A nice companion book to Misty of Chincoteague, one of my favorite childhood books. I've always wanted to go to these islands someday (apparently not during summer when the flies and mosquitoes are ferocious). This picture book gives a little tour in the meantime.

Awesome photos and information about these wild ponies. Great companion to Henry's book, Misty of Chincoteague. This is a great book to use for nonfiction units.

This story is about Assateague Island and the wild life that lives there. It talks about the life cycle of the horses, as well as how the horses live. It also talks about what they are doing during each season of the year. The story also talks about the other animals that live on the island, like birds, snakes, and crabs. It talks about the importance of the salt marsh land for the animals' survival. The book talks about the dangers of people interacting with the wild horses. People are putting the horses in danger by feeding them or hitting them with cars. There are photographs on every page about the animals on Assateague Island.
This story would be great to read during a unit on wild animals. It shows the importance of the environment that animals live in, and it explains the cycle of animals affecting the lives of other animals. This story could open up a discussion about how to save the environment by lessening the impact that humans have on the planet. This story would be especially interesting to students who like animals and especially horses.
