MY OPINION:

I totally enjoyed reading this one. I had fun with it. Max was murdered and he is unable to move on (he's a ghost) till he can find out what happened to him. So he is hanging around the place where he was killed and he finally meets someone that can hear him. That's all it takes. He is able to annoy this person until he gives in. Joe is the poor soul that can hear Max and that is where the fun begins. Joe is a private detective and he helps Max find what happened to him. But in a goofy, fun-loving way. They even have to put some limits on when Max is allowed to bother Joe. He's never really good at it but Joe needs a break every now and then. They really are pretty good partners and that was a nice treat.

This is a fun ride and I really enjoyed it. I laughed at a lot at Max at him being such a goofy ghost and not even able to get from one place to another. It is a trip. It is a bit sad because, well he's dead but it was funny and you just went along with it. Joe is a good guy and I immediately liked him. I found this a light fun read even though Max passed away and wanted him to take grandpa's hand so many times. =) This was fun for me to read and I would totally recommend it.

I give this book 4 of 5 stars!

I really loved Into The Light. It was a really hmph mix of paranormal and mystery, which is also a good recipe for an entertaining read.

The characters in this novel are so well done. Max Paddington is one unlucky dude. His wife asks for a divorce, and only a short while later, he is shot and killed. Then to top it off, he becomes a ghost who can’t move into the light until he solves his death mystery.

Joe Cavelli is a private investigator who had imaginary friends when he was younger…or were they ghosts? He becomes friends with Max, and the two set out to solve the mystery of Max’s murder.

The unlikely friendship is such an intriguing thing to read about. There’s a ton of character growth as the two become closer and it absolutely made this book a joy to read.

This book was fantastic and I highly recommend checking it out. It is a well crafted mix of paranormal and mystery, with humor, love, and friendship.

Into The Light (Darcia Helle)
Mystery/Comedy/Romance/Drama/Supernatural

Max Paddington, who refuses to go "into the light" until his killer can be brought to justice. Max, was an ordinary man, an assistant manager at a store. He died feeling like a failure as if he did not accomplish anything in life. His marriage was in trouble and that left him heartbroken.

Joe Cavelli is a private investigator, he too had an ordinary life. That is until he connects with Max, like it or not. He finds himself able to hear Max, and he is asked to help him (Max) out. Joe agrees to help Max find his killer and why he was killed.

While Joe is trying to solve the murder, Max is trying to find out what went wrong in his marriage. He can not move on until these questions are answered. He is stuck "in limbo" until he is at ease, only then can he
move forward for all of eternity.

A very enlightening read. It makes me wonder what it is like on "the other side". Darcia has created a unique story, part humorous, mysterious, romantic and dramatic. I could not help feel Max's frustration, his feelings of inadequacy(in life) and death. His awkwardness and clumsiness as a ghost, and the dire need to know why this all happened.

Fast paced, fulfilling read. I am a fan of Darcia Helle, she has(perfectly) stepped outside of her usual genre, and created another Hit. I look forward to more work from this talented author.

What an amazing, fun and original read😊
I loved every word of it. Imagine you're turning into a ghost in a split second and you had to struggle your way through earthly life. Now you're a ghost with even more struggles. It turns out that it is not easy to move around without anyone telling you how to float. At least you can talk to someone who actually hears you. And now the two of you need to figure out why you were killed.

INTO THE LIGHT by Darcia Helle tackles some new ground. If you can believe it, there are ghosts in this one. Oooh. And a trip into a deep dark place called The Abyss. She doesn’t wander from her trademark of believable characters doing things you and I would do in the same circumstances. But the otherworldliness is a welcome tilt on the murder, mayhem and intrigue you’ve come to expect.

I don’t offer plot recaps in my reviews because I despise ruining even one small bit of a story for any reader. But I’ll tell you that Joe and Max in INTO THE LIGHT are like The Odd Couple with a paranormal twist. Their interplay is the heart of the novel and, while moving towards the satisfying conclusion, their banter is the funny, light centerpiece in a book that is actually talking about some very big things. Who are we? What have we done with our lives? Was there meaning in how we lived? In who we loved?

