If you love wizards, witches, and Hogwarts, and if you are curious about the law, this book is for you. It explores the intersection of Harry Potter's adventures and the law of our society. It uses the twists and turns in the experiences of our favorite, and some not-so-favorite, characters as case examples to illustrate legal principles. For a society to function orderly and for people to live together without chaos, there must be laws and rules for people to follow. Thus, law is a critical component for any civilized society, including ours and Harry's. Law is what differentiates anarchy from order and civility. Law imposes penalties – such as jail or fines – for illegal acts. Law also provides a mechanism to settle disputes among people and protect our rights as individuals. Curious minds want to know more. This book contains 11 modules, 10 of which cover a major category of law and consist of numerous chapters that have a common theme. Examples of the modules include Criminal Law, Family Law, and School Law. The chapters within a module address a specific area of law such as Identity Theft, Child Neglect, and Bullying. Each chapter includes the following a short vignette from the Harry Potter stories, an explanation of the relevant Muggle law, and a explanation of how the law of our world would be applied to the wizarding situation.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with this book in exchange for open and honest opinions.
This is a fun way to tackle learning law while expressing your undying love of Harry Potter. The main premise is using Harry Potter character's and plot points, this book gives you a thorough examination of the law and how it would pertain to said plot points and what the consequences are. I think at times this might be a little dry for the everyday reader but would be a killer gift to someone who is both an ardent fan and studying law. Even as a study aid for passing tests in law school, this might be a useful book.
This book is a high school level overview of a range of American legal principles, using Harry Potter examples for illustration. It is clearly written and accessible, and a easy introduction to some basic concepts. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was interesting. It states right on the cover that it is not affiliated with J.K. Rowling or any entity of the Harry Potter universe; An obvious fact when names are misspelled ("Filtch" for example). Other than minor errors, it was a good way for anyone who is interested, or needs, to learn about the laws of the United States. For instance, I learned that when the time and location of Harry's meeting at the ministry is changed without his prior knowledge violates his right to due process. Also, in the second book, Ron and Harry would not be guilty of the crime of identity theft when they transform, through polyjuice, into Crabbe and Goyle. However, Hermione would when she used polyjuice to transform into Bellatrix LeStrange in the seventh.
Princess Fuzzypants here: My family loves Downton Abbey. We have the entire series and have watched it again and again. So when I saw this book that looked at the legalities of the story lines, it seemed like a fun book to read. It did provide a refresher on several of the key storylines from the very first one of inheritance to the more thorny ones of illegitimacy and everything in between. It’s an easy book to read, not weighted down by lengthy and dry exposition. In fact, it could be the kind of book the reader dips into and out of frequently. It does not need to be read in one fell swoop but could be read in bite sized nuggets. I liked the way the story background is presented and then there is a look at how the same situation would play out in the US and finally what the law of the time said in Britain. In many cases, particularly being of the female persuasion, it makes me very happy to live in this era and not back then. It truly was a man’s world. Fans of the series will enjoy the memories. I give it four purrs and two paws up.
It sometimes seems as if people are divided between those who grew up before Harry Potter and those who have grown up with Harry Potter. It is such a phenomenon that characters, situations and terms from the series are in our common parlance. Many times I have been watching a tv show or reading a book only to notice a reference to muggles or Voldemort for example bringing a smile to my face.
Law Made Fun Through Harry Potter's Adventures by Karen Morris and Bradley S. Carroll is a delightful way to study legal terms and concepts. It is a great study aid, by using familiar examples, the reader can more easily understand and retain the legal terms and concepts used.
I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it not only to students but also to those of us interested in the law. It can be useful for those us who enjoy mysteries but are sometimes curious about the differences between charges. You do not need to be from the "Harry Potter generation" to benefit from this book but I imagine at least a passing familiarity with the series will be necessary.
This book, Law Made Fun Through Harry Potter's Adventures, is very clever. I think that it will be enjoyed by fans of the series as it gives something new to think about and provides an opportunity to re-visit many episodes in the books.
The authors point out that the world of Harry Potter is governed by rules and laws. There are controls in the society as with the Ministry of Magic and the rules of Hogwarts. The authors encourage readers to think about the construct of this world and J. K. Rowling's cleverness.
