Lavinia Lewis

Lavinia discovered reading at an early age and could always be found with her nose in a book. She loved getting lost in a fantasy world even then. When her parents bought her a typewriter for Christmas at aged eleven, her fate was sealed. She spent hours dreaming up characters and creating stories. Not a lot has changed.

Lavinia is a Welsh Valley girl who has lived all over the UK. Today she lives at home in the small village in which she grew up, just outside of Cardiff, Wales, but ask her again tomorrow and it could very well be somewhere different. She has travelled extensively to places as far and wide as Africa, Asia, Australia, North and Central America and most of Europe. Although some of her books are set in Texas she has never stepped foot in the state but plans to spend time there in the near future. She is a proud Brit, but feels quite at home when visiting the grand ol’ USofA.

Although Lavinia is a huge fan of the romance genre, particularly M/M she will admit to reading anything and everything. She loves horror, a good thriller and if a book has the capacity to make her cry, well, all the better. She loves a gritty, angst-ridden, gut-wrenching story, but is more than happy to settle in with a lighter, fluffier tale. She loves a happy ending and the characters in her books have thus far been lucky enough to find one. She can’t guarantee that will always be the case. She has two cats and wouldn’t part with them for the world, even though they make her sneeze.

Lavinia also writes M/F romance under the pseudonym Amy Armstrong.

Great story with intriguing characters. The story flowed smoothly with lots of action and a few twists it kept my attention until the end. I loved the two M/C's, they were perfect for each other.

I really enjoyed this one. It was pretty cute and it had quite a bit of suspense.

I loved both of the MCs. Luke was so adorable. He kinda switches off from being a strong character before meeting Mark to becoming timid to becoming strong again when the story is over. He's spunky and cute when he does this adorable blushing thing when anything related to being intimate is said or done. I found it hilarious and then there's his snoring. Mark loved to rag on him about it and Luke would always counter with he doesn't snore. I found that funny and cute, too ^_^. I loved Mark. He's the big, bad, strong (alpha) mate and all he wants is to keep his little Luke safe and love on him as much as he can. These two actually talk some after they find out they are mates, even though neither of them are gay, so it was nice to get a bit of background on them.

Let me just say how craaazy Ethan is. Like, really. Major psycho alert. I noticed it right off the bat and I thought he was dangerous from the start even though Luke was adamant that he wasn't. Lol. Still, he made the story interesting. With all his 'Luke's mine' talk and his attempts to get Luke for himself were what made this story have so much suspense.

There was some head hopping between the characters. Not enough to deter me and make it annoying but enough for me to notice it a few times. There was also a tad too much sex for my liking (I just wasn't in a sex reading mood. :-/ I know horrible, right?) Aside from that, I liked the story but was left with a few questions.

All in all, it was a good book. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next in the series. Definitely recommended.

I did it to myself, I wanted to read this one...
I always finish books or at least try to, but I didn't get to finish this one..I just couldn't do it, which is saying a lot!
Within the first 10 pages you have again all the tropes ...uhg, I don't mind tropes, a book needs something to keep it moving but please please please do they all need to be in there?

Totally disapointed. With the plot of two straight men finding out they were mated I was looking forward to a indepth look at thier feelings. To be drawn to each other as mates but repelled by the thought of physical contact. Instead of thoughts in turmoil I got straight to it sex. The rest of the plot was too rushed. No sooner did something happen than it was resolved.

A great idea that for me never fullfilled its promise.

This was a sweet shifter-mate story and I really enjoyed it. Plus it was gay-for-you without any angst! Luke and Mark were so cute and...umm...HOT! (For two straight guys, they had lots and lots of hot gay sex!!!)

Looking forward to reading Cody's  story next. Ooh...and Kelan's too; he had such a great sense of humor.

This started out so good, but quickly became absolutely ridiculous. I got so tired of the silliness with Ethan that I left a terrible review. Actually, this book wasn’t that bad I was just fed up with too much repetition of plot. So I’ve come back to change my assessment. Sorry, I just got a little frustrated with Ethan returning for the third time.

