Leigh Koslow Mystery #5

Never Tease a Siamese

Rate this book
Lilah Murchison never cared about anyone besides her prize-winning cats. Unfortunately, the feeling was mutual...

When wealthy socialite Lilah Murchison dies in an airplane crash, the locals in Pittsburgh's North Boros shed no tears. The reclusive millionaire and rumored black widow was detested by almost everyone, including her own son, who expects to share his inheritance with the throng of Siamese that inhabit his mother's dreary mansion. But when Lilah's latest will delivers the bulk of her cash to another, unidentified heir, the cat litter flies.

The only local who seems genuinely sorry about Ms. Lilah's passing is Leigh Koslow's veterinarian father, who hasn't a clue how the death of his long-term client could be connected to the bizarre series of break-ins and threats now plaguing his clinic. But daughter Leigh has a hunch that Lilah's mystery heir may be hiding right under their noses, and wishes she could prove it before the entire staff runs screaming out the door. Because someone wants the past to stay buried—even if it means adding a little extra to the grave.

This is basically like a Nancy Drew novel geared towards adults - super smart heroine with no flaws, perfect boyfriend/husband, friends with lucky connections, etc. It's a decent read, but nothing special. In addition, the prose is clunky at times. The book reads easy, but every so often the author sprinkles in some big words plucked straight from the thesaurus which are jarring to come across in the midst of simple sentences. The storyline is fine but nothing to gush over - all in all, a decent day read. Honestly, I only read it because I want to take it off my shelves and donate it, and I thought I'd reread it before doing so - I first got this book freshman yr hs I think, and I liked it then (because young me loved Nancy Drew! also cat on the front cover? sold).

I started this charming tale in snatched moments in waiting rooms, so I admit my attention wasn’t fully on the story. Therefore, I started the entire book over again. I’m really glad I did, too. I’d missed nuances and subtle clues while being distracted by the bustling around me. I found comfort in visiting another world, which is what a good book will do for me.

Leigh Koslow works in advertising, but that primary job is not the focus of her attention ever since Adith Rhodis knocked on her window very early one Saturday morning. Mrs. Rhodis’s grandson is being held in jail for breaking into Leigh’s father’s veterinarian clinic. He’s been accused of stealing drugs, and Mrs. Rhodis is adamant that he would never do that. Could Leigh please look into the matter?

Leigh once worked with her father in his clinic, so she visits him and stumbles onto some facts that don’t jibe with stealing drugs. Looks like a catnapping was the primary mission, and the target the Siamese owned by wealthy Lilah Murchison. Only the news has just come in that Mrs. Murchison’s private plane went down and she is suspected dead. With an expansive estate and 23 Siamese cats to be cared for, the will is read prematurely to assist in managing her affairs. The cats inherit the mansion until all have passed on. Murchison’s one son is livid, but the real shocker comes when the will says the estate is left not to the son bearing her name but to Lilah’s one and only blood heir who will need to come forward to claim their place. Chaos breaks lose while Leigh attempts to figure out just who that mysterious heir might be.

Sometimes believing that amateur sleuths can be nosy enough or intelligent enough or find as many bodies as they do can be a problem. That isn’t the case here. Leigh had a legitimate reason to become involved. Her continuing involvement was believable as well, as vandals attacked her father’s clinic with warning notices not to reveal the truth, as his role as caretaker for the cats kept him involved in the wealthy woman’s estate.

I found the pace of clues being revealed was also quite credible. While Leigh’s thoughts were shared with the reader and sometimes reiterated facts we already knew, these served as brief review. New clues were found steadily. This is a delightful cozy with surprise plot twists and just the right amount of action to move things along without becoming breathless.

I haven’t read the previous Leigh Koslow mysteries by Edie Claire – Never Buried, Never Sorry, Never Preach Past Noon, or Never Kissed Goodnight. There were some vague references made to what may have gone on in other books, but I did not find them distracting. Rather, I found myself curious as to what might have happened in those previous installments.