I spent time between reading sessions pondering this for myself. And anytime a book makes me think about my own mortality – or any larger-than-life concept – I must give due credit to its author.

Darcia Helle takes readers on a path that is never straight and narrow. It’s wide and rich, with colour and intensity. You can’t help but fall for her characters along the way and despise others as you witness their true likeness. Her books tread this wondrous path, taking you on their journey. Ms. Helle’s books are always satisfying glimpses into this very human condition of ours. And INTO THE LIGHT is no exception.

This is a wonderful story on so many levels. It contains humour, romance, and an element of mystery. It's a supernatural tale about a ghost, Max, who refuses to go `into the light' until his killer can be brought to justice.
Max, in life, was a very ordinary man, in fact he died feeling like a failure and as if his life had been in vain.
What Helle's book teaches us is that there are many things we do on a daily basis that have an effect on other people's lives, for good or bad. Max is forced to confront issues from his past when he dies, and this multi-layered story perfectly highlights the fact that we are often unaware of other people's thoughts and feelings and that makes all the difference when looking at the effects of things we do. Many readers will be able to relate to Max, and also the private investigator, Joe, who is roped in to help Max find his killer. Their relationship is an odd one, but they each learn something from the other as they both try to come to terms with their problems.
The book deals with the subjects of divorce, regret, relationships, insecurity, and miscommunication, among other things. It's a fun and often comical read, but also contains very deep thinking on human behaviour and relationships.
The underlying message appears to be that when we die we leave behind an imprint based on everything we have done, thought, and said... it's definitely food for thought.

Before starting “Into the Light,” I read a comment by author Darcia Helle stating that the novel was very different from her usual style. I’m a creature of habit. I know what I enjoy, and if you throw a new secret ingredient into the mix I’m probably not going to like it. I’m an adult version of Mikey from the old Life cereal commercial.

As a fan of Ms. Helle’s writing, I truly wanted another Michael Sykora series thriller. I would have gladly accepted another exceptional stand-alone like “The Cutting Edge.” But the author’s comment about writing outside of her genre made me lower my expectations considerably. I’m here to tell you, I was dead wrong.

After reading the book I felt like a Beatles fan hoping for another “Rubber Soul” or “Revolution” and getting “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” “Into the Light” is absolutely terrific. It grabbed me on an emotional level that I don’t equate to reading. I found myself relating to Max and Joe like they were personal friends instead of fictional characters.

While the storyline may not fit neatly into any genre definition, there is no mistaking the quality of this novel. I suggest you read it on a day when your spirits need a lift. Don’t be surprised if it continues to delight you weeks after you’ve turned the final page.

All I can say is Darcia Helle's novel " Into the Light" was amazing. Our mutual friend Carol, lent me the book, and I am so happy that I read it.This novel is very different from her usual style, and I really enjoyed it.

Max Paddington, who refuses to go "into the light" until his killer can be brought to justice. Max, was an ordinary man, an assistant manager at a store. He died feeling like a failure as if he did not accomplish anything in life. The novel opens with Max's wife, Rachel, handing him his morning coffee and toast and tells him she wants a divorce. That sets the tone and the day doesn't get any better for Max.Max spends the day sulking and at the end of the day he decides to go to a restaurant "Chili's", until his wife gets home from work. But he is shot in the parking lot.

He is stuck "in limbo" until he is at ease, only then can he move forward for all of eternity.

Into the light is absolutely terrific. It grabbed me on an emotional level that I don't equate to reading.I found myself relating to Max and Joe like they were my personal friends.

Thanks Darcia...and keep on writing and surprising us.

This was a quirky and entertaining novel. What I like about it are the subtle life lessons it contains. There are interesting insights into what people might say about you after you've died. There are also the regrets Max had as he thought about the things he had left undone and the words he had left unsaid. Yet he was shocked at the impact of one single act of kindness. There are also several subtle commentaries on society, such as hiring a nanny instead of knowing neighbors well enough to leave children with them.

