This is a book you pick up and read a story here, or a story there. One story that stands out in my mind is about Rosa Goldberg, during WWII in a Jewish Ghetto in Shanghai, China right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Japan took control of Shanghai. The story picks up with Rosa Goldberg, an older woman, who would place her 3-legged stool in the alleyway each morning as the children and adults were leaving the Ghetto for school, errands or work. Rosa was friendly and knew each person by name, and as they emerged from their shabby accommodations she greeted each of us with a cheerful smile, a warm twinkle in her deep-brown eyes and in her “Jewish delicatessen” English accent dispatches us on our way with one bit of wisdom or another. Her message to me never varied. Each morning as I was on my way to our makeshift warehouse classroom, she would stop me, reach out her hand to grasp mine, pull me to a stop beside her side, look up into my face, and ask “So! What does Mrs. Goldberg tell you every day, little girl?”
Knowing her game well, I shook my head, voiced a quiet I-dont’ know, and waited.
“Well, darlink, Mrs Goldberg will have to tell you again. Now listen and remember what I’m telling you” she instructed. “Go out and make a miracle today. God’s busy, he can’t do it all.” Her face beamed up at me and she let go of my hand and gave me an encouraging pat on the back before sending me on my way. To this moment, every day of my life, each time I leave my house, I hear the raspy, heavy voice of Rosa Goldberg, calling to me, and I remember to go out and make a miracle today, God’s busy, he can’t do it all. This is the beautiful story I want to remember from this book!

Не знам кой е решил нелепо да издаде тази книга на български през 2015г. Истории от 50-те, 60-те и 70-те на миналия век, преизпълнени с хуманизъм, алтруизъм, наивитет и божествена светлина, на жени, с подозрителни професии като лектори, мотивационни инструктори, семейни консултанти, арт-терапевти и какви ли не други дивотии. Чувствам се силно замаяна и интоксикирана от цялата тая "позитивна енергия", нахлула в живота ми. Тия гуру-шарлатании са вървели винаги в Щатите, ама отсам Атлантика? През 2015 година?? Искам си обратно изгубеното време! :)

This is a sort of Chicken-Soup sort of book with a series of memoir-type snippets of people's lives meant to uplift and encourage women (written by women) to hang in there and do their best. While most of the stories were quite heart-warming and full of admirable strength and courage, they were also quite dated (published in 1997) from a time, past, where people were attaching themselves to "motivational speakers" so they could feel good about themselves and get ahead in life. I think with the advent of Youtube and the downfall of some of the motivational speakers (like Tony Robbins, who I was shocked to hear use the f--- word multiple times in a youtube recording of one of his presentations) has made this idea rather quaint.

And, too, I do believe that many of us-- older women in particular-- have moved away from the competitive, striving spirit of that age. Or maybe I live in a bubble?

Nope. One "inspiring" story is about a woman falling in love with her car. Another is about a grown woman who had a screaming for on Christmas because her daughter spent more money in the dogs treat even though the mother's gift was something she knew she would love. Another one is about a found girl who gets handed those colouring pages that you colour in and she doesn't colour it in. She scribbled wildly all over the page. Her teacher told her that she was supposed to colour it in and she immediately gave up drawing forever "because of what she said to me!" She later wrote quilting books and she put this story into the book as an f***-you-look-at-me-now to the teacher. Not inspiring. Not heartwarming. Any story positive or negative is accepted.

Okay, let's be honest- this is not that heart-warming or uplifting as the title makes it sound to be. It's nice, short... one to three pages maximum... stories with some positive messages. I would give it a 3-star max but considering it was a good bathroom read for me, I gave it a star more :D

This book follows the idea of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books; little stories from a collection of authors. Some were great, most were good. There were a few that were a bit too preachy for me. Overall, a great little book.

This book was full of short stories that for the most part, were uplifting. But only a few stood out to me...Black Belt in Dating was about a woman who goes out on all sorts of dates until she finally finds the right guy; Joe's Picture is an old but good story about a student who keeps a picture he drew in 4th grade, and the teacher who sees it again when she learns of his passing; A Jewel from Mrs. Goldberg and The World Upside Down are stories from World War II; The Magic of Anger reminds us when you really want to change your life, you can; Waste Not Want Not showed us a glimpse of a simpler time; and Cried my eyes out during Intensive Caring. Only one story bothered me...Doorway of Destiny. Did the author go to her homeless father and help him? Or did she make amends with him only in her mind and walk away?
