National Best-selling author Adrianne Byrd has always preferred to live within the realms of her imagination where all the men are gorgeous and the women are worth whatever trouble they manage to get into. As an army brat, she traveled throughout Europe and learned to appreciate and value different cultures. Now she calls Georgia home.
Looking back, Adrianne believes her passion for writing began at the ripe old age of thirteen. It was also the age when she was introduced to romance novels by a most unlikely source: her fifteen-year old brother. The book was probably given to keep her out her brother’s hair, but it was a gift that changed her life.
In books, Adrianne found a way out of her awkward teenage years and into a world of fictional friends that would stay with her for a lifetime. It wasn’t long before her imagination took flight and she was writing her own love stories. Within a year, she completed her first book, which she vowed would never see the light of day.
Writing remained a hobby until 1994 when a co-worker approached her with an article on Romance Writers of America. Who knew there was an organization of women just like her? By 1996 she sold her first novel, Defenseless, to Kensington Publishing.
Her first release received rave reviews by Romantic Times and fans. Her other novels were consistently selected as the Magazine’s Top Pick. In 2001 Slam Jam nominated, Say You Love Me, for best romance. Her 2003 release Comfort of a Man won Romantic Times Best Multicultural Romance, Romance in Color’s Readers Choice Awards for Favorite Book, Favorite Hero, and Favorite Heroine; Shades of Romance’s Best/Arabesque Romance Book; Slam Jams Emma Award for Favorite Traditional Romance; Romance in Color’s Reviewer’s Choice Award for Author of the Year, Book of the Year and Best BET/Arabesque Book. And lastly Comfort of a Man was a 2003 Georgia Romance Writers Maggie finalist for best Contemporary. In 2004 she released her first romantic suspense novel, If You Dare, with HarperCollins. In 2006 her novel Measure of a Man was nominated for Best Multicultural Romance while her Harper Torch novel Deadly Double was nominated for an Emma. In 2007 she won an eharlequin.com Joey Award.
In 2006 Adrianne along with fellow writer Niobia Bryant penned her first Urban Novel, DESPERATE HOODWIVES, writing as De'nesha Diamond. The book is set for release February 2008 from Simon and Schuster. For more information, visit http://www.deneshadiamond.com.
Ms. Byrd has been featured in many national publications, including Today’s Black Woman, Upscale, and Heart and Soul. She has also won local awards for screenwriting. For the future, she looks forward to continue creating characters that make people smile, laugh, and fall in love.
Adrianne Byrd has yet to disappoint me with her writing skills. I enjoyed this novel so much, I read it in 1/2 a day..talk about a page turner. The chemistry between Isaiah and Brooklyn was sexy, steamy and very romantic. And talk about a good man, he had a good job, could cook, took dance lessons, was a good listener, brought her a tiara, and knew how to throw down in the bedroom, what more could she want. I couldn't believe she foolishly let him get away. I was glad she was able to overcome 'her' obstacles and finally realize that nothing is impossible, especially when you have love.
I'm not a big reader of romances. (In fact, this will be only my fourth romance review since I started documenting such things in 1999.) Adrianne Byrd is a regular on a forum I used to frequent, so when she announced the publication of this one, I figured I should check it out. But feel free to take all that follows with a grain of salt; for all I know, this is identical to other romances in the same vein. All I know is, it ain't like any romance I've read before. Or much of anything else I've read before, for that matter.
Comfort of a Man, despite being burdened with something of a cumbersome title, is one heck of a good ride. It's smart, funny, incisive, well-paced. Oh, yeah, and sexy. Sexy as all get-out. The story revolves around Brooklyn Douglas, a real-estate broker from Atlanta, and Isaiah Washington, a sales and marketing rep from Austin. They meet during a trip to New York (Isaiah's for business, Brooklyn's for pleasure) and, through the various machinations of Brooklyn's friends and an optimistic bartender, end up having a one-night stand. (The process of getting from meeting to bed could have been lifted from a Bunuel film. Byrd knows how to keep the tension high by throwing in all sorts of ludicrous, but realistic, delays.) Due to (imagine big roll of thunder here) a series of coincidences, the two find themselves thrown together again the next summer, and from there, well, you know the drill. If it doesn't have a lot of getting together, pushing away, and ultimately a happy ending, it ain't a romance, is it?