This was strangely sweet even though it has a number of things in it that I'm not a fan of, namely insta-love especially in the gfy genre. Still the shifters element always makes things a little more buy-able. Still Luke and Mark were adorably cute in a lot of ways.

A lot of the other elements got a bit rushed and happened of screen which was a bit frustrating. I'm glad their are other books in this series because the goings on with Luke's brothers clearly were happening simultaneously and it bugged me to not see them. Still while everything was wrapped up in neat pretty little bows it was still uber sweet and I enjoyed it. :D Overall 3.5 Stars.

I enjoyed this story very much. Both MC's were fantastic and I really loved the fact that even though Luke was the smaller of the two he was really the stronger character. Even though both MC's aren't gay you would never know it considering the instant physical attraction they had to each other. Their acceptance of having a male mate is rather angst free and they act upon their attraction without much thought or concern. I believe that Cody's book will be next but I have to say that I am really looking forward to the eldest brother Kelan's story :)

I enjoyed this book and I think my love of shifters allowed me to overlook at few things that sometimes pull me from the story. The insta-love, though I know it's common with shifters finding their mates, was a little over-the-top for me basically because the two MCs were straight and had never even considered being with a man. I still liked Luke and Mark a lot - they were both beautiful, thoughtful and interesting characters, I just had to make myself ignore the quick "love" aspect for the first few chapters at least.

The storyline was great - I loved the stalker aspect and I think it could have been hashed out a little more but the premise worked for me in big ways. Ethan was a scary guy...and wolf. I also really liked Kelan and his sudden admission of being gay and I can't wait until he finds his mate and I can read his story. I'm also very curious about Cody and his new mate since not much was said in this book. I think this will end up being a great series. (on to the next one :D)

I enjoyed this book, the first in a series of wolf pack brothers, who all happen to be gay, living on a ranch in Houston, Texas. While I normally find insta-love a plot cop-out, this is a shifter story where wolves have mates, so it is easily explained, making it much easier to swallow.

The first book in the series focuses on youngest brother Luke, just home from collage. Luke is not gay, but soon realizes he has a male mate, Mark, who is also not gay. It takes all of 5 minutes for this to not matter one bit with our MC's. And gives us some pretty hot first-time M/M sex to enjoy for the rest of the book. *giggle*

Throw in a little bit of angst, hurt/comfort, a big-bad-bully and you've got yourself a pretty enjoyable read!

Recommended.

I really liked the couple, and this is what I would call gay for you. There was a nice bit of drama, but nothing too angsty. This was just right. And although it's not my favourite, I'm so glad I read it.

Vampires and werewolves – I love reading about them. Werewolf books seem to follow a theme: sexy alpha male, submissive partner and hot animalistic sex. Nothing wrong with that and Luke’s Surprise adheres to all these themes. Luke Morgan is home from college visiting his brother Kalen’s ranch when he meets his mate. He had expected it to be a woman as he was straight, but it turns out fate is a quirky bitch, and in actuality his mate is a man. Both Mark and Luke fight the attraction for all of about 2 pages, then quickly fall into lust and love with one another. Enter another werewolf, Ethan, who wants Luke for himself and we have the villain of the book attempting to drive a wedge between the two newly bonded mates.

There are no real surprises in this book. We have the typical tropes of bonding, mates and Gay-For-You werewolves in Luke’s Surprise. Now I am not knocking these clichés, as I happen to love them, but after a while they can get predictable. So I am going to divide up my review into Pros and Cons, in order to better illustrate different aspects of this book.

Pros

-The chemistry between Mark and Luke is page melting. They go from: “You’re a guy and my mate?” to “Yeah, you’re a super cute guy, get over here and kiss me!” I liked their dynamic and Gay-For-You is a personal favorite cliché that Lavania Lewis pulls off really well in this novel. Their sex scenes are perfectly in tune with two men discovering their new-found sexuality and not being able to keep their hands off one another.

-Kalen and Cody. Luke’s brothers are interesting and yes, you guessed it – gay! Both will have books. I especially cannot wait until Kelan’s novel comes out. His ‘coming out’ was my favorite scene in the book. That is one damn fine man who just happens to be pack Alpha.

