Latonia is convinced that the only way to help her mischievous BFF Toni get her dream man (yes, they share the same name) is to pretend to be Toni and travel to India to meet Toni’s uncle Lord Branscombe who sent for Toni to punish her for almost causing the death of one of her admirers (the guy didn’t take Toni’s rejection well and tried to kill himself - very scandalous).

Soooo Latonia pretends to be Toni. Lord Branscombe is pissed off the entire time because he’s embarrassed by his niece’s bad reputation AND is very confused that Toni isn’t acting as terrible as he expected. She’s so sweet and kind and smart that he’s actually falling in love... WITH HIS OWN NIECE.

Yeah. That’s what earned this book the one-star reading. The fact that it was made clear that he did start to fall for her romantically BEFORE Latonia was forced to reveal she really isn’t his niece—just Toni’s BFF. No exciting missions nor almost death-by-poisoning could make up for that little fact. Also, Lord Branscombe was the worssssst. I literally thought he was an old man until halfway through the book LOL. So much for romance.

Not one of her better ones.

Deception trope. Cousins switching places to deceive the guardian of the richer one.

The guardian punishes the heroine by brining her to India, intending to deprive her of parties and socializing since he got word that she has been behaving badly.

So he is surprised when the heroine it totally cooperative. Horror or horros, he finds himself in love w his niece who is his ward.

Thankfully he is not related to the heroine.

We are only told this at the end and frankly the author didnt do a good job of showing them falling in love w each other.

Almost identical in their golden-haired, blue-eyed beauty and similarly named, cousins Antonia ‘Toni’ Combe and Latonia Hythe are nevertheless very different personalities.
Desperate to avoid a journey to India forced on her by her stern uncle, Kenrick Combe, the new Lord Branscombe, and which would prevent her marrying the man she desperately loves , the flirtatious and capricious Toni beseeches her cousin to take her place as her Uncle Kenrick has not seen Toni for many years.
So conscientious Latonia nervously accepts the pretence, assumes the role of her cousin and then sets sail with her stern protector for India.
Berated and frowned upon by his Lordship for her cousin’s ‘misdeeds’, Latonia nevertheless looks forward to the adventure of visiting and seeing India, until her deception is revealed to his Lordship’s fury!
But, when she overhears a sinister plot to kill him, she rushes in the night to warn him and is rewarded with passionate kiss, she suddenly knows that it is not hate but love that burns in her heart – love for a man who must surely despise her forever –

The moon had risen and everything was enveloped with a light that seemed to come from the gods themselves.

"It is so. . . lovely!" Latonia breathed.

"And so are you!" Lord Banscombe replied softly. She felt his arm go around her as he said, "This is where I thought you would want to spend your honeymoon." She felt his lips on her hair before he said, "Long before last night I knew I loved you. . ."

"Y. . . you. . . really. . . mean that?"

"Let me convince you." For a moment he looked down at her as if he must impress her beauty on his mind for all time, then his lips were on hers. Then there was nothing else, not even the moon and the stars, but only his arms and his lips. . .

The girl is so incapable of doing anything that she hasn't been ordered to do! And the one time she showed any kind of initiative, she ends up fainting! And the guy is so harsh and cold, that it is impossible to explain her love for him as anything other than Stockholm-syndrom.

Oh, and if you were wondering if the Indians are portrayed correctly or not, then I can tell you that even when they speak what we are told is their native language, they still speak in broken sentences! Because, of course Racism...

I did not like this story. I mean the pace of the story was very slow and suddenly they fall in love in the most unconvincing way.
