About the author

A former actor, theatre-director and drama teacher, Deary says he began writing when he was 29. Most famously, he is one of the authors of the Horrible Histories series of books popular among children for their disgusting details, gory information and humorous pictures and among adults for getting children interested in history. Books in the series have been widely translated into other languages and imitated.

A cartoon series has been made of the series of books and was shown on CiTV for a period in 2002.

The first series of a live-action comedy sketch show of the same name was shown on CBBC in 2009 and a second series is due.

Terry is also known widely throughout children and adult reading groups alike for his True Stories series (see below for series list).

He received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of Sunderland in 2000. His numerous accolades also include the Blue Peter "Best Nonfiction Author of the Century" Award in the U.K.

در کودکی مجموعه علوم ترسناک را با عشق و علاقه خاصی میخواندم،ترکیب اطلاعات علمی و تاریخی گسترده همراه با طنز فوق العاده قوی کشش بی نهایتی برای من داشت‌.
حالا ۱۵سال بعد در میان کتاب های شخصی که دیگر نیازی به آن ها نداشت این کتاب را یافتم و دریافتم که علاوه بر علوم ترسناک سری تاریخ ترسناکی هم وجود داشته!:)
این‌کتاب که به انقلاب ها میپردازد به طرز شگفت انگیزی گسترده ست و شخصیت ها و رخداد های مهم را به زیبایی و با طنز ناب به تصویر اورده.
سری علوم و تاریخ ترسناک را روزی دوباره خواهم خواند به یاد خاطرات کودکی

سال‌ها پیش وقتی علوم ترسناک رو می‌خوندم،به دلایلی نتونستم مجموعه‌ی تاریخ ترسناک رو بخرم و بخونم.چندوقت پیش چشمم بهشون افتاد و خب گفتم چرا که نه!مگه چه‌قدر می‌تونم پیر شده باشم؟!
کتاب بدی نبود و یک‌سری کلیات تاریخی خوبی داشت و چون اطلاعات تاریخی خوبی ندارم،برام جالب بود.شوخی‌هاش اوایل کتاب به‌نظرم زیاد بامزه نمیومد،اما کم‌کم حس کردم اون‌قدرها هم بد نیستن و جالبن.اگر هنوز ذره‌ای حس می‌کنین که زود بزرگ شدین و فرصت کافی برای خوندن تمام کتاب‌ها رو نداشتین،پیشنهاد می‌کنم امتحانش کنید.

به طور کلی دوستش داشتم. جاهای زیادی هم خنده به لبانم می آورد، اما نه این طور که تمام کتاب در حال خوش گذشتن باشد، در واقع بعضی جاها برایم زیادی طولانی و کمی خسته کننده می شد. البته این مربوط به سبک کتاب نبود فکر می کنم، شاید کتاب های دیگرش که موضوع مشخص تری را دنبال می کنند این مشکل را کمتر داشته باشند، در این کتاب که موضوع از لحاظ زمانی و مکانی خیلی گسترده بود، گاهی خط ربط ماجراها به هم را گم می کردم، یا خط ربطی که نویسنده سعی داشت برقرار کند برایم کافی نبود. به هر حال خوشحالم که خواندمش.

.خوندن این کتاب جالب و سرگرم کننده بود و حال وهواش به حال و هوای این روز ها (مهر و ابان 1401)میخورد

این مجموعه کتاب به طور کلی برای نوجوانان (زیر 14 یا حداکثر 15){البته خودم با 18 سال سن خوندمش😅} که اطلاعات چندانی از تاریخ دنیا ندارن خیلی مفیده چون مباحث تقریبا حوصله سربر تاریخی رو با طنز و کاریکاتور و فکت های جالب(عمدتا پشم ریزان)،سرگرم کننده میکنه و لذت بخش

در چهارده سالگی فکر میکردم این کتاب بی نظیر است و پی در پی جلد های دیگر این مجموعه را خریداری میکردم.
در 16 سالگی فکر میکردم خنده دار است و همچنان از حضورش در کتابخانه لذت میبردم.
در 18 سالگی فکر میکنم باید همان 14 سالگی کامل میخواندم و هدیه اش می دادم.
کتاب های تری دیری را برای یک نوجوان 12 الی 15 ساله توصیه میکنم. و برای خاطرات خوب آن سال ها 4 ستاره از من میگیرد

I fondly remember these books and still enjoy the BBC TV show as my guilty pleasure! I bought two of this series secondhand to give to my old primary school and decided to give them a quick read myself. As always they're a fun and informative read and are as accurate as they can be in a book for kids. I like how since I was a child they've started to include a lot more from histories outside of Europe and the US, meaning I got to learn something too as this wasn't included as much a decade+ ago. If you're thinking about giving this to your kids then 100% go for it! Kid friendly and something they should enjoy.

So, a bit of a different feel this one, but definitely still within the confines of a Horrible Histories book that we all know and love.

This one takes a more in depth look at revolutions throughout history and how these revolutions have come about, the major players in those revolutions and then what happened to them.

