A new book in the Little White Fish series, which has sold over 600,000 copies in twenty countries!
How deep is the sea? Little White Fish is curious. But his friends Little Goldfish, Little Turtle and Octopus warn him: the sea is very deep and very dangerous. Yet Little White Fish wants to know...
An adventurous story about the deep sea for little daredevils ages 2.5 and up
If you're not familiar with Guido Van Genechten's children's series for toddlers "Little White Fish" then you probably haven't had many children in your life in the last decade. The original book has been translated into dozens of languages around the world, won awards and is a best selling board book for children. And so I went into Little White Fish Deep Beneath the Sea with expectations; and with fears. The irony of my fears about this book is that the story is actually about fear! I had no idea going on. My fear wasn't that the book wouldn't be good; and of course it is. But that it would somehow romanticize the dangers of the sea and deep water. I'm terrified (like shudder, cry and run away terrified) of water. Especially deep water, ocean areas and pretty much any creatures that might live in said water. My theory is that humans cannot breathe in water for a reason; it's because we are not meant to be in it! The good news is that I didn't have any issues with this ocean book (lol). And that Genechten doesn't romanticize the dangers of deep water at all. Instead he shows that deep water can be scary. But that we should always ask for help and try to find a friend in scary situations; even if we're super deep under water and afraid. This is a solid addition to this very popular series. With it's simple and clear text, clean black backgrounds with bright illustrations on top, and a good morale for any child to glean. I would definitely recommend Little White Fish Deep Beneath the Sea for any child. It's a good generic children's book that could be easily gifted to any child of any background without concern.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
We have read several Little White Fish stories together, but his one did not interest my older grandson, as there was not much of a story. My granddaughter liked it, because she loved the illustrations. This story has Little White Fish swimming way down into the Deep Sea, despite his friends' warnings. He meets several creatures along the way and there is a bit of a twist at the end. I wasn't sure about the idea that he did not heed warnings about dangers. Cute illustrations, but not a book I would add to our library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
I know I'm not the audience for this. Still, I expect to find some enjoyment in most of the picture books I read. While this has cute illustrations and decent text, it's really lacking in the plot department, to the point where the whole book seems rather pointless.
Little White Fish wants to know how deep the sea is. So he swims down to find out, ignoring the warnings of his friends. He gets to the bottom, meets a fish, and then goes home. There's no moral or message (except maybe to ignore voices of caution, which doesn't seem like a very good message for a children's picture book).
Thank you to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for providing a digital ARC.
I thought this book was really cute and perfect for a baby who's not ready for a story with a full plot. Unfortunately the person who gave this two stars didn't allow comments, so I'm commenting in my review: It's a baby board book! It does not need a fully fleshed-out plot and I'm sorry you weren't the audience for this.
I'm going to read this in storytime and have the kids color with metallic crayons on black paper.
Not the best book in this series, it shows our hero the little white fish being very brave and inquisitive about the depths of the sea – just how deep and dark does it get down there? I'll not spoil the twist, but if you know anything about deep-sea pressure and all that malarkey you'll know it's daft. The drama is fine to be read out, but I don't see this becoming a much-loved volume, unlike the other two of the cycle I've witnessed before now.
It's a cute little story about a little white fish that is curious about what it's like in the deep. He defies the warnings of his friends, who tell him it's not safe to go venturing out that far into the deep. And so of course, he gets lost, but is lucky enough to find a fish to help him find his way back home. It's a quick read and the friendly characters are vibrantly colored. The deep dark sea is quite apparent as the pictures get darker and darker.
I would use this book as a talking point about listening to directions, how to stay safe, and what to do if you get lost, and emphasize that the little white fish was lucky to find a safe helper.
Thank you to the publisher for fulfilling my review request via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I generally like the Little White Fish books. They're very cute. This one was cute too, but the story wasn't as great as the previous stories. The art is still awesome and I think kids would love the book just for the illustrations.
