Author Victor L. Martin was born in Richmond, Virginia and raised in Selma, North Carolina and Miami, Florida. He is a former US Marine and currently resides in North Carolina.
Author Victor L. Martin has written a powerfully descriptive novel about circumstances, coincidences and consequences. He involves readers in the lives of four individuals – Ghetti, a young hustler looking to retire; Mance, a business owner that knows the streets; Volanda, a homicide detective; and Amanda, a wife dealing with her insecurities. Each has a secret, an explosive secret. As their lives become intertwined, things get complicated and the deceptions grand.
Martin gives readers a well-paced tale laced in drama, suspense and sex. I couldn’t wait to continue reading because of wanting to see how each character’s story was going to unfold and how it would impact others. Martin did a great job of keeping readers’ attention to the very last page.
The only thing I didn’t care for was how many female characters were described by their body measurements (32C-27-40, 36C-25-35, and 34B-25-42). Unless she’s a model, the average woman doesn’t describe herself as such. And I’m scared of the man that does. Most don’t even know their measurements beyond their bra size. On the flipside, I liked that his characters, particularly Ghetti, were flawed and vulnerable yet likeable and not over the top. I also liked the incorporation of HIV/AIDS awareness and safe sex practices. It’s sorely lacking in much of street lit today.
This was my first read by Victor L. Martin. Heard his name before but he was with The Clown Posse and I don’t support foolishness. I am glad to see he’s moved on. I’m also glad that I gave him a shot and I look forward to reading more from him.
After being stuck-up for his drugs and money, Ghetti, a young hustler, soon realizes his “boy” set him up. Ghetti catches up with the men that robbed him and after murdering them, he goes on the run. Ghetti is hell-bent on getting revenge on the person that set him up and ultimately rats him out to the cops.
Mance, Ghetti’s cousin, owns and operates the local barbershop. He is engaged to be married. When Ghetti finds out who the lucky woman is that is to wed his cousin, will Ghetti be able to trust Mance? Is blood really thicker than water?
Amanda and Volanda are two homicide detectives working the double homicide. Amanda is married and is suffering from depression. Volanda has a secret and she prays that her past will not affect her future. Will both Amanda and Volanda’s personal lives interfere with the investigation?
GRAND DECEPTIONS by Victor L. Martin is a story of greed, lust, love, lies, betrayal and murder. Mr. Martin does an excellent job in weaving together the characters and showing how sex degrees of separation come into play. One thing I was really impressed about is that in GRAND DECEPTIONS Mr. Martin made it a point to touch on the topic of safe sex and the dangers of having unprotected sex. Something a lot of urban/street literature books fail to touch upon.
The plot of “Grand Deceptions” unfolds around four characters whose lives become connected after the actions of one sets things in motion. Reading the book is easier than describing it. I like multi-layered stories were plots, subplots and characters intertwine, so this was right up my alley. “Grand Deceptions” was a satisfying page-turning read. I’ll be checking for Mr. Martin in the future.
This book is so crazy because the people were hiting each other. The people in the book were in a gang. A girl named Amanda has everthing that she wants. Her husban has 800,000 money. People were killed.
