Primal: Vigilante Justice, despite the unfortunate title, is an excellent post-apocalyptic novel by E. J. Deen. It's set in After-Revolt(AR) America, after a plague that is a form of HIV has been released on the population, throwing the nation into chaos.
Our protagonist, Zach, is an enigma at first. The book, while definitely an action thriller, is also driven by his character development throughout the novel. Little things that accumulate to effect change on his motivations and personality. He is a very well written character.
The whole thing starts pretty slowly, with several large info dumps, but as the novel progresses the writing becomes more skillful and Deen starts really showing us her paces. The tale of Zach's past is interwoven into the story through a series of flashbacks and dreams, but it's also woven into Zach's day to day life. Things he avoids and things that catch his attention or jar his senses are all hints at his past life.
I do have a few problems with it, and only one has anything to do with the book. It was a little bit short. For the 2.99 price point, I expect to be reading for longer than an evening. This might not be everyone's opinion, though.
My other problem is a personal one, which is that if I was not given this book to review, I would have never read it. E. J. Deen, pen-name of Cassandra Blizzard, is a medium, which is a profession that I don't approve of on moral grounds. However, if you don't have my hang ups, then I would really encourage you to check this book out. It held me captive for hours on end.
You know that it must be really great when all I can complain about is the price, the title, and the author.
All in all this is a great book that I would encourage anyone to read, provided they are fine reading about violence, rape, and the general madness that goes along with post-apocalyptic fiction.
