After a selfless sacrifice lands him in a technologically-advanced world quite unlike his own, Ewen Brystone finds himself irrevocably alone, lost to time and space. Despite being picked up by the military contractor group Sundown and accepting his fate, Ewen quickly discovers that while it is common in his world to be gifted with Power, he alone carries such magic in this realm.

When word gets out that Ewen’s gift might be the key to ending all war, Sundown is forced to abandon its work and go into hiding, traveling across the planet to safeguard its newest and most enigmatic member.

As humanity struggles to survive in a dystopian nightmare wrought with climate crises, corporate corruption, natural disasters, and enduring war and the United Nations Federation seeks to transport humanity off planet, Ewen and Sundown begin feverishly working to alter Earth’s destiny.

Kara D. Wilson has been writing creatively since the young age of 13. It has always been her dream to become a prominent, young adult author. In 2012, Kara's first novel, The Regent's Daughter, was published.

Kara prides herself in writing strong, realistic characters who, despite their flaws and weaknesses, are relatable and personable. No matter the realm, she works to find a balance between the grit and harshness of reality and the fantasy of engaging characters and plots. Because Kara believes that reading a book should not only be an adventure but an experience wherein the reader learns and grows with the protagonist, she continuously emulates real-world problems and contentious issues to encourage young and new adults to look beyond themselves.

Additionally, Kara is an enthusiastic advocate for young and budding writers. Because she did not have much guidance as an adolescent, she encourages young writers to come to her for tips, tricks, and advice. If you're an aspiring writer, contact her!

Kara graduated from the University of Arkansas with an MA in Communication. In her free time she enjoys playing piano, hiking, watching Japanese animation (anime), teaching ESL, and working on her next novel. 4

As I began reading this novel I became delightfully aware that Ewen Brystone, the main character from the last book of the author’s Aurora Chronicles fantasy series, had shifted into the science fiction universe of Ms. Wilson’s 2020 novel Cardinal Zero. At the end of The Dragon’s Son, book five of the Aurora Chronicles, Ewen manifested such enormous psychic powers defending the people of his realm that he found himself propelled into an inexplicable new reality, which Breach Effect soon discloses as a future dystopian Earth. In this setting Ewen’s psychic teleportation powers are interpreted in scientific and rational terms, but are still ultimately misunderstood by Earth’s warring factions, with disastrous results.

Tightly plotted and fast-moving, with a compelling story arc, Breach Effect explores Ewen’s struggles finding his way through an entirely different culture, and maturing through his discovery of unexpected aspects of his power. The author plays to her strengths in describing the complexities of first contact, of learning the language and ways of alien civilizations, a theme she explores a great deal in many of her other novels. In Breach Effect fantasy and science fiction genres link not only two of the author’s universes, but also hint at another of her series, the Falkrow Narratives, branching into the future from this story. In addition, at its conclusion Breach Effect provides some intriguing backstory to the Aurora series.