Where Byrd differs from the Steels, Cartlands, Blakes, et al. Of the world is in two very important places: her characters and her realism. The characters to be found in Comfort of a Man are not your usual cardboard cutouts, but real, multidimensional characters that a reader can identify with, instead of the paper constructs one has to stretch to even empathize with. Also, while the coincidences require suspension of disbelief (oh, my, do they ever), the situations Brooklyn and Isaiah find themselves in once the coincidences are past are realistic. Uncomfortably so, at times, for someone who's been there, done that, and bought the (ripped!) shirt.
The book's flaws are few, and the majority of them can probably be attributed to an editorial staff who weren't quite diligent enough. A few cliches here and there, some typos and grammatical flaws. Nothing, though, that really stops the book's flow. A few of the minor characters border on the cardboard (especially Brooklyn's son, Jaleel), but they only get a few pages of screen time. (In horror novels, they'd be the folks walking around with "KILL ME" signs.)
I really never thought I would so unapologetically recommend... a romance novel. But there it is. *** ½
Wow, such a high intense sexy and compassionate story. Ms. Adrianne Byrd's books are always so capativing and fun. Excellently written with a wonderful plot.
I love how Ms. Byrd use her expertise in creating and demonstrating each of main characters, Brooklyn Douglas and Isaiah Washington emotional sides.
This was a well written story, about Brooklyn and Isaiah who met at a hotel in NY at the bar, after hours of conversation over drinks they went to the room and had sex. Months later they reconnected in Atlanta when he went to visit his sick mom and began a courtship. Brooklyn has a seventeen year old son a ex husband the ex's girl friend who was her best friend and other interesting characters that make this a very very good read
I really enjoyed this sexy, sizzling and suspenseful story. Loved how hard Isaiah worked to show Brooklyn how much she meant to him. And how the fling she wanted, just wasn't enough for him. Hated that Brooklyn made Isaiah pay for Evan's sins. As a result, her trust issues blocked what could have been the greatest love story of all time! Love that Evan, Brooklyn's sleazy, cheating ex-husband got just what he deserved! Awesome story!
Comfort of a Man is a re-release by Adrianne Byrd originally published in 2003. Brooklyn Douglas is a recently divorced mother of a teenage son, who is attempting to put her live back together when she and her girlfriends decided to take a trip to the Big Apple for some rest and relaxation. Brooklyn is taking a break from dealing with the opposite sex, much to the dislike of her friends. Brooklyn on the other hand is recovering from some pretty traumatic emotionally battle scars because of the way her ex-husband left (enter ex-best friend, stage right!), but there’s nothing like a little peer pressure, to make you take the leap of faith you didn’t know you needed, right?
Enter, Isaiah Washington, work-a-holic extraordinaire. From the moment he set eyes on Brooklyn he knew she had taking over the top spot in his “to be had” list. Dusting off his cheesy one liners, he makes a play for Brooklyn that leads them to one incredible night in NYC. Then she disappears. Brooklyn is not ready for the feelings Isaiah stirs, so she cuts and runs. Without her last name, Isaiah can’t even begin to find her. Fate had other plans. Several months after their first encounter, an Atlanta highway brings them back together. BAM!!
While Brooklyn is dealing with a surly teenager (are teenagers ever NOT surly?), Isaiah is dealing with his own personal issues that may work to keep these two apart. Ah, but again, fate is having none of that. These two were meant to be and no matter how much they fought the feelings or what situations life threw at them (and trust me, they were in a batting cage), love prevailed (sigh…).
Although I enjoyed Comfort of a Man, I would have liked to have seen some interaction between Isaiah and Brooklyn’s son. When blending a family, that is a pretty strong dynamic. The story lacked any scenes between the two. I also would have liked to learn the reason why Brooklyn’s ex-best friend did what she did. I sort of missed the development of that part of the story.
All in all, if you haven’t read this one, Comfort of a Man is worth the read, despite the two missing dynamics of the story. I’m going to give it 3.5 out of 5 pencils. Nice job, Ms. Byrd!
"She wants a little comfort...He wants a lot more." This was a little twist on the theme of reluctant hero which I found stimulating. she's getting over a bad divorce--which was done believably--and a teenage son who is doing that sullen adolescent thing. While on an annual girl's weekend in NYC, they dare her to have a one night stand saying she's turning into a bitter prude.
