I am the first born and only girl in my family, and six and nine years separate me and my two brothers. Needless to say, I was alone quite a bit. But being alone gave me plenty of time to indulge my imagination in the world of books. One of the first novels I read was a young adult series that traced the lives of two teenagers in high school, Sweet Valley High. Reading those novels I thought I could do better, and so my quest to write entertaining stories began.

Being an introvert, it took me a long time to feel comfortable enough to let others read my work. How long? Well, the first person to read a story I wrote was my husband. Since then, I’ve been writing professionally for almost nine years now. But it was my daughter who encouraged me to write a book for teens—just one of the reasons I love her so dearly.

I live in Maryland with my husband and three children. If you take away the opinionated teenagers, family drama, overflowing bookshelves and DVDs, my life is pretty boring. But don’t take those things away, since they’re my inspiration.

Word to the wise: you might want to read the first three books of this respective series to get a more complete idea of the world, conflicts, and characters in the "Mystyx" series. This particular book definitely does not stand alone. I'm jumping into this series blind after quite some time, but I have to say that even considering this is my introduction to the series as well as Artist Arthur's work, it was a pleasant read and one that engaged me for the most part in the realm of YA paranormal/supernatural fiction.

For one, I liked the style of the narrative that Arthur employs with Lindsey Yi's voice. She sounds like a typical teenager, though I'll admit even with some of the very detailed senses that Lindsey describes, it does feel - for a good part of the beginning narrative, that things are being told to the reader. In some ways, I understood it though, because for people like me who are catching up with the series - it was helpful to have something of a recap of things and establishment of the character. I felt for her as she explains the tragic loss of her parents and her struggles to move on with that, but also how she introduces her role as a part of the Mystyx and her powers as an telepath/empath. The story revolves around Lindsey meeting a boy named Dylan who takes an interest in her. There are also mysterious occurrences that the Mystyx have to deal with that threaten to shatter their worlds.

I didn't expect this book to have the level of action and losses it had, but even with a mild introduction to the characters here, the conflicts were intense. There are losses that hit the group hard, and the level of magic and internal/external conflict was well done in the context of the story. I'm not going to spoil events for those who haven't read this book or the series, but I really liked the ride this book took me on and would recommend it. I would also like to read more in this respective series in the future. My perspective of this novel may change once I start the series from the beginning, but for what its worth, I liked what it had to offer at this point.

Overall score: 3/5 stars.

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Harlequin/Kimani TRU.

Lindsey has a nightmare about the accident that killed her parents. On the train, she remembers seeing a cute boy and two girls holding hands. When Lindsey awakens, she thinks of the cute boy she’s seen in her dreams. She sees him while she’s in the shower, but she’s back on the train and he’s there. She also sees two girls (holding hands). They’re smiling which Lindsey doesn’t like. Then she comes to and Mrs. Handson her guardian is bitching about the water bill. Lindsey feels a presence on the way to school. Lindsey is wearing yellow this day hoping it’ll make her feel optimistic. Not working. But then on to the bus steps Dylan Murphy (the boy from Lindsey’s dream).

Lindsey thinks of Dylan all throughout first period. He taps her on shoulder and he motions that he’s written her a note. The note simply says “Hello.” Lindsey responds back. They have a little awkward conversation after class He says they can talk after football and cheerleading practice. Lindsey isn’t sure if she likes how self-assured he is. Lindsey sees something else in the note. It says I like your smile and that makes her forget her earlier thought. Lindsey realizes that she can’t hear Dylan’s thoughts. Strange! At lunch, all the Mystix (and Twon) discuss what to do about Carron, but don’t come up with anything. After practice, Lindsey misses the bus and has to walk home, but Dylan pulls up and offers her a ride. He then offers to take her to school the next day.

Late, Lindsey walks in a daze in the night to something that’s calling to her. Something wraps itself around her ankle and turns her over. Then she smells fire. Something yanks her up and begins to carry her quickly through the forest. A roar is heard. She hears chanting (Dark as night. Large as fright. Take away this beast tonight). Lightning and fire hits. Lindsey hears Krystal’s voice. She tells her to think of her power. Think of their powers combined. A raspy voice chantes. Feel. Think. Feel. Think. Lindsey thinks painful thoughts and there’s a burst of light. When she opens her eyes, she’s back but Krystal and Sasha are there (in their pjs). Krystal had a vision and she and Sasha came right over. Mrs, Hampton reveals not only does she know about Lindsey, she’s an empathetic (as well as telepathic). She gives them all rocks from the guardian's river. She said they passed the test. They’re rocks from the river Styx. She won’t reveal any of the other guardians. She just says they have what they need now and leaves.