You might be wondering if the intended victim of the foiled catnapping held any clues that might solve the dilemma of the mysterious heir. If you understand “felinese” you might have your answer. I’ll never tell.

Leigh Koslow, now wife of now-Councilman Harmon, once again becomes embroiled in a murder investigation following the apparent death of local socialite Lilah Murchison in a plane crash.
Mrs Murchison was a woman who thought more of cats than people. Leigh's vet father has one of her Siamese at the surgery, a cat whose stomach holds secrets that some people might kill to keep secret.
Her will causes further problems as it promises to leave the bulk of her estate to an unnamed 'natural heir' who needs to come forward with proof that they are her son or daughter within five years.
In the meantime the vet surgery is receiving death threats.
Once more this is a marvellous read, very deftly plotted and managed to lead me up the wrong path on a couple of occasions.
It suffers only in a slight lack of the humour that was a strong part of the previous volumes. This is partly due to the fact that Leigh's eccentric extended family, her mother and Aunts, are barely seen, and we are left with a cast of more serious people. Leigh's new best friend Mrs Adith, an elderly woman with a thirst for gossip, makes up for that to a certain extent.
Going against the grain for US cosy mysteries, Edie is also happy to include minorities in the mix. There are actually black people in these books and a charmingly drawn character with Down Syndrome.
The ending is a bit rushed. One feels that the suspense could have been extended a little, but heyho. It's a small quibble.
A good read. Well written. Keeps you guessing.

This book was pretty good. Not amazing, but entertaining. Aside from this book, I am not familiar with Edie Claire's writing, or the escapades of her character Leigh Koslow. I picked it up because I love cats. That being said, the cats were more of a side-show than anything else. The book basically revolves around Leigh Koslow, who is a quirky, energetic, nosy woman who can't help herself when it comes to solving mysteries. The writing is VERY easy to read, and if you have the time, you could probably finish it in one sitting. Ms. Claire also does a pretty good job with "cliff hangers" at the end of each chapter -- I definitely wanted to keep reading to see what happened. My only real complaint is the lack of character development. All of the characters stayed the same throughout the book and there was no real growth in any of them. Leigh Koslow is also a little too much of a cookie-cutter heroine for me as well. I didn't really care much about any of them or what happened to them. So, all in all, entertaining for light reading, but that's about it.

Leigh is helping her dad at the animal clinic with a cat who appears to have swallowed something. When it turns out to be a key, Leigh keeps it, wondering what it has to do with the woman who owns the cat. When the plane the woman is on goes down and her will is read, her son and his obnoxious wife are disappointed to find that most of the money is going to her cats instead of to him; and also to a previously unknown child referred to as her "only blood relative". The search for the mysterious relative begins, and the animal clinic begins receiving threats, since Leigh's veterinarian father is the person selected to choose the cat charities to which the money will go. After a mysterious reappearance, a couple of murders, and the usual jumping-to-conclusions of Leigh, a convoluted story finally ties up everything. Leigh is nearly as annoying here as in the previous books, although her marriage and possible pregnancy are mellowing her - just a bit.

A good mystery with some twists and turns as per usual of the Leigh Koslow mysteries. The timeline of the past which Leigh must patch together to solve the mystery, I found a little confusing. I wish Warren, Cara and Maura were more prevalent in this installment. I mean, Leigh marries the man of her dreams abs then barely ever sees him! I understand that as a politician, he is busy but more often than not, I feel it’s more Leigh missing out on seeing him in her desperation to solve the mystery. I do however, understand her need to solve this one to protect her father and the staff at his vet clinic.
My other issue is that Leigh drops some very big news on Warren at the end of the book and we never get to see his reaction! The book just ends!

While I continue to enjoy the occasional Pittsburgh references and landmarks (“nebby”, haha!), this story was kind of confusing. It was difficult to follow some of the alignments, history of some characters, and story development. As the story was nearing it’s conclusion, the explanations became surprising - almost out of the blue.
The setup for what comes next definitely was no surprise!
Because of the confusing nature of the story development, took off 2 stars. Rather than simply enjoying the story development, the frustration of trying to follow family lines almost caused me to stop reading the book altogether.

