Earth is invaded by a collection of alien animals—both predators and prey—as well as extraterrestrial militias of varying technological capabilities. Governments fall; cities are overrun. The landscape grows wild, alien forces attempt to carve out zones of control, and humanity no longer sits atop the food chain One young man named Trevor Stone finds himself alone and afraid in this chaotic new world when he meets a strange old man who grants three gifts. The first, a well-stocked isolated estate perfect for surviving the initial invasion. The second, the ability to command the fiercest breeds of dogs. The third, access to the collective genetic memories of humanity. It seems he is all part of a plan; a plan that has set 'rules' to this invasion and one that blurs the line between hero and villain. Brainycat's 5 Bs: [note that this score is for the first three chapters only] boobs: 0 blood: 0 bombs: 0 bondage: 0 blasphemy: 0
I gave this book three chapters before giving up. It's not badly written or edited, but it's... so very average. The style is very expository, with cliche'd characters rolling out their role's lines right on cue. The invasion of earth by some manner of extraterrestrials is beginning, but the lead character muddles around without any real interaction with his fiance, family or the events of the world - things happen, we hear about them through stilted dialogue and a couple of unimaginative descriptions, and then... I don't know what happens next, I gave up and started reading other things.
The author may have been trying to paint the main protagonist as a self-absorbed, not especially smart Average Joe much like Shaun from the movie Shaun of the Dead, but there was so little insight and the complete lack of incisive wit guarantees that kind of deadpan sarcasm won't work. Instead, the whole setup just seems foggy, ill conceived and not very fleshed out. I hope I just missed the point, rather than the author being lazy. There were a couple of lines that were supposed to be funny, but I have an odd sense of humor - I like very dry sarcasm and unexpected turns towards the macabre, so the jokes were totally lost on me.
This would be a great book for readers who don't expect to be challenged, or who are looking for some network tv grade filler to fill up a couple of hours.
Outstanding! Best book l've read in a long while. Great story telling. Very interesting characters and great depiction of the action. This is one you will have trouble putting down.
I don't want to give anything away, but the story line is just excellent! The author has a great way of telling a story. He tells it like an adult with reactions that are adult. You don't want to associate with the main character at first because he's just like most people, he's ordinary. But he has some very interesting talents that don't show up until he really gets challenged. And boy does he get challenged!
The author, Mr. DeCosmo, has an outstanding imagination. I haven't read many books lately with such wild scenery and characters. I just love the way the lead character, Stone, builds his first Army. Who would have thought of this. Read this book to find out what I'm talking ABOUT!
I've actually already read the second book by now. I just can't put them down. Great military science fiction with out a bunch of geewhiz stuff (although there is plenty of that in these books)!
This series is the reason I have a Kindle Fire or any other Kindle!
Its strange, I read a few reviews and they seemed negative. I find that surprising. Sure, some parts I found a bit boring, but the majority was very unique, exciting, and a breath of a time where morals existed.
At first when I read this book I was wondering, Okay where is this going? But I found it fast moving and gripping.
The gifts that were given were different, but they made sense. Being Superman can make books boring. So the gifts had limitations but it only enhanced the story.
One thing I really liked was the relationship between the protagonist and the love interest. He didn't treat her like a piece of meat, which a lot of books like to do to their characters. Instead they had a relationship and not some cheap one-night-stand. Besides there was still a lot of actions.
I don't remember their being any boobs, but there definitely was no bondage. I think there is also swearing later in the series with a lot of blood, bombs, and fight scenes. In some parts those who struggle with reading what us poor lesser beings read may find it not humorous.
Was this jumbled? Where their cliche? Is this book terrific? Yes! To all of them, but jumbling was well done and the cliches were slight phantoms that appeared for a short time.
Wow, how I managed to get through this convoluted mess, I'll never know. It's like the author had 10 different book ideas and tried to cram them all into one book. The first 20% of the book is painful to get through. The "Old Man" comes off as annoying not mysterious, as I suspect the author intended. The 3 gifts are far fetched, but lets face it kind of stupid as well. And all the characters follow age old stereotypes to the tee. I will not be wasting my time on the next book in the series...
2 stars Why ? Because i have a low tolerance for stupidity. Would have been 1 star but even with the stupidity i liked the premise. Would like to see someone write this without the stupidity in it.
This is a monster of a book, 13k locations on the Kindle. The story is not bad, but the book itself suffers from a serious lack of proofreading and editing. With some good editing, it could drop to below 10k locations without losing too much of the storyline. There are some pretty bad gaffes in the writing, for instance
They found Tolbert outside on his hands and needs coughing
The formatting is Ok, except for the indents, which have a mind of their own: and the italics sometimes don't get switched off and run on for pages.
As for the story, there are some cool monsters and the heroes beat them most of the time, but I didn't like the way the author handled the romance in the story. The ending was a bit flat, but that was probably for the lead up to the follow on book. I will definitely buy it, but I doubt whether I'll read it in one go if the editing and formatting is the same as this one.
PS: I would have rated this 4* if the formatting/editing was better.
The story is... well.. so and so. Within days chaos breaks out while alien monsters (likely their equivalent of bears, wolfs, deer, rats,...) appear everywhere, followed by the real aliens that can think and use weapons.
It doesn't get explained how they can just suddenly appear. People think its a hoax or joke right up until everything breaks down and most of the population gets killed of.
The story might have been better if i wouldn't have been stopped by the god awful way the author wrote. It seems the book never once saw the hand of a proofreader. Write whatever comes to mind, no matter if its a real sentence and go on writing until its finished. Then just dump it on the salespages and sell it. From time to time you even get italics in the mittle of the text. Punctuation mark appear where they don't belong, pretty much like the alien creatures. Or they don't appear where they should and the first thing you notice is that some word or another starts with an upper case letter.
I've read around half the book and given up. Each time i remotely manage to sink into the story and experience it, i get thrown out again.
As a stand alone this is tolerable almost as a game to come up with new alien descriptions every 20 pages. The hero is indestructible (yet reluctant) and everyone else must die. I've only read a few other military/sci-fi writers: John Ringo--(genius inventor saves many); and Neil Asher--numerous titles that are vastly superior to Decosmo. It's part of a five volume series and I can't imagine how there could be any significant variation in further reading. I hate that I'm mildly curious!
A good read, starts out slow and a bit strange but gets better as is progresses. Some might confuse it with horror/monsters and although there are bad things killing and eating people it turns out to be a real good SciFi story with multifaceted characters