There’s a fire drill and the Mystix notice it’s a real fire (at school the next day). They realize who's causing it (Charron). Lindsey gets overwhelmed with all the panic and thoughts and collapses. The smoke comes at them and they (and all the other kids) run. Lindsey notices the smoke has formed a face with fangs and red eyes. The fireman tries to put out the smoke with their hoses. It reaches out for the Mystix (for Lindsey). She stumbles and falls but Dillion yanks her to her feet and pulls her away. He says the fireman have it under control. It was a “grease fire”. Jake doesn’t think so and neither do the others. The cops question Lindsey put she just tells them she was with the rest of the kids and saw the smoke outside. The cop asks her name and she tells him (not thinking anything of it). But she knows he’s not sure what to make of her.

Mrs. Hampton tells her she should stay in. He wants her soul. She can read minds and he can use that power. But Lindsey refuses to be intimidated, Lindsey says if it wants her soul it’ll just have to kill her so all she has to do is stay alive. She tells her she doesn’t like Dylan. She doesn’t have a good feeling about him. She tells him to keep her stones close and her mind alert. Lindsey notices Dylan doesn’t pick her up in front of the house. He waits down the hill. (They’ve all decided to use the early dismissal to go to the pool. Lindsey notices two girls at the pool and then later when they all go out to eat (that give her a weird feeling).

Lindsey later questions Dylan about her friends and he says they're just not his kind of friends. She asks him about Trends (which they discussed going to under the guise of the girls having a sleepover) and he says he will be there. After Jake leaves, Lindsey’s mom flashes back to the hospital after the accident. She thinks of how the doctors told her she was okay, but her parents were dead. Then her mind flashes to the funeral. She thinks of her guardian telling her everything happens for a reason. Then she thinks of the first time she saw Dylan in a dream.

At school Lindsey comes across some girls (twins) that aren’t happy that she’s dating Dylan. One of them tells her to go find one of her own kind (Ivy and Isis). The other girls seem impressed tho and try to get all in Lindsey’s business wanting to know how he kisses. Lindsey rides home with Dylan again and tries to put the twins out of her mind. While on their first date, Lindsey feels darkness in the Panda Kitchen. Then she sees a boy in the back at a table. It’s Charron. Lidney looks up and Dylan is gone. The boy is gone too. When she sees Dylan he tells the paramedics are there. There was a fire in the kitchen and she inhaled a lot of smoke. The paramedics then take Lindsey to the hospital.

The others show up because again Sasha has a vision. Dylan tries to rush them off, but Sasha tells him its funny she’s been through so much when he’s around. Mrs. Hampton then shows up and sends them all home. Later she tells her to let go of her guilt. It holds her hostage. Only then will she be able to defeat him. (The guilt that is of being the only one that survived the accident). It links her to death and misery and that fuels the demon. Before they go to Trends, Sasha expresses her suspicions about Dylan’s sudden interest in Lindsey. But she’s stressing about Twon wanting them to go to the next level. She says she thinks she wants to do it. Krystal says she’s not even thinking of that. While dancing with Dylan, Sasha and Krystal pull Lindsey into the bathroom. Sasha tells her she saw something near her that reached for her but not Dylan. Lindsey brushes her off and says she (they) saved her. They should just return to the dance floor and keep having fun. Then they hear screams and the building shakes. Chaos has broken out. They try to make it out but Dylan is missing. Then the windows shatter. A door slammed and Lindsey hears her name being called. Then she goes Krystal grabs her and pulls her up and outside. The beast is in the alley. Sasha says it’s the same thing she saw in the club. They run. Jake throws two trucks at it but this doesn’t it for long. Lindsey is frozen for a minute but Jake picks her up. They all make it to the car, but the creature lunges at the car and scoops up Twon and sends him flying. In all this madness, Lindsey sees Dylan running away. Jake hurls things at the creature but it doesn’t stop its attack. Jake makes an opening in the ground and the creature falls into the hole.

Twon dies. Dylan comes by later,(to Sasha). He doesn’t let on that he did or did not see the monster but wonders why everyone left and the police were there. Lindsey doesn’t tell him about Twon’s death. She just takes comfort in his embrace and apologizes for not answering when he said he called out to her. The next day, the news explains the events as “a tornado”. When they meet the next day, Lindsey realizes that they’re dealing with a messenger from the underworld. Mouse says his name is “Lor” a hideous beast in the underworld who was too hideous to be seen in this realm. It will take all of them to fight him, F atima gives them another cryptic message about clearing thensing their minds, strengthen their hearts, and let their powers guide them. The answers might not always be there but those with the power can get them. Some guys from Twon’s crew and the football team get in an argument over the football team talking ish about Twon’s death. (They say he was high and tried to fly). Then the twins then find out have ice powers (one of em freezes the fixture on the ceiling). They tell her they’re better at *this* than they’ll ever be. Twon’s funeral comes and goes. The cops try to question Jake but Henry won’t let them do it alone. Days later, Dylan asks Lindsey to be his girl officially. While they are kissing, the ground trembles. Ivy and Isis give a hint that they know Dylan (they accuse him of playing with the help). Even more so when they light up the scoreboard and a firey burst from her finger. He tells them to go home. They’re going to far. He tells Liindsey to go to her car and he’ll handle it. Lindsey says she’ll stay. Lindsey asks the twins if they have a problem with her. Ivy says such a big problem and tries to attack. The other joins in. But they’re lifted to the ground and thrown by Jake. Dylan rushes over and says he can protect Lindsey and the field turns black. Then they all go at each other. Dylan tells Jake he doesn’t want this and then the three retreat. Jake tells Lindsey she needs to stay about from Dylan. They know they need answers but can’t ask either Dylan or the twins.

