In the nightmare future of the forty-first millennium, mankind teeters upon the brink of extinction. The galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man is beset on all sides by ravening aliens, and threatened from within by malevolent creatures and heretic rebels. Only the strength of the Immortal Emperor of Terra stands between Humanity and its annihilation. Dedicated to His service are the countless warriors, agents and myriad servants of the Imperium. Foremost amongst them stand the Space Marines, mentally and physically engineered to be the supreme fighting force, the ultimate protectors of Mankind. Wars rage over airless moons, in the dark, twisted depths of hive worlds and in the cold wastes between stars. From the immaterial realm of warp space, malicious entities send their unspeakable minions to slaughter the Emperor's chosen. Everywhere, soulless spectres and slavering monsters are poised to extinguish the life of humanity.
There is no time for peace. No respite. No forgiveness. There is only WAR.

My introduction to Warhammer 40,000. Like many others I picked up Space Marines but unlike many others I still love them and play them. The good points about this book is how it is absolutely packed with information. About the game, rules, hobby tips and background information on the Empire of man. As far as the actual rules I found them to be a vast improvement on 2ed but they had flaws that in the coming years had to be patched and in the early 2000 this meant picking up printed supplements. not ideal in any time. My copy is now read so much its falling apart (another flaw is the glued spine of this paperback edition.) but ill always love it despite getting me into a hobby whose cost is about a mortgage.
A outdated but still entertaining rulebook for Warhammer 40k 3rd edition. A bit of a nostaglia kick for me, as a child I briefly dabbled in this edition.
There is plenty of interesting lore and army lists for each of the factions. There are plenty of lovely colour photos showing the models in their full glory.
Overall, a terrific rulebook, but definitely more useful as a Nostalgia trip then a rulebook as it is twenty years old.