She doesn't intend to until she runs into a sexy stranger whose easy to talk to. Their one night stand is awesome. The morning after she's the one to slip away and he is left hurt and bewildered.
Later he comes to Atlanta where she lives to be with his sick mother. They run into each other. Okay that was a little formulaic, the happy coincident. But it was worked in smoothly and with a little humor. The story continues with him realizing he's falling in love and trying to get her to do so--at least to admit to deeper feelings for him; she won't even admit it to herself.
the resolution was handled skillfully by the author; I was totally riveted. Couldn't put it down. The writing and editing were up to Harlequin's solid standards. Ms. Byrd is a winner!
This story didn't work for me for a bunch of reasons: 1. I didn't feel the chemistry between Isaiah & Brooke. 2. I didn't particularly like Brooke. 3. The timeline of this so-called romance. 4. Jaleel (Brooke's 16 year old son) and her parents never get to meet Isaiah before he pops the question. 5. Brooke's friends are some serious dingbats. I certainly don't want friends offering such stupid advice. 6. Speaking of stupid advice, Brooke's mum, Karen? Ugh. 7. Jaleel's thought process. I don't know but that didn't feel like a 16 or 17 year old to me. He sounded more like 13 or 14.
I absolutely loved Isaiah and Brooklyn's story! Isaiah was so sweet and patient with Brooklyn! I loved how they kept running into each other in the two cities. It was definitely fate! They were made for each other!
I've debated about putting this book on the 'erotica' shelf, but given the amount and detail of the passionate displays (how's that for a euphemism?) I decided to go with it.
Sort of your atypical story. Here we have a girl who is just looking for no-strings-attached sex, and it's the guy who wants the hearts and flowers. In other words, he wants forever and she's having none of it.
Fun little romance novel, with some great humorous moments. I liked the characters well enough. Felt like she was fighting a little TOO hard to not cave in to forever with the perfect man. And honestly his falling for her seemed a bit...over the top. Still, if you're going to dream, this is a fantasy lover come true which gives a pleasant sort of satisfaction when everything comes together.
The best part of the book though were the minor characters, especially Isaiah's snappy assistant.
I could not put this book down. From beginning to end, I wanted to know what the future held for Isaiah and Brooklyn.
There is a common theme to this book that I have noticed in other books that I have read, and that is, past emotional hurt(s) and disappointment(s) can be the overwhelming ingredient for not moving forward. One of several causes to keep women rooted in a place of bitterness and distress. What cannot be overlooked is that Isaiah chose to challenge Brooklyn emotionally with very few words and a lot of action. Doing so distinguished him from what she previously experienced. There should always be a difference between then and now.
I was first introduced to Adrianne Byrd with her Kings Brothers series. I was disappointed in the portrayal of the relationships in that series. I'm very happy to see that Ms. Byrd can write true romance.
I read this novel in two days. I loved the realistic portrayal of Brooklyn and Isaiah's relationship. I like that Isaiah was not over-the-top rich. He was a successful businessman who worked hard for his success. He was a gentleman. He gave Brooklyn several chances to back out of their first encounter.
I enjoyed the friendship Brooklyn shared with her friends. The drama was realistic. I enjoyed this novel very much and would definitely re-read.
Classic Adrienne Byrd: a little humor, some drama and whole lot of heat! Great storyline with characters who were a little older, which made them, IMO, a little more relatable. Loved it and didn't want it to end!
A good man is hard to find but when Brooklyn Douglas finds one the pain the last man caused her gets in the way of their relationship.I found myself understanding both points of view and wanting these 2 love birds to find a way to be together.
This is an awesome love story between Brooklyn and Isaiah. I love the way that he was patient with her as she had to overcome quite a few obstacles in her life. To me he exhibited the meaning of true love. This story sfo,e my heart...a must read!
I love getting acquainted again with Brooklyn and Isaiah. Plus, the comedic relief of Toni and Mrs. Georgia. This story was great and it gives people hope of finding love again. I love it.
Had this book for a while and it will join the shelf with many of my favorites from Ms. Byrd......If you haven't read this you should DEFINITELY give it a read......
