E.T.A. Hoffmann war Beamter des preußischen Staates, Kapellmeister in Bamberg und Dresden, ehe er in Berlin zum erfolgreichen Schriftsteller und einflußreichen Juristen avancierte. Rüdiger Safranski beschränkt sich in seiner Biographie nicht auf Leben und Werk E.T.A. Hoffmanns, sondern er erzählt zugleich von der ganzen Epoche mit ihren literarischen Salons und den politischen Wirren in Preußen.

Ending this brilliant biography was like saying farewell to an esteemed, dazzling friend. Not that I would have liked to know this 'friend'. I think his scepticism and great intelligence as well as talent for mimicry and drawing caricatures, may have made him not an easy person.
It was so sad to learn, how this sensitive, intelligent and many talented man had to experience more downs than ups and mostly through petty, less intelligent people. Familiar with a few stories that later inspired composers like Tchaikovsky as well as a great many authors, this account ensures I will try find and read more of his stories, as well as music he composed.
The only thing that was perhaps missing, was more about Mischa. But then: this is a biography about Hoffmann, not his wife who somehow survived him by about three decades.

Deze biografie is kort geleden in het Nederlands vertaald. Safransky is een goede schrijver en dat zie je ook in dit boek. Ik vind persoonlijk de persoon Hoffmann niet zo interessant. Hij was schrijver, tekenaar en componist, maar vooral beroemd als schrijver (o.a. veel sprookjes zoals b.v. de Notenkraker). Hij leefde van 1776 tot 1824 en dus in een politiek zeer bewogen tijd in Europa. Met de veroveringen en later de nederlaag van Napoleon. Cultureel gezien was het in Duitsland de tijd van de romantiek. Zoals Safransky de verhalen en romans van Hoffmann beschrijft geeft het mij geen aanleiding ze te gaan lezen. Te gezocht en te barok of gothisch. Ik heb zijn muziek op youtube opgezocht en dat is wel aardig, maar haalt het niet bij zijn tijdgenoten als Mozart, Beethoven, Gluck. Kortom een zeer goed geschreven biografie van een voor mij niet zo interessante persoon.

in-cre-di-ble read, Safranski knows, as always, how to give an amazing view of Hoffmann, relating it to the zeitgeist and to a certain psychology. I am amazed by this book and will keep it for a long time as one of my favourite biographies!
