This is a collection of short stories and poetry written during the Covid pandemic. It has been an extraordinary period of lockdowns, silence and death. Wearing surgical masks beneath anxious eyes, we manoeuvred around each other in the streets and supermarkets. We spoke to each other on video apps and listened in horror to news of the mounting death toll. A shroud of silence cloaked my neighbourhood, and the natural world came into sharp focus. My writing focused at first on the immediate crisis and the strange stillness of my world. Then escapist themes surfaced as I tried to make sense of it tales of the past; speculation about our uncertain future; and stories of life, love, and death. The relief at the fading of the pandemic has been short-lived. Recovery from the social and economic damage caused has brought challenges. Then Vladimir Putin began a barbaric war which has cast a dark shadow over the free world. In these times of darkness, we are looking for signs of a safer life, a better world. We are all looking for light.
