This is a beautifully laid out catalog of New York City's architecture.

Arranged by style it has a photo (most of the main façade, some are aerials), location, date of construction and architect for each structure profiled. Most structures are buildings, but there are bridges, "The" statue, a parachute jump, a park, a monument, an 8 lane thoroughfare, an elevated railroad and a zoo. There is a paragraph about the structure describing function, significance, or place and line drawings of significant details. At the end of each topical chapter is a map with a pictorial legend clearly showing location.

The selection worked for me. It includes all my favorites (Chrysler, the Flatiron, the Whitney, the NYPL, MoMA). There is info on some structures that had me curious like the Arthur Kill Bridge, the Edward Durrell Stone House and Co-op City.

It has a beautiful layout. With the exception of each chapter's introductory page on grey (hard to read), the layout and organization work for the reader

The book is meaty, but it is not a course. It works best as a catalog or survey, a guide or a reference book.

Está claro que la mejor manera de afrontar esta lectura es precediendo un primer viaje a la gran manzana. Yo deseaba poder aprehender esa primera incursión en la ciudad reconociendo los hitos de ese inmenso bosque de edificios petulantes y gloriosos; y este libro es perfecto para eso.

Está concebido a modo de guía, ordenado de manera cronológica y agrupa los edificios en función de características y estilos, por lo que una lectura lineal facilita la idea de evolución urbana de Nueva York a través del tiempo. Se presta, no obstante, a la consulta salpicada de esos edificios emblemáticos que despierten nuestro interés.

La composición del libro es, cómo se espera en estos casos, sistemática, y se detiene de forma especial en los aspectos formales de los edificios. A un lector europeo le harán gracia ciertas reflexiones del autor, estadounidense, sobre los estilos históricos. En uno y otro extremo del Atlántico estas derivas reinterpretativas de los periodos claves del arte tienen distinta consideración, y se pone de relieve que Nueva York ha sido un fértil territorio para la experimentación arquitectónica. Incluso para el juego y la diversión a través de esta disciplina.

Como decía al principio, magnífico complemento para una guía de viaje. Imprescindible quizá para un amante de Nueva York.

Leí este libro en paralelo con otro para preparar una visita a Nueva York. Pienso que es uno de los mejores libros que se pueden leer para hacer una visita a la Gran Manzana lo más completa posible. Muchas veces (y no solo en Nueva York), solo nos fijamos en los edificios más famosos cuando estamos de turismo, ignorando otros que tienen mucha importancia y que son auténticas joyas arquitectónicas. Con este libro no te pasará, y podrás organizar rutas muy completas y con significado, entendiendo mucho más sobre Nueva York que la mayoría de los visitantes que pasan por ella.

Hay libros ideales a leer en muchas sentadas, mientras, ejem, estás haciendo otra cosa. Este libro es uno de ellos. Cada edificio o urbanización recibe dos páginas o, en casos excepcionales, 4 o 6. Fotos de época, dibujos de detalle, y mapas, un complemento ideal a guías turísticas más convencionales en un formato de bolsillo que recomiendo para cualquier turista o simplemente para recordar o evocar los 5 boroughs de la Gran Manzana.

Great book for tourism. Simple written, clear images. Each chapter covers an architectural style, and gives a brief overview of the style - buildings are further organized by chapters. That gives a clear historical timeline of the New York architectural development.

Small print, easy to carry around, when sightseeing.