I liked this quirky novel. I didn't agree with the ultimate spiritual lesson it included but I do recommend it as an entertaining and thought provoking novel. It will make you think about what you need to do in the days you have left before that light appears to take you away.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Into the Light is a book that surprised me. I couldn't give it a category in the books I have read. It's mystery, yes... Who killed Max and why? It's a ghost story ... Max refuses to go into the light until he finds out who killed him and why and PI is the only one who can hear ghosts ...so guess who is the one communicating with the ghost. It is a story about the hereafter ... what lies beyond? Do we get a chance go into the light? What's it like out there? It's a story about truth ... Initially Max believes that his murder was a hit arranged by his wife because he bought himself golf clubs. Oh yes and it's definitely humorous! It's a story about fate ... Max was definitely murdered. And it's a story about lessons learned. What have we done in our lives that has helped others? Joe helps ghost Max, but there is no one who pays him for his time and work. Maybe Joe has done more good than he has realized. Maybe Joe's life wasn't so horrible as he had thought as he looked back at his life.

What made this book stand out for me was that it made me ask questions about my own life, where it is going, what I am doing. It affected me on such a profound level that after I finished it last night, I ended up dreaming about my own life and the hereafter and living in the present moment.
This book is different from anything I have read before. It can be read on so many levels: for entertainment, as a ghost story, a mystery, a humorous story, a story which we can read objectively and get much meaning from it, or one that calls us to dig deeper and explore our own philosophy

Into The Light captured my interst right from the first sentence. It is a very enlightening read. Max Paddington refuses to go into the light until his killer is brought to justice. Max was an assistant manager at a store. He was just an ordinary man who died feeling like he didn,t accomplish anything in his life. He had a troubled marraige and was very heart broken about it.Joe Cavelli is a p.i he also leads an ordinary life. Until like it or not he connects with Max, He can hear Max and he is asked to help him. Joe agrees to help Max find out why he was killed and who the murderer was. While Joe is tryng to find out who killed Max and why? Max is trying to find out what went wrong in his marriage.Max is stuck in limbo until he can find out the answers to these questions and put his mind at ease so he can move forward into eternity. I,m a big fan of Darcia, books and in this one she has created a very unique story, mysterious, humourous , dramatic and romantic. Very fast paced an enjoyable read. With this book i feel she has stepped out of her usual genre. Max, a married man in a meanial job, who at 42 years old is still "Assistant" Manager and not "Manager" as he had hoped he would be by the time he was 30. Max and his wife, who have always wanted children was told his sperm count is low and he has slow swimmers to boot! Feeling his life is pretty much a failure, his wife of fifteen years offers him his breakfast of toast and coffee and a request, "I want a divorce". Then that day after work he is is shot and killed as he is leaving a restaurant, but he refuses to go to the light as he believes his wife has either killed him or had him killed. Now he must find someone 'of the living' who he can communicate with. In comes Joe Cavelli, a Priviate Investigator who can hear Max but cannot see him. Now, the search begins as well as a "human/ghost" bond.

This book had me smiling, laughing out loud and in tears. The flow of emotions in this book made it a truly remarkable story - one anyone would love.

Not once have I been disappointed in any of Darcia Helle's book and 'Into the Light' was certainly no exception. Wow!! A must read!

A tearjerker but hilarious as well!
This paranormal story by Darcia Helle was an utter treat and not at all what you would expect. A man is murdered by an unknown person and refuses to go into the light as he's hellbent to find his killer. In the process, he haunts a stranger, the only person who can hear him, but the stranger's not exactly happy about it. This is a tantalizing premise as it is and you would expect all the funny episodes and suspense that would logically go with it. Yet, this story is not just about that. Both the ghost and the stranger have their own issues that are related to the women they love. And this is where this story excels. The bonding between the two guys is wonderful and deeply moving as they work with these issues in this page-turner of a book, and while they also unravel the mystery of the obscure killer. Helle tells the story masterfully with believable responses from her characters, vivid scenes and superb dialogue. I highly recommend this book. It certainly made me want to read more from this author and I definitely will!

