PROTAGONIST: Abe Glitsky, homicide detective
SETTING: San Francisco
SERIES: #5 of 19
RATING: 4.5
WHY: After an Irish wake, a drunken mob lynches a black man. A photographer captures one of them, Kevin Shea, holding on to the victim's legs. All hell breaks loose and there are riots all over San Francisco. Everyone is demanding that the police find Shea; it's a real witch hunt. The trouble is that he may be innocent. Homicide lieutenant Abe Glitsky just wants to find the truth. He's challenged by his bosses and various politicians to bring Shea in, but Abe fears that will lead to Shea's death. This book was well written and very thought provoking. I did find the conclusion to be a bit of a copout though.
