Love and Poetry

Based on the popular songs of the Haut Moyen Age, the story of Isabelle illustrates one of the major themes of the time: The pure, innocent -- and impossible -- love between a musician and the daughter of a Lord.

The story itself is also a song, the musicality that runs through the narrative, in the harmony of colors and tunes that punctuate the text.

Finally, the story of Jean-Claude Servais is, according to the wishes of the author, presented at the end by Julos Beaucarne, musician of the twentieth century.

Isabelle is beautifully illustrated, but I found the plot a bit less compelling - she and her lover are, er, very young; both are swept away to the Land Of Scantily Clad Fairies, where the Fairy Queen becomes jealous of Isabelle and brings about her doom.

This was a surprising story. It's about young, innocent love, yet with a tragedy... The pictures are beautiful, though sometimes a bit confusing, as was the end. Still, I liked it.

Dit was een verrassend verhaal. Het is over jonge, onschuldige liefde, maar ook tragisch... De plaatjes zijn heel mooi, hoewel soms wat verwarrend, net als het einde. Maar ik vond het leuk.
