Struggling to stay alive with a gaping wound across my back, I desperately wondered how I got to this point. My knife-wielding opponent was not the attacker...He'd been defending himself against an ego-driven, menacing thug who was intent on hurting him. That thug was me.In a hole of anxiety and depression, Luke Kennedy resorted to drugs, alcohol, graffiti and fighting in a desperate bid to silence his frantic mind. Soon he was leading a street-fighting and graffiti crew, and constantly coming close to killing others or being killed.Tortured by the voices in his head, Luke began looking for an out. Eventually he found it - and lost 47 kilos in the process. Redemption Road is the gripping and powerful story of Luke's journey from ego-driven, obese thug to fit, sober and successful business owner whose focus is on helping others turn their lives around.
Luke’s story is one of redemption. He was formerly an obese alcoholic, drug abuser and stood at the top of a violent street fighting gang. After getting stabbed on two separate occasions, Luke turned his life around through the disciplines of sport, business and spiritual enlightenment. He is now seen as an inspiration in his community through his business achievements and his willingness to do whatever it takes to help others.
I met Luke when he spoke at a recent work event. I felt inspired by Luke’s keynote speech and I was interested to learn more about his story.
Formerly called “Stabbed Ego”, Redemption Road is the story of Luke’s life. Falling in with the wrong crowd as a teenager and young man, he chases status and respect by engaging in violence and crime. Luke tells about how he was trapped in his own mind, constantly worrying what other people would think of him, which would in turn dictate his actions. Luke goes on to tell of his success in breaking away from the labels that he felt defined him and finding his true self.
I resonated with many of the mental health struggles that Luke spoke about: especially the constant worry of what other people think about you. His prose was simple and easy to read and the pacing kept me engaged. I can’t give anything but 5 stars for a person sharing his experience of life, realizing it didn’t have to be so burdensome and pulling himself out of the toxic cycle he was in. Not many people can say they have done that. I respect the enormous personal growth Luke has undergone during his life, learning how to quiet the chatter in his mind.
An excerpt that resonated with me: “Throughout life we often want to help those close to us; however, it’s almost impossible to change other people. Sure, we can plant seeds of hope and give tools and advice, but you can’t change people unless they want to change. The most important thing we can do to inspire change is to lead by example, to illustrate how great life can be when we’ve made positive changes ourselves.”