Even tho Lindsey knew there was something different about Dylan she’s upset that he didn’t tell her who he was. Later, she meets up with Dylan (Earlier we learn Dylan can shot electricity from his fingers). Them not telling each other basically doesn’t change anything and they end up kissing. The Mystix throws around some theories. Maybe the three are working with Charron and sent as a distraction. Maybe the twin that can start fires started the two electrical fires. Maybe one of them summoned the beast that killed Twon. Lindsey says she’s the one the beast is there for. Sasha says then it should have taken her. Sasha says she can’t do this anymore. Lindsey says she can’t either and leaves the cafeteria. After this, she stays home from school for hours days. She realizes she’s still grieving her parents.

Sasha astral projects to Lindeey and gives her a pep talk. Lindsey tells her she thinks she can control people’s thoughts, but there’s something she needs to work on first. She tells Sasha she thinks she needs to talk to Dylan. When she meets up with him Dylan doesn’t look right. He’s too pale. Lindsey realizes that he can’t come near the house because of her gguardian. He tells her he doesn’t want to (never wanted to) hurt her. She realizes also that he was the one sent to (kill her?). They he transports her somewhere and the last thing she remembers is him telling her he loves her. Lindsey is back on the train.

She sees Dylan’s face now skeletal and something out the window (the creature). Her mom makes her chant “Dark as night. Take away this beast tonight). Then she wakes up. She sees the Fire and Ice twins. Then she sees Walter Bryant and notices she’s tied to a bed. He demands they (all) give him what he wants. Dylan says he can get what he needs from her. When alone Dylan confesses he was sent to seduce her. He wants to know how she got her power so he could duplicate it or harvest it. All he had to get her to do is read his mind. Only she never could. He says Walter did something to give them powers. He was one of the kids on the bus trip. He and the other two girls. He says out of the seven they’re the only ones that survived the experiment. He says he wants Lindsey’s eyes to harvest more like her. But he tells Lindsey what they had was real. Lindsey asks if he wants her to give up her powers. He says he can’t help her. So, Lindsey tells him to kiss her (as she looks into him and sees the real him). After the kiss he undo’s the restraints. Bryant says times up. He tells Lindsey to get out of there and he’ll take care of him. Lindsey realizes they were holding her in the school when she comes outside and sees the field. A bird swoops up Lindsey in it’s claws. The bird is Mrs. Hampton. She’s a harpy. She tells her her parents knew what she was and her purpose. Lindsey knows now she can fight the darkness. We find out Lindsey influenced Dylan’s mind during the kiss to do something else. While the experiments are showing off, Sasha uses her talent to astral projects to confuse them. Jake crumbles the building and with this the twins and Dylan.

They get a text from Sasha and Jake and Lindsey go to Sasha’s. They find Mrs. Carrington bleeding. She says he wants her dead. She cost him money. Jake starts fighting Mr. Carrington. Lindsey smashes Mr. Carrington over the head with a chair. S asha is found in her dad’s office with her arm bruised. They try to get Sasha out but then a fire breaks out. Lindsey smashes a chair and creates an opening, but Mrs. Carrington comes through another (gun-pointed). Debri comes flying and shakes Mrs. Carrington to death. The voice belongs to Jake’s grandfather. It’sa Pegasus. Then there’s a snake (Krystal’s guardian). Sasha’s dad is killed. The house is burned to the ground. The kids are recused and carried away by their guardians in their animal forms. (Gerald was the python). With the help of the stones, the Mystix are able to banish Charron for good. Franklin appears to Krystal at the end. She asks where he’s been. He lifts his sunglasses, shows her his red eyes, tells her he’ll see her around and disappears into the forest.