-I did not figure out the villain’s henchman until the end. I liked being fooled in a suspenseful book; it keeps me on my toes.

-Luke’s Surprise is a fun read. Considering this is the author’s first book, I found the writing to be tight with minimal plot-holes.

Cons

-The antagonist, Ethan. Every book needs a baddie and Ethan is your typical psycho. A self-hating homophobe he wants Luke for himself and makes attempt after attempt to take Luke away from Mark, some of them quite violent. Unfortunately, I found Ethan to be two dimensional and with no real back-story we never get to see his true motivations for wanting Luke. Yes, I know he’s crazy, but I wanted more than that to explain his bizarre behavior.

-Despite this being the author’s first published book, I felt it relied too heavily on the themes for this genre. Nothing was new or original as we had boy (werewolf) meets boy (werewolf), they are mates, good-bye straight life, hello gay bonded mates who immediately love sex and each other. Just one time, I would really like for a straight werewolf to meet another straight werewolf and fight the mating call until the bitter end. Then of course, give in to the hot, animalistic sex and live happily ever after. However, that doesn’t mean I did not like Luke’s Surprise, I did. I just wish it hadn’t followed the formula of a lot of other books in this genre
so closely.

For lovers of m/m werewolf books, I think you will enjoy Luke’s Surprise. The protagonists are cute; the secondary characters – except for Ethan – are interesting in their own right. Plus if you hurry up and read Luke’s story, you will be ready to buy Cody’s Revelation on May 30th and see what the pack Omega gets up to.

This fated mates shifter story is very emotional, set in Rural Texas. Mark Malone and Luke Are two straight men who are fated mates. Mark just started his job as a foreman at the Walker's ranch when he discovers he and Luke are mates and get fired when his boss catches them kissing. Walker's son is a gay sociopath who threaten Luke and Mark when Ethan Walker can't have Luke. because Luke is shorter people think he needs to be protected even though he proves he can win a fight against bigger opponents.

No enthralling plot, insta love that had no special twist... Apart from one or two scenes and this being a shifter PNR, there isn't much I liked about it...

Talk about surprises. What do you as a straight male wolf shifter and you find out your fated mate is a straight man? This is the question that Luke and Mark must answer. Luke moved back home to help out his brother run the ranch. He meets Mark while running errands. Neither can believe that their mate is a man. But they decide to trust their hearts and see what happens. All is going well until someone from Luke’s past makes his presence known. I enjoyed reading this book. I look forward to reading the next one.

I did enjoy this novella. I gave it 2 stars for two main reasons. I wish I could give it 2.5 stars.

First, as a stand alone story there are a lot of holes and I was left feeling a little confused. It is clearly part of a bigger picture that will be developed in future installments. There is a sub-story about anti-gay sentiments in the communtiy. That is not really fully fleshed out. There is also a stalker sub-plot. Honestly, not much happened with the stalker sub-plot.

Second, is because Luke and Mark just accept that they are mated even though they had both been living happily as heterosexual men. Yes, there is some sort of magic involved but it just isn't explained.

I did find myself wondering how Luke and Mark were going to deal with their issues. Luke is a very likable character. He is positive and easy going. I just wanted more character development. I wanted the characters to actually get to know one another. Instead, they just cling to each other because they are "mated".

However, this story is worth reading if you like cowboy, shifter, gay, contemporary romances. It is light reading with fast paced writing. I think Lavinia Lewis has some real skill as an author and I look forward to reading more of her work.

2019 = skim read
2024 = DNF / review written

An insta-love m/m wolf-shifter romance,
that's poorly written and completely ridiculous.

If all three brothers end up with male mates, it should be mpreg. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense—fate wouldn’t let the family line die out. At least one needs to be able to have children. Since they’re wolf shifters, mpreg is a reasonable solution.

The youngest brother finds out his mate is a guy. At first, neither is happy about it. Five minutes later, they’re making out openly on land owned by someone who dislikes gays. Makes sense. 🙄 Of course, it leads to drama, which is clearly what the author intended.