Funny. Touching. Thoughtful.
This story brings many things to mind:

- How do our lives touch others?
- What effect, if any, do we have on others as we stumble through life?
- How do our actions affect others?
- What do we leave behind?

Darcia Helle tells a warm story of acceptance, love, friendship, forgiveness and lasting influences.
I found this story interestingly told and very amusing and touching to read. Max’s path to understanding and acceptance is a fun story to read.

I'm not sure what I was expecting with this book.... but it wasn't what I got! There were some points where I was bored out of my mind & almost put it down... and then it would drag me right back in. In the end - I was forced to finish - only b/c I read most of the book before I realized that it was just "eehhhh??"

Thoroughly enjoyed this supernatural tale! This is my first time reading this author, but it won’t be my last!

Maxwell Paddington sucks at life. He’s teased and bullied as a kid, passed over for promotions several times as an adult, and his wife, Rachel, wants a divorce.

Then he’s murdered outside Chili’s.

Max is incredulous he’s now a ghost. Who wouldn’t be?

Convinced Rachel had him killed because he bought an expensive set of golf clubs, Max can’t prove it because no one can see or hear him until he encounters private investigator Joe Cavelli in Chili’s parking lot.

When a forgotten secret from Joe’s childhood is revealed, this unlikely duo forms a reluctant partnership to find out who killed Max and why.

Into the Light is appropriately titled, and not just for the bright light at the end of life—even though Max’s grandpa and a host of familiar… and not so familiar deceased people all try to coax Max into the light—but because of the enlightenment both men receive as Joe interviews people from Max’s life.

Alive and dead, both men, so entrenched in their own convictions about people and life, come to realize living life in a vacuum isn’t living at all. Focusing on life will make you miss the moments that make up life.

Moments like: when Max meets a homeless man he once helped; when Joe meets Max’s parents; when Max is confronted by his deceased favorite aunt, and when Joe talks to Rachel. (Warning: Have tissues close by!)

Stellar writing makes this read a page-turner not so much to find out whodunit, but who said it, because whether it’s a snarky moment or emotions running high, the banter between Joe and Max is perfect. The men see a little of themselves in each other. Max takes it to heart, but Joe is a lot more stubborn… and heartbroken.

When the killer and his motive are revealed, Max isn’t as happy as he should be… because he still has unfinished business.

Into the Light is also one of those books that will linger long after it’s finished. It will lead you to consider if you’re consumed with the shoulda-coulda-wouldas of life or enjoying what you have with a heart of gratitude.

With its relatable characters and satisfying ending, I give Into the Light my highest recommendation. Download this one today!

Enjoy!

Max Paddington is a regular guy with a streak of bad luck. He doesn’t feel like he really has accomplished anything then finds out that his wife wants a divorce. If that wasn’t bad enough he then finds himself murdered. Now he can’t cross over until he finds the murderer and figures out somethings from his life. But things are not going well for him. He didn’t stand out in life and now that he is dead he can’t even begin to figure out the who and why he was killed.

Joe Cavelli is a private investigator that happens to hear Max. Joe decides to help Max figure out who killed him. Joe starts digging around for the murderer. At the same time Max is trying to figure out what went wrong with his life. This is also something he has to get straightened out if he is going to cross over.

This is a great story. You have two ordinary guys that have a powerful message. Joe has always had imaginary friends, or did he? I loved how well he works with Max. They bicker and are an odd couple but they work together well. The mystery had me guessing the whole time.

But the part that really got me was Max. He didn’t think he accomplished anything in life and couldn’t figure out where his marriage went south. This retrospect really shows you have little things can make such a big difference in our lives along with affecting others. This part of the story almost had me in tears.