My Thoughts
Well that was sooo ANTI CLIMATIC! This shouldn’t have even been thought of as a supernatural book. This was an EXCUSE to write a YA love story and then pass it off as supernatural. And it’s not that this series (should* have been bad. It had a decent concept. It had characters with good potential. I particularly thought Jake’s storyline was a little more developed than Krystal’s and Sasha’s and Lindsey's. He had just a *tad* more personality. Although Krstyal’s story wasn’t as bad as Lindsey and Sasha’s because she didn’t spend the whole book in some love-sick haze over Franklin. And speaking of Franklin I liked how it left off with him in a “To be Continued” kind of way. Tho, I hope not. Because I will not be reading any more of these books if the author decides to make another one. Unless it’s JUST about the Mystix fighting evil and not their love lives. With this one I kinda got the feeling that Dylan wasn’t who Lindsey thought he was. It usually puts me on edge when people who hasn’t taken any interest in you whatsoever all of a sudden start (even following you on social media). I was surprised about the twins tho. So I thought Dylan, Ivy, and Isis were a good addition to the story. When I think about “the darkness” and how it was used in this story, I couldn’t help compare it to “the darkness” in Twitches. Love was also used in that story as a central theme, but it just worked better in Twitches. I guess because it was a different kind of love story. Anyways, I’m happy to have finish this series. There’s another half-book on the list but it’s nowhere I see and I’m just not gonna worry about it.

Rating: 6 Of all the stories Jake’s was probably my favorite in the series.

I just reviewed this on my blog a few hours ago.
To view the full review, click here Mystyx: Book 4 Mesmerize By: Artist Arthur

This is the fourth book in the Mystyx series by Artist Arthur (is that really her name? Because it sounds like a pen name). I'm not sure if this is the last book, because after reading the end, I was disappointed at when the final fight happened, it seemed too easy to win, I was expecting something more to happened, for ex: like in all of the Harry Potter books, there is a big final fight; same all of the Vampire Academy books (although I havent read book 6 yet, don't ask). At first, I thought that this was a standalone, until i read it, that is.

I'm going to try something different in reviews from now on (as I explained in my last review), so that it'll help you decide if you want to read this book easier. I got this idea from TheBookVlogger on youtube. I'm not using all of the categories she used, just some. Give me ideas if there are some that you want to see.

Sex: No (just some making out scenes)
Gore: No (although there were some gross parts, but I read about a lot worse and I've seen a lot worse on tv shows and movies)
Magic: Yes

Romance: (This one's kind of hard to rate/say) there is romance, but it didn't seem very real to me, she barely knows the guy and she falls in love with him, there's one line she said to Sasha, "I know that he's cute and he likes me. That's enough for now." That idiot! That is a stupid answer, that isn't nearly enough to know if a guy is dangerous or not, especially in the kind of world they live in, female protagonists like that annoy me so much. Anyways, it didn't feel realistic to me, so I don't know what to rate it.
Action: 3 stars (there is supposed to be a lot of action, but there's not as much as I hoped)
Pacing: 3 stars (not much happened in the first certain amount of ages, it was kind of slow for me)
Plot: 3 stars (the book had the potential to be amazing, but it didn't feel that way to me, I wasn't satisfied when i finished this book)

The cover does not look like a Korean girl, considering how often she referred to her heritage in the book, It sounds like she looked a lot more Asian than this, or maybe it's just me. Although, I do like that they showed the M mark on the cover on her leg, like they did with the other Mystyx.

A few of the things that I liked about this book was the plot/idea. I didn't enjoy this book, there wasn't as much action as you would expect from a book like this, which, as I said, is disappointing. Even though it's the fourth book in the series, it's not too confusing.

The story starts with Lindsey talking about her parents death and that she has to live in a big creepy house with a creepy old strict lady.

I didn't like Lindsey Yi, she’s: boring, stupid (she trusts a guy and is madly in love with him just because he's cute and likes her, that's saying that a girl should date any guy that is good looking and likes her), etc. Yup, you guessed it, she's not the type of female protagonist I like to read about. I thought that she and the story woud be more interesting from what I read on goodreads (the synopsis), but it ended up being the opposite. I wanted to strangle her, that's how irritating she was (almost as bad as Bella from Twilight, but not as much, thank god).
I didn't like Dylan either. If a guy like him suddenly came out of no where and said that he liked me, I would immediately think something suspicious was going on, especially in the world they live in. I mean, who cares if he's popular and good looking, they never told us anything about his personality and he seemed a little controlling.

I found Lindsey and Dylan's love boring, they're too... I don't know how to explain (it's not my type of relationship, as I mentioned in my other reviews, the kind I like is the love and hate relationship, for ex: like in Kodocha, The Chicagoland Vampires, The Otherworld series: Book 1 Bitten, etc).

I found the evil creatures like something from old cartoons, as in silly, the big clawed creatures stomping, not something I'm used to reading. Don't get me wrong, I love classical cartoons, but not in a book for young adults.

Their powers reminded me a little bit of the tv show Charmed. Krystal can see ghosts like all of the witches in Charmed can, Sasha can teleport like Paige, and astral project like Prue, Jake has the power of telekineses like Prue does, and Lindsey is an empath like Phoebe. That's one of the reasons why I wanted to read this book so much. But Charmed is a lot better and more interesting.