This was a good cozy. I hadn't read any others in this series, but I didn't feel lost reading this one. I probably missed some backstory on the characters but it didn't take anything away from the story. It was a good mystery without a lot of filler. I especially liked that the main character is married so there was no dumb romance. My two quibbles were that they spelled brooch wrong twice, and there wasn't enough of the cats, especially considering they are part of the title.

The mystery was okay but the heroine was not wholly believable. Leigh Koslow is a veterinarian’s daughter, an ad agency owner, and recently married. She tries to find out who killed the wealthy owner of a now rich cat. Some of these amateur sleuths are just too foolish at times for my satisfaction.

Book #5 in this series. It is helpful but not absolutely necessary to have read other books in this series. This mystery involves Leigh's Dad, who runs an animal care clinic. There are several red herrings in this one which makes it a little harder to figure out what happened and who did what to whom.

Another fun entry in the Leigh Koslow collection. These books are consistently entertaining, with charming, quirky characters and inventive, unique plots. A great read when you want entertainment and escape. I plan to read the whole series.

A good fun, convoluted mystery full of twists and turns and red herrings. I enjoyed the cast of characters and what's not to love about a crazy cat lady, especially when she's a millionaire. Looking forward to the next book.

A fun and enjoyable read that keeps you guessing. This was the last of the series until digital books when the author picked up with Never con a Corgi. It starts the next set of books and they are set 10 years after Never Tease a Siamese.

Good murder mystery. It’s hard to explain because as you read, you get lots more details and learn how EVERYONE is connected. A little hard to start, but then it gets interesting (like all murder mysteries). Keeps you wanting to find out more!

VERY entertaining ..... Even good for teens and almost-teens.

I jumped into this author late, but plan to go back to the beginning-and then share with my 13 & 15 year old nieces as I finish books one-three, plus.

An easy read, with curious story line...not too complex, but keeps you guessing... made the book more than just enjoyable. The characters were easy to follow..not so many that I got confused or had to keep returning to earlier pages to determine who was who and what their role was.

Coming in late to the series I understand, now, that I was missing information. And likely having read the previous five books first would have cleared up some questions, as I found, right to the very end I felt that something was coming - or missing - and that there was more to the Vet's role in the story other than location and use of his office staff. I felt he was important, but didn't get the satisfaction of him being more involved in the story line. My only bummer about how the story ended based on how it started.

VERY much enjoyed the read. Light, but wanted to keep reading...until done!

One particular thing that made me happy was the avoidance of cursing and sweating in every other sentence or paragraph, even when the character was entitled by demeanor to do so. The authors handling of these situations was clever....and while I know my nieces have heard curse/swear words before the distinct exclusion of them in this story, while implying they were there, may help the girls find a new way to relate a tale of their own without finding the need to quote what was spoken. I know it has helped remind me.

An enjoyable read with characters that are both familiar and lovable. I do have trouble understanding how a self employed advertizing copy writer can spend so much time away from her job playing detective (she is a pretty good detective) and still pay her bills. I guess it helps that she finally realized that Warren is a really desirable guy and married him. Her childhood friends and family carry her. If one of her best friends wasn't a big, tough police detective that not only suspected her interference but frequently took action to insure compliance. Her background as an assistant at her father's veterinary clinic is just another excuse to help there and avoid creative copy writing work. The visual descriptions throughout the stories and the suspenseful scenes makes you want to reign in her native curiosity an be especially sympathetic to the challenges that her new husband, Warren, has to deal with. This is my forth book in the series and I'm still eager for more (just glad I'm not a long suffering husband, father, mother or friend in her life).

The fifth book, Never Tease a Siamese, wraps up the original Leigh Koslow series. A long time client of the Leigh's father has died leaving millions of dollars to her cats and anonymous child and her son is not happy. When the clinic starts getting death threats Leigh worries that someone thinks her father knows who the heir is and so she sets out to clear up the matter once and for all.

