"Jagger creates an exciting blend of police procedural and legal thriller that recalls the early works of Scott Turow and Lisa Scottoline.“― Library Journal Newly licensed attorney Aspen Wilde joins Denver's largest law firm to discover that an attractive, up-and-coming associate mysteriously vanished several months earlier and is presumed dead. She secretly embarks upon a brilliant but dangerous plan to trap the killer, only to find herself increasingly intertwined in a complex web of murders involving several different women killed in very different ways.
As she frantically searches for answers, not only to trap the killer but also to keep herself from getting trapped, her hunt collides with the ongoing investigation of Denver homicide detective Nick Teffinger, a man who has strayed into the edgy world of a beautiful suspect to find out if she is a murderer, a target, or something else altogether.
With the stakes suddenly higher than they could have imagined, Aspen and Teffinger find themselves spiraling deeper and deeper into a deadly vortex where nothing is as it seems and time is running out.
Don’t abandon this one, give it a chance Narrator John McLain kept me hooked; I almost gave up after the confusing start of this book. However, McLain’s Clint Eastwood vocal style kept me engaged. Add this to the fact that this was an Audible Plus choice and free. As he continued, things started to slowly fall into place. McLain has a perfectly addictive vocal tone and ability that kept me listening, I found the ending slightly disappointing but maybe that was just me. Thank you to all involved for making this audiobook available! I ❤️ Audible!
I will admit that I was taken aback by how much I liked this book. It was one of Audible's free selections which had been sitting around in my library for quite awhile. I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. There was some seriously messed-up sh## going on in this story. The bad guy was a horrible person...except for when he wasn't. Not sure how such an evil person also provided comic relief at times throughout the story, as well as a few heartwarming moments, before going right back to being a total a**hole! A very well-written character, in my opinion. As for the lead character, Detective Teffinger, he was a huge disappointment. Anyone who knows a little about police work knows that he screwed up royally in the investigation. I got very frustrated with him, especially for two main idiotic reasons: first, don't get romantically involved with someone who is a person of interest in the case, and secondly, don't share confidential information about the ongoing investigation with that romantic interest, or with a young, snoopy attorney, or anyone else other than your colleagues on the force! For crying out loud, he annoyed me. (And do you think there were enough references to his love of coffee, or should there have been 100 more?) On to the young, snoopy attorney- she wasn't a very credible character, either. Since when do new attorneys, with less than a week on the job, run around their huge law firm, sneaking into people's offices and desk drawers, checking the firm's time sheets, and investigating during work hours? When do new attorneys take an hour every day for lunch? Or get called out for such offenses within the first week, storm out angrily and then get begged to return to their job? Sorry, not at all realistic. Like Teffinger, she went around sharing confidential information to the investigation, in spite of being warned not to. In spite of my issues with two of the main characters, I found the mystery to have an excellent, suspenseful storyline and was quite creepy at times. I did enjoy it very much, although I HATED the ending. I really want to rewrite that ending! Finally, kudos to the narrator for doing such a fantastic job with all of the voices - especially Draven's, the baddest-bad guy.
Implausible plot ridiculous twists Salacious - sexual situations/descriptions with the vocabulary of horny middle school boys I will not be reading anything else by this author.
This one is just as fast paced as the others. Teffinger is a Denver detective who keeps finding serial killers. The story is told through Teffinger's vantage point as well as through the eyes of a young lawyer and the eyes of a fiendish killer. It is nonstop live action from cover to cover except when Teffinger runs low on coffee. Highly recommend this book as a police thriller.
This book is so messed up. One day I could barely stop listening to it and the next, I had to stop because my brain was saying “this guy is sick” and my only complaint is at the end. Really we just see Gretchen running off and that’s it? Not to mention the whole time who was behind it and now they end up together? Ugh.
As much as I enjoyed the storyline in this book and the voice of the author, I could never suggest it to anyone (and will never read it again) because it is so sexual. The actual story itself gets 4 stars for me; the sexuality in the book gets 1. I do not recommend this book.
Was ok, started out thinking it was going to be fresh and different (compared to most crime novels that I read). In the end it was not that good but passable and worth reading.
It's ok It was nice to read a lawyer story and it was ok. The twists and turns got a bit confusing at times, and the end felt too rushed. Overall it was not a waste of time
This book gave a few too many gratuitous details. I have some pictures in my mind I can’t erase, but wish I could. The story would have been better without them.
Aspen is a newly graduated lawyer newly hired at a successful Denver office. She worked at the office the previous year as a summer intern but when she goes up to the office to visit the lawyer she met during that summer, Rachel Ringer, she finds another woman behind the desk. She discovers Rachel disappeared 5 months previously. Aspen decides to do a little investigating on her own and when a fellow lawyer, Christine befriends her, they join forces. Teffinger, a homicide detective is investigating the case. A body is found but it is not Rachel Ringer. Draven is a man who finds women for other men to kill in whichever way they decide. He finds them, drugs them, takes them to a predesignated place then comes back to clean up the area. We follow his actions throughout the book. A wealthy woman, Davica is a suspect in the first murder and Teffinger is immediately attracted to her. The book deftly moves from chapter to chapter between the characters.
I don't like this book. Probably just the style of writing. I have to get enthused about a book from the first page. After the second time (maybe third time) trying to read this, I am giving up. So, I'm finished with it.
Fast paced legal drama/police procedural. A somewhat predictable ending but with a twist. I would recommend if you have an afternoon to kill. An enjoyable read!