I know this review sounds very negative, but if you want an honest review, then here it is, I tried to make this not sound mean, but it might get misinterpreted that way, no offense to anyone who likes this book.

Overall, I didn't enjoy this book, I really wanted to, but I just didn't.
Krystal and Jake's stories sound like they're the best stories out of the four (from what I read of the synopsis), but I still don't plan on reading the first three anytime soon. If there are more books in this series next, then I'm probably going to pass on them.

It was hard to rate this book, I ended up rating this book: 2.5 stars, but since I didn’t make any half stars pictures, I’m going give this book 3 stars.

First off, the cover looks like a white girl with cat eye make-up, not a Korean chick that, as far as I could tell wasn't a mixed race Korean but full-blooded. And considering how often she referred to her heritage in the book, and how often racial slurs were thrown her way, I'm guessing she looked a lot more Asian than this. But maybe the copy I'm seeing is just off . . .

I have to say, I'm kinda glad this story arc is over because by this one, the circumstances were getting downright silly. And a running theme through all of them was how easily the darkness was defeated. MESMERIZE was no exception so I can't really fault it for that since at least the series has been consistent. But I guess just the silliness of how it manifested just got to me and I really couldn't take it seriously anymore. With the big clawed creatures stomping about, I kept picturing something out of an old He-Man cartoon as opposed to something more tangible than ink.

Lindsey's story had the potential to be really great. Here's a girl that's trying to get over the death of her parents and in the midst of that healing she needs to tangle with some dark stuff too. It could have been an epic parallel that would have ridden the plot nicely. But holy shit does Lindsey get fucking dumb when Dylan enters the picture. I've been saying lately that sometimes one needs to get whacked in the face with a branch in order to see the forest for the trees. In Lindsey's case, she needed to get gang raped by a forest of sequoias to get that far. I mean dumb to the point where I wanted to throw my reader. In this case it would have been my computer screen. At work. That would have been disastrous on may levels.

As far as anything concerned Dylan, he could do no wrong. Except he was set up to be something major right from the beginning. Not to mention he was really controlling, which she was okay with. And even when the big reveal was made, Lindsey still had a hard time swallowing the water being thrown on her face. Even in the middle of the THIS IS ME moment, she's still like "okay, maybe there's a possibility . . ." Yeah, and there a possibility that Dina Lohan is a bad parent.

Lindsey's level of stupidity and her blatant disregard for the obvious was so overwhelming that I really couldn't pay attention to much else. There was a great stand together moment at the end where the Mystyx joined forces to defeat Charon and his darkness brigade but since Lindsey was lobotomized up until the last possible second, it really didn't bare much weight for me. Especially when the rest of her friends were sitting there going HELLO?

The ending left it open for more books but at this point, I really couldn't figure out if I was still reading because I really wanted to or because I had some self-imposed obligation to keep reading the series. Considering how it ended, I'm going with the latter. If there are more books I'm probably going to pass on them. The series as a whole is two out of two for me. Krystal's and Jake's stories were by far the best, with Sasha having a less than stellar voice and Lindsey being a major moron. Add in the overall silliness of the villains and I'm going to call it a flush. It could really go either way at this point and while it's leading into Krystal's voice, which I like, the potential silliness is a turnoff. This'll probably end up being one of those series where if I have the time I may finish it but right now I think I'm good.

First off, this book is being added to my list of annoyingly inaccurate covers. Yes, it is a nice cover, if Lindsey weren't a young Korean girl. Why would the publisher choose to not represent the character as written? Multiculturalism should be a selling point, not something thrown in to say they're doing it, only to back off during the marketing.

The book itself is interesting. I didn't realize it was the fourth book in a series until I started reading, and there are multiple references to previous events, but I didn't feel completely lost, which is a credit to the author.Things flowed and there was enough background information scattered throughout to make sense of what was happening. I think if I had read the previous three books in the series I would have felt a stronger connection with the characters and a more emotional reaction to some of the events that unfold.

What made this book hard to read was that Lindsey was all over the place. Lindsey is not an easy character to follow. One moment she's giving details about the horrific death of her parents and then the next she's standing at the door day dreaming about a hot guy. But don't worry because within the first fourth of the book, you'll hear it again and again. Her thoughts are completely random and it makes it hard to know what is really happening. There's even one point where Lindsay has just gone through a test and is getting ready to describe her terrifying ordeal when she starts thinking about going sledding down a hill and then acknowledges she doesn't know why she's thinking of that! It makes me think the author needed to up the word count and decided to add in random descriptions.

The ending confused me a bit and I wasn't quite sure why at the end Lindsey still felt the way she did. I won't say about what because I don't want to spoil the ending, but it really drove me nuts. I was fine with the events, I just didn't get Lindsey's thought process.