This is an amazing paranormal mystery that has such a strong message. I can’t believe this is the first book from Darcia Helle that I have read. She is a killer author and now I’m hooked. I can’t wait to read more from her.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

OK so I am now officially a Darcia Helle fan! And this is only my second book. I absolutely can't wait to read more. This book was so much fun to read!

First off, I love ghost stories! And holy cow, this was one of the best and definitely the most fun! One minute I was crying and the next I was laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face so I couldn't see to read. At one part I was laughing out loud for a solid 10 min, my husband was so annoyed he threatened to leave the room because I was bothering him! He is such a Kiljoy! But, I did tell him that if I can find this in audio (Darcia - is it in audio?) I was going to get it for him.

Max started out as a real jerk and I couldn't stand him. Really there was no liking him at all. Then... well he became a ghost! And, he actually became more "human" emotionally anyway. And he was freaking hilarious! So, I hate to say it but I did fall in love with him!

What a great fun read! If you are a fan of ghost stories, the fun kind not the dark scary kind - you will LOVE this!

I also read "The Cutting Edge" by Darcia and loved that one as well. I haven't done a review for it yet, but I will. I just love her style of writing. It is snarky, quirky, and so much fun, but her books are also very suspenseful! So a great combo!

I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Partners in Crime Tours - Thank You!!

Wow. Talk about a genre range! In the first book of hers that I read, Darcia Helle pulled me through the ringer in Miami Snow with that high tension relationship. But with 'Into The Light' she TOTALLY switched gears, and pulled it off beautifully. This is a humorous and sad chronicle of a character (Max) who thinks so little of himself, but who actually has had more of an impact on people's lives than he thought. Just because he's now dead doesn't mean that it's going to stop. In order to find peace, he needs help from Joe, a private investigator. Joe has more patience with Max's ghost than Job would have. Then again, maybe Max isn't the only one who needs help.

So, did I have any issues with anything in the book? I always have issues with every book, from every author, but this one has incredibly few. I don't like listing them because then you are watching for them to pop up instead of enjoying the read. You might not agree with me, either, and then I've wrecked the experience for you, which isn't fair. The issues that I had were minor, and few. Otherwise I wouldn't have given it five stars. Like Miami Snow, it was too good for a four, and just under a five.

Darcia Helle is a darn good writer who I'll happily continue to follow, read and recommend!

Max is murdered and won't go to the afterlife until he finds out who murdered him and why. He enlists the help of Detective & Ghost Whisperer Joe and along the way Max not only finds out the details of his murder, but also learns that he had a special job that needed to be accomplished. This is the first book that I have read by Ms. Helle and it was a delight to read. It was a very well written book with a great story line and well developed characters. It kept me engaged from the beginning, and if time had permitted, I would have read it in one sitting. I liked the interplay between Max & Joe and the sensitivity and thoughtfulness of Joe as he related Max's messages to various loved ones and acquaintances. I hope that there are more Detective Joe ghost whisperer stories to read.

This is the story of Max, recently deceased but unable to move on until he finds who killed him and Joe, a private detective who had the ability to hear Max's ghost. What develops is a wholly fun, imaginative, and smart story about life, hopes, disappointments, friendship and ultimately love. I often found myself chuckling out loud and occasionally shedding a tear at this wonderfully written story. The relationship between Max and Joe is just delightful. Although encompassing the paranormal, I found this to be very real and thoughtful. Although lighthearted, I found myself pondering the question of "have I done all that I could in this life?" and I dare say, I hope I can go into the unknown as gracefully as Max.This is a very quick read that I loved and can't recommend highly enough!

Darcie Helle has written a touching goodread about a self centered ghost not being able to pass ‘Into the Light’. I found her writing imaginative with under lying meanings for the ghost, Max, and Joe, that kept me reading each time Max could not follow into the light. This story could give readers insight into their own lives to make changes for better living before it’s too late.

Going by the title of this book, the story is not what I expected. I loved the humor. Poor Max..his heart is in the right place...but he has so much trouble with coordination.