It’s definitely more of a broad overview of everything rather than being an in depth look at each and every country and revolution, but as with all Horrible Histories books, it’s a great springboard for a potential future interest in the topic.

And has the added bonus of not being full of facts and stories that you’re already being taught about in school. Win win.

Being a ‘Special’, this was longer than the average Horrible Histories book, which I was pleased to discover.
Plenty of horribleness in this book! The illustrator is not the usual one featured in this series, which is a shame but the illustrations are still good, regardless.
There’s a mix of ancient and modern histories here and not all European, which is good to see.
I wish I had this series to read as a kid but I’m enjoying it as an adult, anyway!

کتاب روایت دوست داشتنی و طنزآمیز از واقعیتهای انقلاب ها در اروپاست. کتاب برای انتهای دوره دبستان و نوجوانان مناسب است و اطلاعات واقعی را بیان می کند و منبعی قابل اعتماد برای نوجوانان و کودکان است.من این کتاب را در کودکی خواندم که شیوه مطرح شدن مطالب در آن برایم دوست داشتنی بود.خواندن سایر کتابهای سری تاریخ ترسناک را هم به خوانندگان این کتاب توصیه می کنم.

Deary assembles anecdotes concerning riot and revolt, rather loosely defined. But he claims the Republicans were "rebels" against "the Spanish government" (there was a reason they are known as "Loyalists"), and that the Paris Commune was fighting "the Emperor". (Napoleon III was unable to "send" anything against anybody, as he was a prisoner of the Germans.) That is HORRIBLY slipshod!

Nie jest tak ciekawa jak inne książki z tej serii, ale naprawdę niezła. Zabrakło mi więcej szczegółów, może faktów, momentami miałam wrażenie, że wątki porzucano zamiast je rozwijać. Żenujące jest to, że mimo wznowienia wydania, nie usunięto z tłumaczenia rasistowskiego określenia.

Buku ini gak sengaja kutemukan di Big Bad Wolf Book Festival di Jakarta kemarin itu. Lucu aja kayaknya, dan temanya tentang revolusi dan rebellion (pemberontakan). Dua hal yang sangat menarik menurutku. Buku ini dengan sangat mudah menyederhanakan perbedaan keduanya, revolusi itu yang berhasil, dan rebellion itu yang gagal. Hahaha.

Buku-buku sejarah lain, memang menyebutkan tentang banyak rebellion yang terjadi, tapi tidak menjelaskan kenapa mereka gagal. Tentu saja biar kita gak belajar dari kegagalan itu dan bikin revolusi sendiri, hahaha. Nah buku ini menyebutkan alasannya, memberikan tips untuk berhasil, bahkan di akhir buku membuat daftar apa saja yang perlu dipersiapkan untuk memulai revolusimu sendiri. Tentu saja dengan cara yang kocak.

Buku ini ditulis untuk anak-anak yang ingin belajar sejarah dengan cara yang lucu. Di dalamnya ada banyak komik strip dengan konten komedi satir tentang berbagai revolusi yang terjadi di dunia. Bahasa yang digunakan pun sangat informal, bahasa inggris dibolak balik seenak kedengerannya. Punya potensi menghancurkan skor readingmu kalau kamu mau tes IELTS sebentar lagi, haha. But it is a good book, afterall.

من باید بگم که این کتابی عالی است که من به آن چهار ستاره دادم
:این کتاب خوب است ولی گاهی
خب کمی خشن که هست مثل داستان اسپارتاکوس و سرنوشتش
گاهی هم جنبه ی طنز دارد
این که میگم بستگی به سن شما دارد ولی گاهی نوشته هایش خسته کننده مشوند
اگر خشن باشد حتما کمی هم بی ادبی مشود
اما با تمام خشونت هاوبی ادبی هاکه البته کم هستند جنبه ی طنز انها راپوشانده است و انها را خنده دار می کند
به همین خاطر این کتاب خیلی کودکانه نیست
ونمی شود گفت که بزرگسالانه است
هرچند که من این کتاب را در ده سالگی خواندم بهتر است که ان فرد نه بچگانه و نه بزرگسالانه فکر کند
به این دلیل این حرف را مزنم چون که این کتاب برای کسانی مفیداست که اگر مثل من یامثل بزرگسالان است با خود بگوید که من

Entertaining overview of the history of revolutions. Quite a bit darker than I think you would ever get from the equivalent as far as an American book for children on this subject. I like to read these to review history and see different perspectives as well as to get a better picture for teaching, etc. Kids like them too.

Best book for readers to get interested in history.Entertaining details about the revolutions and rebellions, cartoons to add both detail and humour, and satisfaction of time well spent is what you get from this book. Light read to break the monotony. I added a lot of jokes inspired by the book to my vocabulary

Horrible Histories is a series of illustrated books published in the UK by Scholastic. They are designed to get children interested in history by concentrating on the trivial, unusual, gory, or unpleasant. They are exceptionally well loved by my history loving children

There is really no better way to get kids interested in history than by giving them a Terry Deary Horrible Histories! I loved these books as a kid and I love to collect them now. Deary's take on history is hilarious and interesting. It may not all be true but you definitely learn something!
