Seasonal fishermen dared not venture to the southern side of Fogo Island, in central Newfoundland, for fear of an encounter with the Beothuk. That was before John Holmes. In 1823 he took the chance and set up tilts in Seldom Come By. Five years later he became its first permanent settler. This is his story.

Great Newfoundland book written about my 4th great grandfather and how my family ended up coming from England to Fogo Island Newfoundland. Sets you up to feel compassion for the main character then ends in compassion for the Beothuk.