One thing I will say for Arthur is that she is not afraid to take risks and make her readers furious. As a new reader I was shocked by some of the things that happened to characters that were probably central ones in the previous books, but it worked here. This was a solid book, and although not a complete stand alone it was enjoyable. I would recommend reading the Mystyx series in order and even though I have yet to read them I'd say it would be worth the time.

I'm super excited about this series. This series I have been following from the very beginning and have love it. While I enjoyed this book, I felt like there is something missing. I think its cause I wasn't able to really connect to Lindsey as well as I could with the other mystyx group. Still, the book is good. If you haven't read the series I suggest you do. Ms. Arthur writes about teens with a real life, with a hint of something paranormal.

In this book, the reader meet Lindsey. After moving again, Lindsey is immediately thrown in a world of chaos. I liked Lindsey. She wasn't stuck up or mean. She really just wanted some stability. I don't think I connected well with this character cause I couldn't grasp her connection with the other mystyx characters. It was like she was just thrown in the mix. It took a few chapters before I could find myself understanding Lindsey and where she came from. Lindsey is fierce and strong. She catches on fast and becomes one of the group before you know it. I really like how Ms. Arthur brought some interesting characters from the first book I thought were gone! I gasp once the secret was out and thought "WOAH!"

This story doesn't only cover Lindsey's story but also covers what is going on with the other mystyx characters. I miss my other books friends and it was good to see them fighting against evil all together. Once again, more questions were raised as others were answered. You can tell in this book that the enemy is getting stronger and ready to attack. Not just a small attack but a full on final battle. Each character has face their demon and the final showdown is coming! I can't wait to read how it is all going to end!!!

Mesmeriz is a good book! Filled with lots of battles, death, and adding a new mystyx to the group, the group is getting stronger. With the forces combine and done with the petty fighting, the mystyx group is ready! EEEEP!

I really can’t give this book a true rating since I haven’t read the other three books in the series. I assumed that each book took place in the same town with different characters that didn't interact with one another. My assumption was proven wrong a few pages into Mesmerize when I didn’t understand certain references that Lindsey was making. I read the summary of the book and thought that the book would start off with Lindsey moving to Lincoln but it actually takes place a year in the future. With that said the summary is misleading to people who might think it’s a standalone novel in the book series.

Lindsey Yi is living in Lincoln, Connecticut after surviving a train crash in which both of her parents died. She lives with her guardian who isn’t related to her whatsoever and ignores the comments people make about how her guardian lives in a haunted house. Her three best friends are Sasha, Krystal, and Jake and all three of them, along with Lindsey, possess a special ability. Lindsey has the ability to read other people’s thoughts and later we find out that she can also influence people’s thoughts if she tries hard enough. The mysterious and handsome Dylan moves to town and catches Lindsey's attention. Despite his shady past that he refuses to bring up, Lindsey and Dylan fall in love. But besides their growing relationship, evil lurks in Lincoln and that evil wants Lindsey.

One thing I didn’t like about Mesmerize was how easily Lindsey fell for Dylan. She barely knew a thing about him but yet she trusted him and fell in love with him. The ending also left me unsatisfied. The Mystyx group defeated Charon too easily in my opinion. I was expecting a bigger battle but instead it was a tiny one. I also wasn’t too crazy on how each of the Mystyx’s guardians turned into animals. I can’t wrap my mind around that.

All in all it was a good read but I wished I had read the other three books beforehand.

Things come to a head in this book for our little Mystyx gang, but I'll warn you: there is still more to come in this series. I'll try to keep the spoilers in this review to a minimum, but some of the stuff that happens here is pretty big.

First off, I'll warn people that you might be surprised at some of the events in this book. We do get to see a whole new side of Lindsey, but it comes at a very serious cost for our main characters. I have to admit that I was pretty sad to see certain things in the book happen, but all things considered it made sense that things like this would potentially happen- especially considering all of the pain and loss that everyone has had to go through earlier in the series.

There's a big confrontation in this book and initially I thought that this might have been the end of the series, although there is still another book and enough here is left open to where the series can go into an entirely new direction. I'm kind of digging the way it ended, to be honest. I think it'd be more interesting to see how these new story lines develop.

The only big problem I had with this book is that at times the action scenes felt like they went by a little too quickly. This does help give me the feeling that things are happening fast and furious, but I just wanted a little more detail and explanation in a few places. It just needed a little more time spent on these elements.

Overall this was a good read and one I'd recommend to fans of the series thus far. It's good to get a deeper glimpse into Lindsay's life, although I wish the actions scenes were a little more drawn out. (Especially the final battle of the book.) It's not my absolute favorite of the series, but the last few paragraphs has got me pretty excited for what might happen in the next entry.

Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC.WOW this is the first book I have read in this series. I know I did it backwards but this book cover called me so much I just had to read it and I am so glad I did.