This is a lite story, but you also start thinking of the "hereafter" and what happens after we pass on.

A very enjoyable book.

This was SUCH A GOOD STORY!

I'd love to see this made into a movie or even a tv series if we can keep Max from going into the light! Loved the characters, Mac's crazy attempts at mobility, & would highly recommend this book for everybody. That's how much I loved it!

Into The Light is a fun lighthearted paranormal mystery about a man named Max who is murdered and refuses to go "into the light". Into the Light by Darcia Helle is such a good book. It's a ghost story, it's a mystery, it's a story about love and friendship, it's humorous, it's touching. That's a lot for a book to be, but Into The Light is all that and more.

Max Paddington is having a bad day, a bad life and a bad afterlife. On the day his wife asks him for a divorce, he's shot and killed, much to his surprise. Even more surprising, he's become a ghost and can't move Into The Light until he finds out why he was killed and who killed him. He's convinced that his wife wants a divorce because he bought an expensive set of golf clubs that he couldn't afford. He's also convinced that either his wife killed him or hired some one to do the killing. The problem is, he doesn't know how to get the answers he seeks. He also doesn't know how to move about in the spirit world or how to communicate with anyone. He sure wishes being dead came with an instruction booklet.

Joe Cavelli is a private investigator, who as a youngster, had imaginary friends. Were they imaginary friends or ghosts? When Joe hears someone yelling at him but doesn't see any one, he knows that ghosts are a part of his life. After Max convinces Joe to help him look into his murder and find his killer, the two form an unlikely friendship and set out to solving the mystery. What follows is, at times, a humorous escapade following leads and pursuit of the bad guy.

The characters are well developed and realistic. Yes, I know, how can a ghost be realistic? While I was reading, I kept thinking, yeah, that might be something I would do. Max has so many human traits that you could easily forget he's a ghost. The friendship formed between Max and Joe seems very real, and it helps them both to grow. They help each other is ways neither knew they needed help with. Their friendship continued to grow throughout the entire book.

The mystery of the killer and the motive are carried out throughout the entire book. The reason for the shooting came as a surprise to me and I thought it was a great twist. And as I was reading, I found myself not even caring the who or the why. I was too busy enjoying the banter of the two main characters, seeing how they helped each other. There were times, while reading, that I would laugh out loud. At other times, I had tears in my eyes. Being able to take readers through these extremely opposite emotions makes for a good book. And I think it takes an excellent author to do that.

I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who like a ghost story or enjoys a well crafted mystery. And if you love a book that takes you through many different emotions, then this book is for you. This is the first book I've read by Darcia Helle but it most definitely won't be my last. I have my fingers crossed that this will be the first in a series starring Max and Joe.

All I want to know is why this author in not yet on the “bestseller” list. This is the second book I have read by Darcia Helle, and all I can say is that I was once again delighted that her story was a real page-turner. “Into the Light” is a paranormal mystery/thriller that will keep the reader wondering what is going to happen next.

In my opinion, the character development is exceptional, and we get to piece together the personality and little quirks of each character bit by bit, while the story unfolds beautifully.

Being an author myself, I have to say that we can be the worst critics when it comes to reviewing a book because not only do we look at character and plot development, but we also look at grammar, tense and a whole host of other things. We can get very picky at times; so I am pleased to say that I didn’t have a moment’s hesitation about this author’s writing style. I knew that even if the story wasn’t right up my alley, I would still enjoy a good read. In the end, however, I enjoyed the story immensely.

When I leave a review, I don’t normally go into the actual story and reveal the plot. All I do is comment on what I’ve learned or felt from reading the book. In this instance, I have to say that I was not only entertained, but I tried to see if I could solve the mystery (which I didn’t), and so it was great when all was revealed by the author as the story unfolded very cleverly. Additionally, the story is one of inspiration and it shows the reader how we see things from a different perspective, relative to where we are—that is, on Earth or in the spirit world.

In conclusion, I have only one word to describe this novel: EXCELLENT!
