This book is the first comprehensive survey of the African-American experience. It draws on recent research to present black history in a clear and direct manner, within a broad social, cultural, and political framework. Life in sixteenth-century Africa, slavery, the antislavery movement, The Civil War, emancipation, and reconstruction. For anyone who is interested in an in-depth exploration of African-American history as it relates to U.S. history.
I am currently taking a class about slavery, and this book was the required reading for it. The book was really informative, giving history of Africa as well as a lot of information about enslavement. I normally do not enjoy the textbooks required, but this one was good.
I am going to reread it, and read it again. Very well written. 💯 -Great Citations, and references to historical sites in the United States, at the end of each chapter. Loved it.
Though it was for a class I thoroughly enjoyed how well written and factual this book was. The timeline presented gave me a much more in-depth and truthful story of what happened leading up to and during the early years of the slave trade. It dispelled common rumors plainly and gave well researched reasons why. I plan to buy this book for my home library as the e-book for class has expired for me.