Soon, two straight guys start having sex like pros.
It even says: Luke sucked cock like a pro.
Several sex scenes follow.

The word "cock" is mentioned 75 times. That's a lot for a novella.

🙄 OTT Drama:
▪️Anti-gay people
▪️A crazy stalker who wants one of the MCs at all cost.
▪️Family issues

Overall, the romance was a dud, and the story was too sweet and cheesy with all the tropes thrown in.

I liked this book. Luke is straight and surprised when he meets his mate, another straight male. This book covers a lot of things. There is plain old prejudice. There is a not all that stable type of guy chasing our hero. And there is sex. There is also an awful lot of British spelling & phrasing for a book set in what I believe to be Texas. (I'm talking- tyre, kerb, neighbour...) It was a little distracting.

Also by the end of the epilogue, I know when the next two books are set. This is great, but also awkward since all of a sudden the hero of the next book has met his mate and that's it. Then he is just discussed as if he'd always been there, it was a little awkward.

Usually I have a hard time in gfy if the characters don't face any angst about starting a same- sex relationship but when it's weres, I can overlook it. There was one tiny plot point that seems to be unresolved, but maybe it's discussed in the next book. At the end of the day I liked this story and look forward to picking up the next books.

This was an okay shifter romance without anything to pull it out of the mediocre ... there was no twist or wow factor or brilliant word-smithing ... it was simply a formulaic portrayal of fairly ordinary werewolves with the cliché angst one expects from this genre ... the only time I was moved to any depth of emotional response by this book was when the character of Luke was repetitively referred to as 'pretty' & was given an almost feminine role ... in 'gay-for-you' I find it almost like cheating when one of the characters is feminised to this degree ... if you're attracted to a male then own it ... don't justify it by making one of the characters a chick with a dick so that the gayness can be 'excused' ... being gay or attracted to someone of the same gender never needs to be appologised for or made to appear heterosexual enough to not offend.

This was the perfect read for me after a couple of previous disasters I just read. The characters were sweet and great together, even if they verged on clichéd at times, but it was a great start to a new series and I’m happy I don’t have to wait to read the next one since it comes out today! The only thing keeping this from 5 stars was that everything was just a little too perfect. I don't require angst exactly in my books, to be honest too much puts me off, but everything fell into place a little too easily and the conflict wasn’t too hard to beat either. 3.5 stars.

Wow!I loved this book. I was delighted to receive an early copy and I rate it very highly!
I loved the characters and the dialougue flowed smoothly, it really drew me into their lives. The world building was good and the story was suspensful and kept my attention to the very end.
Luke was so loveable and Mark was great as the alpha male always wanting to protect his young lover. There were a couple of grammatical errors but they were easy to overlook and I am sure that was simply because Lavinia is a newbie, I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

Ms. Lewis' series, Shifters' Haven, is very tightly written and in my opinion must be read in order, starting with book one, Luke's Surprise. By not following the series in order you run the risk of missing some of the subtlety placed call-backs to the previous books.

As a wolf shifter story there isn't too much new or inventive that is added in this book, but what we are given is solid, consistent, and entertaining. I have the next three books in the series in my library and I look forward to reading them.

I happily give Luke's Surprise three stars.

Luke's Surprise
By Lavinia Lewis

When Luke and Mark meet they know they're mates. The trouble is neither of them are gay. After deciding to be together anyway their happiness is darkened by a jealous wolf who has had his eye on Luke for a long time.

I liked Luke and Mark as characters and as a couple, but I didn't LOVE them. If they'd had more angst between them than the first 10 mins of their relationship and there was more between them than constant sex I would have enjoyed the book a lot more.

The book is written in both MC's POV. The angst was on the low side.

The blurb made it seem there would be an issue that Mark & Luke are fated mates but they are both not gay. But Mark & Luke dispenses with it very quickly and makes it a non issue. This takes away any potential conflicts that would have made the story more interesting. Some of the plot & the characters felt a bit cliched. This is still a moderately nice light story if you're looking for that sort of thing.