Lindsey Yi is still mourning the death of her parents in a horrible train wreck a year ago. She has moved to a small town of Lincoln, Connecticut. She is living with her guardian and attending yet another new school. The only thing good about moving here is that she has found a home where she has friends and no longer considers herself a freak because of her gift. Here she has met others who have gifts and are not afraid to use them for good.

As the school year is winding down Lindsey and her friends feel like something big is going to happen to the town. There are strange things lurking about and the weather is changing constantly. Then Lindsey comes face to face with evil and the only way to destroy this evil is to confront her past and let go of the pain of losing her parents. This task is a lot harder than it seems because everytime she closes her eyes she can see her parents die over and over again. Will she be able to look past her pain and stand up for good or will evil prevail?

What will lindsey do? Will her friends be there for her? Will she find answers to her questions in order to let go and come to turns with reality? Come along for a great fast paced adventure and read this book because you will not be able to put it down. I am going to go read the first three because I LOVED this books o much so I have to see how the other three friends came into their powers and what is in store for them on the fifth book which comes out this August 2012.

I didn't figure out that this was part of a series until I began reading. There were some things that Lindsey kept mentioning that I was like.. Um? Is there something I was missing. With that in mind, I still really liked this book. It kept my attention and it explained almost everything so I could keep up.

Cover: The cover is really pretty! I like how it shows her mark on her ankle, which I know understand. Plus the cover keeps it quite ominous and it was true to the book! Plus it has purple, I love purple! :)

Plot: The plot was a little confusing. Granted that this is the fourth book in the Mystyx series and a lot had happened in those three other books. For the most part it kept me interested, but there were some grammatical mistakes and sentence errors that I hope are corrected.

Characters:
So, first there's Lindsey. She is still the new girl, newly inducted cheerleader, and mind reader. Yes, you read that right, mind reader. She is a very interesting character from the beginning and yet, she's has the same thoughts and emotions we all have. She is strong and brave, but also a teenager who wants a relationship, which it was nice to be able to connect to her on that level.

The there's Dylan. I didn't really like Dylan. To me he was sketchy and evasive, never divulging any personal information about himself. Which I didn't like. If some random guy, even if he was the most popular and hottest guy in school, started paying attention to me I would be wondering what's up with that. Which is exactly what Dylan did. Sure, he had some very sweet moments and was nice at times, but I didn't like him.

All in all: It didn't make me want to read the other books to get the full story, but it was a good story on its own! I give it 31 out of 51 tacos!

It’s hard to form an accurate opinion of a book when you start the series four books in. Mesmerize was the fourth book in the Mystyx series. I didn’t realize that when I started reading the book. I was a little confused by some of the descriptions, because they were based on events from previous books. It didn’t hinder my understand of the book, but it would have been nice to have the complete back story.
I liked Lindsey and Dylan. Actually, I liked all of the Mystyx and Dylan (he wasn’t a Mystyx). Lindsay has a haunted past. She’s tortured by the death of her parents from the previous year. Because she is overcome with grief she becomes the perfect target for evil. Enter Dylan. Super moody but mysterious. He has been in Lindsey’s dreams since the night of her parents’ death. Why? She has no idea, but she is excited to have him. He seems like a nice enough fella too. He’s a little stand-offish at times, but what guy isn’t when your girlfriend’s friends don’t like you? Unfortunately, Dylan isn’t as dreamy as he first seems…
There is a fair share of supernatural demon hunting in this book. I liked the mythology aspect too. The evil force lurking in the shadows? Well, it’s the King of the Underworld, of course. Each of the Mystyx has a super power that reminds me of the Power Rangers (circa 1997). Or maybe a hyped up version of Captain Planet without the planet powers.
If you’ve read the other books, then you will probably appreciate Mesmerize more than I did. As a stand alone, I did enjoy this book, but it was hard to connect with the characters. I think the insight and character building happened early on in the series, and I missed out.

Review: Mesmerize by Artist Arthur
4 STARS
It's hard to rate this book, because this is the first book of the series that I have read so it was a little confusing to me at times. I believe this is the 4th of the mystyx series.
The Mystyx were created by Styx and given powers before they were born. Their are four of them we know about.
Lindsey Yi is Korean American. Who was in a train wreck a year ago that killed her parents. She lives now with her guardian in what people believe is a haunted house. She can read minds of those around her except when she or they are wearing black. This story is about her and being tested as well.
Krystal is a medium. Jake has the only active power he moves things with his mind. Sasha can travel outside her body. They are only juniors in high school.
They are supposed to stop Charon from comming to this realm and keep him in hades. They all need to controll their powers and work together somehow.
It was interesting and if I had read other books probably would care more for the characters.
Their are a lot of Deaths around the four teenagers. Lots of new kids in the school.
Would recommend that you read the first 3 books first to enjoy the story better.
I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley.

