyn and Flynn take us on a hate/love journey filled with so much angst, drama, violence, pain, anger and utter heartbreak that it seemed like there wasn’t going to be a happy ending for them together. But then when they let their walls down, and secrets get revealed, the healing can finally begin. Their relationship grows into something so much more than they expected.
This story was dark, twisted, depraved and HOT. It had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails like crazy and gasping at some of the shocking things that transpire between these two broken souls. I laughed, I cried, and I screamed into my pillow, but by the end I was soaring with love for Flynn and Rozelyn.
I was addicted to this story and devoured every moment not wanting to let these two go in the end.
Flynn and Rozelyns story is a Rapunzel based story that had me completely heartbroken.
"The saying that there’s a thin line between love and hate is true. My love for her transformed into hate in the same breath she told me goodbye."
Rozelyn has lived a horrendous life after her meeting Flynn. The things she's endured is beyond what anyone should have to endure. Particularly at the hands of someone who should be protecting her. These two finding each other again is quite by accident but is just exactly what they both need in order to heal.
"Something about finding your other half heals a wounded soul."
Freedom In Captivity is absolutely fantastic. This story will shred your heart and neatly put it back together beautifully by the end. I can't wait for Yasmines story.
“Mon soleil. Ma raison d’être.” "My sun. My reason for being."
If you're a fan of fairytale retellings, I PROMISE you will love this series. Each book keeps the reader entranced as the story unfolds, enveloping us in a world of the mafia. This is the 4th book of the Fractured Ever Afters series and revolves around Rozelyn 'Rapunzel" and Flynn.
The characters are first introduced in previous books of the series, but since these are interconnected standalone, it's not necessary to read them. It's just a perk. Roz is a tough, strong-willed woman with a hard exterior who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. But after a tragic incident and dangerous attack on one of the daughters of the Corsetti family, Roz finds herself captured. But her captor is not just another goon for the Corsetti's...it's Flynn, her forbidden love from the past. Now they find themselves on opposite sides of the mafia war, their families sworn enemies, ready to strike at a moment's notice.
The heat level in this book was SPICY as the passion between the two enemies burned off every page. There was so much hatred between them, but deep down, they cared deeply for one another. There were times when Flynn mistreated Roz in ways that caused me to want to strangle him, but I understand why. He was heartbroken after she left him all those years ago.
The story was filled with intensity, action, suspense, darkness, and spice. Overall, I highly recommend this series and would gladly re-read the entire series again.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
This is the story of Flynn and Rozelyn and i Have to tell you now that it is intense. These two use to be in a relationship until she left and broke his heart. He was angry when this happened too. So very angry. Now time has passed and he is an enforcer in the mafia. He will do whatever he needs to do as an enforcer and not thing twice about. However when his next target come up he is shocked to see it is Rozelyn. I am going to go ahead and tell you that her backstory involving her stepfather will break your heart. When she is captured she is not really sure what is going on but she is for sure shocked to see that the boy she once loved is looking a back at her with such hate in his eyes that it takes her breath. This story is about two damaged characters and one you will not lay down.
I've read other books in this series so I knew the vibe but this one I dnf'd at about the halfway mark for consent issues. You cannot give consent if you're being held captive. It seems like the author tries to justify things because the two characters have had a relationship previously but that is irrelevant...that doesn't change that she is now a captive and cant freely give consent. I stopped reading after the female MC was given a room and she was afraid of what was going to happen next. She saw the male MC (aka the guy who has been holding her prisoner) as this lifeline in uncertainty and then slept together (again) because of it...it gave me the ick. There are other questionable things that happen in this book too but that's what did me in.

B-f*cking-vo!!!! The author has knocked this book out of the park. Definitely the best book I've read by her, and that's saying something. If you are like me and are going into this with expectations, throw them out the window now. I'm honestly stunned that I never saw any of this coming. This book....there are no words that adequately describe it without ruining the journey already traveled, and what's to come next. And that goes for both characters and plot. Just know that from cover to cover you'll experience a rollercoaster of emotions that you won't want to get off. Highly recommend and obviously it's a top read.
While I absolutely loved this story in so many ways, Flynn made this book almost unbearable. I adore Roz and her story broke me in so many ways. I hated her and what she did to Della, but then reading her story. Things that were done to her, ugh my heart! I screamed and cried right along with her. I just couldn't stand Flynn. I feel, even after everything, he didn't deserve her. For all the love he had for her, she was nothing more than a possession. And the way he treated her, even after the truth came out, it was just crappy. But I did love the whole plot! I can't wait to see Ariella and Ericos story. And now Nico is boss! So excited to see what the next steps are!!!
