Katherine McKalister's dull and lonely life is about to take a drastic turn. Everything she ever thought she knew is ripped away in a twist of fate as she finds out she isn't who she thought she was. The mysteries build as family journals and papers start to surface. One thing Katherine discovers stands above the rest, a bizarre family heritage accompanied by a centuries' old property.
Thrown into a dark journey, she must find her way through the dangerous tangle of secrets, deceptions and family rivals. And only steps behind is a creature risen from the burning times who holds the covenants made by her ancestors and is interested in nothing less than her and the power she wields to resurrect the family, all it's power and control of the generations to come.
Ms. Hutson grew up in the mountains of Virginia, which bear incredible influence on most of her work. She enjoys a rural life with lots of wild life, interesting people and inspirational circumstances! Most of her work walks on the dark side. Paranormal suspense/thrillers (with a little romance thrown in here and there), creature features, tantalizing ghost stories and legends brought into the light and into the lives of everyday characters to haunt even the brightest day time efforts to put the story away long after it's been read. Dark Poetry holds a small place among these efforts. There's always room for variation, however, as Ms. Hutson writes the occasional family drama, brings oral histories and folk tales to the written page, essays on every imaginable subject and even an occassional article on interesting or successful characters.
Katherine started out life in poverty; she was often picked on because of the way she dressed or the holes in her shoes. She lived in a tiny shack in a bad neighborhood.
But those days are gone; she now lives in a good neighborhood, and owns a chain of flower shops. The only problem now is dealing with her dead beat boyfriend and the nightmares she has been having. Katherine soon learns though, there is more to these nightmares than she knows. The lake, the house, and the creatures in her dreams are part of her inheritance.
This story was so good that it only took a couple of evenings to read. I had to force my self to put it down that first night so I could get some sleep. There wasn't a dull moment in this story. I also think this story is very unique and original. I have read a lot of books that have to do with different types of creatures, but the creature in this story was new to me.
I find it hard to believe this is Honey Hutson's first published Novel. She writes like a pro and will hold you captivated through the whole story.
Katherine’s life is in turmoil as she is suffering insomnia brought on by horrific nightmares and a deadbeat boyfriend, Nigel. She has lived her life passively but discovers she must grow strong after her father, the one person she is very close, commits suicide in front of her and she discovers her family’s dark secrets. She also discovers her own unnatural abilities with magic and the power she didn’t know she had to fight the evil forces of her own bloodline.
With a meager start in life, Katherine pulls herself up and successfully builds a chain of flower shops. As the protagonist, Katherine, discovers she has inherited a large track of land and a lake, making her a very wealthy woman. She sets out on a journey to the lake to find answers about her family.
This story is told in a most interesting way and will keep you on the edge of your seat as it hooks you in the beginning, and you don’t want to put the book down.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal and suspense but Ms. Hutson has a wonderful way of crossing genres and mixing a plot that anyone will enjoy. I’m looking forward to reading Inheritance Rising, her next book in the series.
I love these storyline books. I love stories where papers, and journals show up and then the main character is on this treasure hunt to learn about the past and uncovering strange and exciting (from what the synopsis of this books says:dangerous) adventures.
I received this as a goodreads giveaway book and I'm so happy I won this one. What a great first novel!! :-) it was creepy, sexy, magical, and mysterious. I will certainly be following this series and anything else this author writes. Great story!!
I won this book a while back through a Goodreads Giveaway, but due to circumstance only just got round to reading it properly. I wish I'd got round to reading it sooner! The idea is good and the characters engaging, I for certain had no idea where it was going! My only gripe would be I felt it had more potential. The idea really is a brilliant one, truly original in a very over saturated market which is rare. Unfortunately some moments felt skimmed over and a little rushed, where I would have preferred more detail and definitely a bit more proof reading! Some moments also didn't fully make sense, characters suddenly seeming to know or have done things where no previous explanation was offered. The climax was also a bit of a let down, Hutson really gets a sense of the sinister and menacing, but the climax scene rather left me wanting! I don't know if the author plans a prequel, but there is certainly room for development. All in all, worth a read, I definitely don't regret reading it, just a bit more depth and time spent to round the story a little more, and a decent proof reader, and Hutson could certainly be one to watch in the future. I for sure will be!
I won this through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway
Overall, I liked this book. It was mysterious, strange, and interesting. However, I really struggled through the beginning. It started off kind of slow, and it wasn't one of those books that immediately sucked me in. About a third of the way through, I genuinely became interested and curious about what was happening. I really enjoyed the different characters, and the overall story was intriguing. I liked the mystery, and I enjoyed Katherine's journey to find her own strength and confidence. One thing that was a little lacking was the creepiness. There were a lot of creepy and horrific things that happened, but most of the time I just wasn't feelin it. Some of the story line was a little confusing, but other than that it was good.