I really wanted to like this book. The blurb sounded like something I would really enjoy. What the blurb didn't tell me was that this was book four in a series. I believe knowing that fact would have made a huge difference. As it was, I was continually confused by what was happening - having no clue that a lot of the information I needed was in the previous books.

I loved that Lindsay was Korean, but the cover does not look like a Korean girl (I know because my daughter is full Korean). Also, Harlequin advertises this book in their "African American" genre - which is *not* Korean.

Lindsay was a good character for the most part, but her acceptance of less than stellar treatment from Dylan was troubling. Dylan did nothing for me. He was cute, but there was really not much else from him besides his mistreatment of Lindsay. Plus he never gave her any personal information. What was with that? This is not the message I want to be sending to girls - that it's okay for a guy to treat you badly, even if he is cute.

I did like the Mystyx groups - they were good.

However, the ultimate fight at the end seemed rushed and left me a little flat.

Recommendation - if you've read the other books in the series, definitely pick this one up to continue. If you haven't, don't start here. Start with the others first so you have a clue what's going on.

Okay, okay! It's been a few days now since I've finished this book. I've been racking my brains on a nice way to phrase this review. But there is no easy way, so here goes:

I DID NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL!

The main character gave me a headache. I tortured myself trying to finish it just because I hate to quit on a book. The whole time I was talking myself into finding some good in it, like I do every book that falls a little short on my expectations, because I hate to give low rating. But at last I just can't.

Granted, I didn't read the first couple of books in this series, so I figure they have to be worth something if the author made it to book #4. I'll give you one star for that.

The last ten pages was where I felt the whole story should have been progress wise. I'll give you another star for that.

Lastly, I really really wanted to like Lindsey, but I so could not relate. The half rating goes to the fact that the Mystyx characters all have had cool powers.

Since there's no half rating scale here, I'll give the other half in good faith.

This book just didn't do it for me. Sorry.

My Rating: 3.5 stars
My Review: This is definitely the best book in the series so far. Lindsey with her ability to read minds makes her inner dialogue very exciting. She has a haunted past and an important destiny. And now she’s got a guy…but is he really into her or is it just an act. I didn’t believe him for one second! But Lindsey was mesmerized by his eyes, and she started falling for him. Some very surprising things happen in to other characters, not just Lindsey. And there are a few new characters…bad guys, not Mystyx. This series also add diversity to the paranormal genera, since Lindsey is South Korean, and some of the other characters are from different ethnic groups. It’s a good series to pick up.
Cover Art Review: Better than the last 2. Really shows off the ankle mark. Looks like Lindsey, except the bangs are missing.

Lindsey Yi is used to changing schools. This move is different though. She lost both her parents in a train accident.

Lindsey can read other people's thoughts and emotions.

On a weird note... while reading this book I read the line where the author said less then one percent of the population dreams in color and I had to stop and look that up to see if that was just something in the story world of if that is a true fact. (Yes, I know I am weird.)

It was interesting reading and figuring out how Dylan figures into things and who he is. Is he good? or bad?

Who will win the battle of good and evil?

This book is #4 of a series.

I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. I think it is probably best for ages 10-15. A good young adult book.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Mesmerize Book review Mystyx series
This was the first book I read in this series and it was an unexpected delight, definitely for the younger YA readers this book was a clean and simple read. In this addition we see the Mystyx gang face their toughest challenge yet. I read it as a standalone, it wasn't confusing yet I could sense there were some very interesting back stories. This book was a rollercoaster of emotions. Lindsey was a character who observed a lot but processed later though I wasn't a fan of this approach I could understand given everything she’d been through. Fast paced and quirky this book was an adventure.

NOTE TO SELF:
Next time, check Goodreads BEFORE you buy a book, read the whole thing, and THEN realize it was the 2nd-to-last book in a series.

*facepalm*

BUT, for being read without any background information, it was incredible! I really loved the characters, and how it was all Greek Mythology-y.

Great book. Now I just need to go read the first 3. :)

I'm 15, and I recommend this series.

This was the first book from this series that I had read and enjoyed it. Mesmerize was easy to read, fast paced and kept my interest throughout the entire book. This was a clean read that I would recommend to any young adult. Being the first book that I had read from the series, I was able to enjoy without being confused. I will definitely be reading the other books in the series now!

This book wasn't for me. The plot is interesting, but I couldn't relate to Lindsey. She observes things and thinks later, or she thinks too much (for me). I'm more into books where the characters take action right away. It's hard to explain other than I didn't connect with her. I ended up not finishing the book.

I tried really hard to like this book. It is the fourth installment in the Mystyx series, and it centers around Lindsey Yi an empath and telepath. Despite an alluring cover, I thought the author could have gone further in developing her characters and their surroundings; the action was great but the descriptions and such were unimpressive.
