A comprehensive guide to mentoring that lays out excellent principles of leadership and discipleship. Packed with tremendous insight and candor, Mentoring Paradigms brings us back to focus on the fundamentals of living out our purpose as leaders of today's generation. - Rev. Dr. Kong Hee
Great book on leadership, mentoring and discipleship. Short chapters packed with wisdom. This book manages to be concise but not shallow. Great topics to continue pondering and applying, no matter how seasoned a leader
What a heart piercing and eye opening literature this book is, thus I highly recommend for you to buy it. The whole principles of this book are written with a godly experience of Rev. Edmund Chan and thus I realized that this is that we must take time to devour, one step at a time.
I personally loved the reflection on Theology done at the Appendix part of the literature. That changed my perception and fundamental truth on what I should and how I should view God Himself. For those who have a glance to see it a book store, that's the part I highly recommend that you should read.
I pray that many more leaders may receive and hear the principles of this book. This is a book I realized now that is not meant to be a one time reflection but a lifestyle of reflection if God wills and I also pray that I may be able to apply my learning diligently and I know I can only do so with the help of the Holy Spirit!
This book is not meant to provide all of the answers. Crafted over time and many different experiences, the focus is more on meditations than providing a "1,2,3" guide to mentoring. As such, the reader needs to approach this not as a comprehensive work but in bits and pieces (especially broken into the three headings). There are some nuggets of wisdom in this and it has led to good discussion when reading with other people but as a whole, I felt like it was lacking direction and was not really appropriately titled.
Took me quite some time to finish this book because I don't want to just skim through it. Oh, how many times did I put this book down to pause and reflect because Edmund's words just hit me straight into the core. Discipleship isn't just a programme but it's a lifestyle, and it requires your life, your heart and your commitment to get into the act of it. This is a great short read especially to those leaders who want to be equipped and awakened when it comes to their leading journey.
Thank you Edmund Chan. I'm blessed
A clear, concise and in-depth book on mentoring, discipling and leadership. I would give it 4.5/5 but the reason why it’s not 5/5 is that I wished to see more content linked back to the Bible. The appendix has an essay on Theology which is actually worth buying the book alone. Would recommend to anyone who wishes to grow as a leader.
One of the greatest books I have ever read. Small chapters encourages the reader to go at it. Renewed all my thinking. I can truly say this is a Word based leadership the Church should really concentrate on. We lack leaders in the Church.
Church crammed into a business book—a thin gruel of platitudes, word plays, and alterations, which give the impression of depth but supply only empty calories. There's some truth in there, but so weakly elaborated as to become trite. Look elsewhere for substance.
We judge and pride ourselves upon our influence and accomplishments.
Who we are, what we do when no one sees, form the substructure of our life.
It is the substance of a leader that ultimately defines the leader.
Our status in leadership refers to the titles that we have and the positions that we hold. The stature of leadership comprises 2 aspects: our Credibility (how others view us), and our Confidence (how we view ourselves). But of far greater importance is our substance (how God views us). Envy and jealousy are not the same. Envy is desiring what others have because we don’t have it. Jealousy happens when others have what we have-but more!
We don’t mind making sacrifices but we are afraid of fully surrendering ourselves to God. We forget that surrender is not about giving up; it’s about giving in to God.
When we are more enamored of POWER than of Love, we have lost our focus. True spiritual power is released from on high to build His Kingdom.
Grace reveals the very heart and nature of God. He wants us to be grace-receivers and grace-releases. Mentoring the spirit of grace helps people to grow in Christ-Likeness.
Wise mentors impart worthy values that have been a steady compass in their lives. At the heart of authentic discipleship is a deep devotional life. We cannot pass on what we have not practiced.
When leader operates by design, he is doing something with purpose and intentionality. It’s carrying out an action knowing clearly why you are doing it, and what, by that action, you seek to achieve. A leader operates by default is the opposite.
Unless people see vision being modeled by their leaders, the visions will not be embraced fully. Lead by examples; not simply by exhortation.
No matter how competent a person may be, the ministry will be at risk if the character is flawed. Never compromise on character!
A good person with good character does not always produce good work. Except for the purpose of growth and development, there has to be a match in abilities and role.
Christ is All in All. If Christ is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all