The book then goes on to examine different aspects of law. I will just include the first from the book. This chapter examines the law as it applies to adoption, foster care and the treatment of children. This is looked at through what happens to Harry at the Durstleys and to Tom Riddle at an orphanage. The points of law are accurate from what I can see.
This book gives a fun way to learn about law and to enjoy those in Harry's world.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have been a fan of Harry Potter since the first book was published. I found the title of this book interesting when I was offered a copy of the book to review from Netgalley and the Publisher. This book is split into chapters, each describing an incident or fact from Harry Potter. For example, when Harry was left on the Dursley's doorstep as a baby. There is then a discussion as to how this incident compares to both Wizard/magic laws and also Muggle/human laws. As a British reader, I found that this book uses American laws, which were described well, but were not always relevant to British laws. It was still easy to understand and engaging. Some of the laws which are discussed are of an adult nature, so it is not a suitable book for younger children,in my opinion. It would appeal to a wide range of people who are fans of Harry Potter. It is a good book for having a browse, or dipping into.
Were you a fan of Downton Abbey? Having recently seen the movie, I was feeling nostalgic about all the members of the Crawley clan and those around them. This book provides a unique way to spend more time with those who are connected to the property.
In this title, the authors examine the ways in which the law influenced what happened in the world of the Crawleys. For example, readers learn about inheritance as it applied to Matthew with explorations of primogeniture and who can inherit when a property is entailed. There are sections on other ways to inherit as well such as how Matthew inherited Lavinia's property. Laws that affected children born outside of marriage, grounds for divorce, crime, conscientious objection in war (Thomas) and more are here.
This is a fun way to learn more about the law while spending time with well loved characters. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this read in exchange for an honest reivew.
Fun, informative read in a great context - lives up to its title
I enjoyed this book. I liked the way the author related parts of the Harry Potter stories to both wizardry and muggle law. I didn't recall the details of the Potter stories but the author summarizes the relevant part of the story well. The legal aspects were explained very clearly and it was a fun and informative read. The book lives up to its title. Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley for review purposes.
I found this to be a really interesting book. It is a basic level law book, using characters and such from the Harry Potter world. It makes it easier for people, like high school students, to learn things about the law. in both the "Muggle" world and in the Wizarding world. The author used different events that happened in the Harry Potter books and explained how it would relate to the law of each world. I found the book to be written well, and the ideas presented well. I really liked it. If you are a Harry Potter fan, I think you will like this!
Interesting enough book that highlights aspects of US law in an entertaining way. Not something you would read in one sitting, but a book that is nice to have on the shelf, if you are a Harry Potter fan. However, if you are not familiar with the world of Harry Potter and are just curious, this book is just going to confuse you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.
This was a really fun book! Using Harry Potter characters and events, this book gives a thorough look at real life laws and legal consequences (for example: child neglect, identity theft, and disorderly conduct). Going through, one forgets how many laws were broken throughout the series! It’s perfect for any HP fan, and those with an interest in law. You'll definitely learn a thing or two.
Thank you to Karen Morris and Bradley S. Carroll for providing this review copy.
I can read anything Harry Potter. When given a chance to understand law through Harry Potter excerpts, I was all over it.
This book gives a glimpse into US law. It was still enlightening. I knew some of the stuff but some of it was new. Because of the short entries and Harry Potter, I was able to move through a somewhat boring subject for me. I like the way this book tries to teach us in a fun new way.
Fans of Downton Abbey will love this deeper look into the show! After reminiscing about certain situations and how the law was at that time, I'm so glad for the changes that have happened since then, but it was fun to break down how things differ. This was the perfect read for binge-watching to show to prepare for the film and I loved the memories it brought back, although I'll definitely be looking at certain scenes in a different way from now on, lol.
A collection of rather perfunctory entries on legal concepts with forced analogies to something in the books. And keeps talking about US law as though it was universal (while claiming to discuss books with a British setting)
Entertaining book! I think Downton fans will interested in reading this. Karen Morris had done her research! Great work! I received a Kindle arc from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
This book is good for those whose curious with how many Harry Potter character do something illegal. It offer us a new perspective from the Harry Potter series and open our eye about the illegal things in magical world.
It best to read this one case by one case so you wont be overwhelmed or bored.
