Some kangaroos help some koalas find a new food source when a plague of grasshoppers ruins their gum tree grove. When they discover a crashed plane full of circus supplies, the bears decide to repay the kangaroos by putting on a show.
The story is a little slow, but the wonderful pictures make it work, and there is a little excitement at the end to send things out with a bang.
As the back flap admits, this is basically a vehicle for adorable art. Who doesn't like pretty pictures of koalas performing a circus? I would have loved this passionately when I was a child and may even have overlooked the story about friendship and perseverance. I guess I'm awfully jaded now, because I just can't bear to give it the fourth star....
Phenomenal pictures that I pored over as a child and remember in detail along with a quote and associated image that is burned into my brain: "They're back. The grasshoppers are back." Great story about friendship and community. One of my very favorite basement books*.
* When I was very young I believe my parents got a subscription to Parents Press Magazine books. They also got books from other sources. A key memory of childhood for me is the many children's picture books kept on the built-in shelves in our basement. Recently I put together a list of the ones I could find online and remember: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... My amazing husband found many of the physical books as a Christmas gift for me, so I am now seeing and re-reading the physical books for the first time in over twenty years. Be aware that most if not all of them will get an extra star from me for the incredible nostalgia.