The last book in the original series is not quite as strong as the others. The plot was fine, if a bit convoluted but it lacked the inclusion of all the normal characters. There were only brief appearances of the rest of the fam including Randall, Frances and Cara. I did like that Adith Rhodis (the neighbour from the first book who's married to Bud) made an appearance but I missed catching up with everyone else. Even Warren and Maura were less prominent than usual which sucked. Still it was a decent read and engaging enough. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

These books just keep getting better. This one might be my favorite. It has enough twists to keep you guessing, cute cats to fawn over, and a character who maintains her independence even after getting married (much to the chagrin of her husband, who would probably like her to quit getting involved in murder investigations). I was a little worried that Leigh and Warren's marriage might ruin the dynamic of the series, but I should have known she wouldn't be content to quit her adventurous sleuthing for a life of wedded bliss. This book was a ton of fun and I can't wait for the next book in the series (no really, I can't wait, I'm already going through withdrawal symptoms and I just finished reading this book five minutes ago...Edie Claire, please have mercy on your poor fans and keep writing your fun, witty mysteries).

Another Leigh Koslow mystery. Unfortunately I missed 2 in the series. This one was excellent. I was surprised at the ending, the perpetrator came as a surprise but looking back it was not out of left field. A siamese is a "wool eater", that is he likes to eat fabric. He is the siamese of a wealthy lady who has presumably been killed in a plane crash. Except she wasn't. When her will is read, revealing the existence of an first born and cuts her son out the will if the first born reveals himself. Things really start to happen, death threats, staff being too scared to work. The cat owner found murdered in her own house.....I enjoy this series and will have to go back and find the two I missed.

In 2001 I read her fourth book Never Kissed Goodnight and was waiting for the new book to come out in a year. When that did not happen I was really sad. Then in my searches on line I found out that a new one was coming out and oh how happy I was. Just finished reading Never Tease a Siamese and I was not disappointed. The story takes place in a small town outside of Pittsburgh call Avalon. When reading these books I can visualize the area and it makes the story that much more fun to read. I hope that she will continue this series and not wait another 6-7 year because Leigh is now pregnant and I want more!!!

I decided to re-read this series, since it had been so long and I wanted to read the last couple of books. It was fun reading them all over again. I read a lot while traveling and these were the best books to do that with. I enjoy the two main characters Leigh Koslow and her cousin/"sister from another mister" Cara. Nice mix of humor, mystery and suspense.
(Another great story in the Leigh Koslow series. I love how the story line is like a roller coaster ride. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another twist and then turn. Outstanding and ready for the final installment. - original review)

This was kind of a convoluted story and hard to keep track of everything but it was a good story. This book is number 5 in the Leigh Koslow Mystery (cozy) series.

I bought the book at my library (library discard), and even though I really like to read series books in order I read this. (So I didn't have any of the backstory of the characters). I am a cat lover so the title enticed me as well as the pretty cat on the cover (and yes, I will judge a book and buy it or not for its cover).

Quite a bit of the story revolves around the protagonist's father's business--he is a veterinarian.

It was a fairly good book, quick read, and I will probably read more of the series.

This was really good. I enjoyed the premise of an unknown offspring that could turn up to claim an inheritance, but the ending was quite a twist. A really good mystery that did keep me involved. I also discovered that this was the original end of the series - until ebooks made further books not only possible but easily available without the great outlay of publishing costs. I am looking forward to the next book to see what 10 years of change does to the storyline. A great read, and one I recommend.

This was ok.... A siamese is brought to the vet's after eating fabric... An heiress dies & leaves her estate to the vet..... A house is broken into.... Someone tries to steal the siamese from the vet.... One of the vet tech's is getting death threats..... The family is fighting over the estate......

The vet's daughter is the "sleuth"......and is almost killed by the bad guy..and you'll never guess who it is (or at least I didn't)!

A very simplistic read....not a great mystery, borders on "cozy".
