98 Individual & Partner Skill-Building Math Games

Rate this book
Introduction

The easy-to-use math games in this collection are intended to reinforce basic facts and build student confidence with math skills.

The games are a mixture of individual and partner games but also work well for review in small groups or for class review if the materials are available in the quantities needed. Many have simplified rules since their initial introduction.

Games range from easy to more complex and have suggested options. They include addition and subtraction with some multiplication and simple division as well. Most can be played in 10-20 minutes and require little supervision once the rules are understood. Some games include a written component that may be collected.

Supplies needed for games include decks of playing cards, dice, paper and pencils, game boards, clear markers, basic facts cards, and, occasionally, a timing device and wipe off marking pens.

Copies and Storage

Laminate the game boards and the game rules separately so students can refer to the rules without disrupting the game board or any markers in play. A plastic sleeve or laminating the games boards will keep the games usable for a longer time.

Use playing cards with a variety of ‘designs’ on the back of the cards to make sorting card decks easier for students when multiple decks are used in a single game.

To reduce the noise of dice on tables, consider using foam dice or a desk mat to provide a quieter game. A square of cork board or felt square makes an inexpensive mat.

Consider storing the game materials in an easy-to-locate space so students can gather materials on their own. All game boards may be reprinted as needed.
