So I adore the series Hitorijime My Hero, so I was intrigued to read the manga it was spun off from (Hitorijime Boyfriend was written 2 years before My Hero)
This focuses on Kensuke and Hasekura.
Started with some trepidation because of suspected dubious consent / non-con content. And can confirm there is some present in this volume so many may wish to skip it.
It was dealt with in a strangely, light feel? Struggled to understand what Kensuke was doing/feeling most of the time. As confused as he himself seemed. I think he forgave Hasekura much too quickly and easily. It was... Odd, reading it.
Whole thing was a bit odd to be honest. Especially since there were character changes compared to My Hero.
Hasekura is pretty much the same character to be fair.
Kousuke is the same too as far can see for a side character in this manga.
Kensuke seems drawn looking slightly older? And seemed... slightly more mature? In this than in My Hero. Not by much but he definitely seems more happy go lucky and child like in My Hero than in Boyfriend.
Masahiro is the one that surprised me the most as changed a lot when comparing the two yaoi's. Appeared a lot more cold, cynical, composed, rather than his more emotional expressive worried state that we get to know in My Hero. Its quite a shift in character between the two series.
The art skill/style is a bit different, art seems.. sharper, rougher to the eye, to the smoother lines known in My Hero.
(I know I am comparing it a lot to My Hero but its really hard not too)
I really wanted to like this more... I like the artist, I like the characters (though admittedly a lot more in... yeah you guessed it... My Hero), I didn't like the non-con in this, I'm confused with how Kensuke acts, its interesting to see how Memeko Arii developed her art style in the two years between the series, the differences in the characters, I like seeing those developments and growths and changes that were made, its both intriguing and fascinating in that respect, but I don't like how this pairing started so...
Conflicted is how I would describe my feelings on this manga. It's interesting for what it is but... Yeah...
Definitely prefer the dynamic between Kensuke and Hasekura in My Hero.
And speaking of which, I think I may well start rereading Hitorijime My Hero back from the beginning and appreciate the changes, characters and story more.
