A thoroughly documented but highly readable biography of Zionist leader Jabotinsky (1880-1940), organizer of the Haganah self-defense force in Palestine in 1920, highest authority in the breakaway Irgun underground created in 1931 and political opponent of Chaim Weizmann and Ben Gurion. Includes 32 glossy pages of photographs. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
This is a brick - 850 pages, but that is the price to pay to follow Jabotinsly's incredibly active lifetime effort to bolster the Zionist cause - at least until 1922. A literary giant in his own right, he could easily have rivalled Russian great authors, but his destiny was to devote his considerable talents in the service of another cause.
Fluent in 7 languages, he was the man Zionism needed to sow the seeds of the future Israeli state. Where would Israel be - would it even exist - without his Jewish Legion, the first instance of a Jewish army in 2,000 years?
There are 57 streets in Israel which bear his name. Probably not enough.
Not just a good biography of Jabotinsky, but also a good history of Revisionism and about the relationship between the British and the Zionists during the British mandate period
