Verse by Verse, the Book of Mormon is a two-volume, user-friendly commentary that balances doctrinal commentary with quotations from General Authorities, cultural and linguistic insights, and thorough but intelligible helps for understanding difficult scriptural passages. Informational sidebars also provide new glimpses into topics such as angels who ve come to earth; names and titles of God; the Holy Ghost; moral cleanliness; how prophets testify of Christ; the importance of record keeping; Book of Mormon teachings about war; what it means to be a covenant people; and the love of God. The authors have created a valuable resource for students of the scriptures, young and old alike.
This is the first time I've read a commentary concurrent with reading the Book of Mormon. I found this an enriching experience, especially when quotes from prophets and apostles related to the verses I was reading were included. It helped me to ponder on the words and messages I was reading. Highly recommend.
Covering Alma 30 through the end of the Book of Mormon, Verse by Verse: The Book of Mormon, Vol. Two is an excellent addition to scripture study time. While it doesn’t actually cover every verse, it does cover most and includes lots of insights, background information, and references to aid in understanding the reading. I highly recommend it!
This book, like all of Kelly Ogden's other books is fantastic! I found it to be the perfect companion to my study of the Book of Mormon. Dr. Ogden emphasizes throughout his book the powerful teachings from Christ, through his new world prophets, that are brought to life on every page. As I finished reading the Book of Mormon and this book, it hit me like never before that the addition to the title of the Book of Mormon, "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" could not be more appropriate and accurate. As what I believe to be a perfect example of what I am saying, I would like to quote from Moroni 10: 31, 32: "Yea, come unto Christ, and be be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God. And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.
That is some beautiful and powerful doctrine. I testify that the Book of Mormon contains true teachings of Christ, and with all my heart, I sincerely encourage you to read it.
I really enjoyed reading this alongside the Book Of Mormon. I felt like it added some great insights. I liked this quote (among many others), "The burden of proof that there is no God rests with those who claim there is no God. No one in earth's history has proven there is no God, whereas millions have gained a witness that he lives--some with direct personal contact with Him."
