Aurora Abroad

Rate this book
Who hasn’t heard the story of the princess with an unfortunate tendency for coma-inducing finger pricks? And who could forget about the evil witch who wants to kill her by any means necessary, be it spindle or poisonous apple? Who hasn’t rolled his eyes at the thought of Prince Charming and his affinity for tights, tunics and baseless serenades? But the princess we know was never whisked away to a world of magic lamps and genies, and she most certainly didn’t go on a quest with the naked emperor from the Emperor’s New Clothes… until now. Big bad wolves, trolls, frog princes and pirates (among other things) come together in a madcap marriage of classic fairy tales. Hans Christian Andersen wouldn’t be proud! Aurora Abroad is a romantic comedy for all ages!

I'm a rather reclusive author living in Ohio with four cats.
I write super fluffy fluff and darkest grim grimdark. "This author has a strange imagination" was my favorite compliment ever. I hope my strange imagination entertains someone out there!

This was a really fast read on a Sunday afternoon. And it was super enjoyable.

This book is about putting together some famous fairy tales into one story full of twists. I loved this book mainly because of the character of Lyric (the male protagonist). Yes, he was annoying and the swearing and cursing was just too much, but he was still so lovable. The character of Aurora was also well written and I love that she was not portrayed as a weak princess but rather one who fight for whatever cause she believed in.

I also laughed a lot when I was reading this book. There are lots of funny bits in the story. I smiled 10 feet wide on the happy occasions in the story. Well, you know, it's really the kind of book that is able to engage and affect my feelings.

So, yeah, there goes the 5 star!

This is an absolutely lovely book. I was having a great time reading it. All those fairy tales twisted together. I was laughing throughout. Aurora was rather sweet, Lyric was really funny,
Prince Charmaine was funny,I tought I was not going to like Blackbeard, but he turned out to really sweet, Noxor (I laughed when Lyric called him Necksore) was a great character.I even liked Rachelle( although she was rather complaining.) and Greta was rather sweet. It really had an unexpected ending. A really good novel. I'd like to read more works of the author. A very good book. :)

I'll be honest, it could have done with a proof reader. If only because of the number of spelling and layout errors in the ebook I read. That said, it was an enjoyable book - perfect for commuting, and I did want to keep reading. The weaving of fairytales in and out of the narrative was very clever, and even though the payoff was obvious from very early on, the way the characters were written meant I didn't mind. I'd have been more annoyed by a twist at the end. It's not brilliant, but I enjoyed it none the less.

Haha I really loved this very humorous tale about Aurora, the princess who had been cursed at birth by her evil aunt, who was a powerful witch and had consequently lived secreted away, to be brought up humbly by her other three aunts. Aurora loved her humble and simple life, but her aunts were panicking as her eighteenth birthday was due, and the curse would kill her. They send her away with a time spinner which is meant to save her in times of dire trouble, however little did she know that most of the trouble she ended up in was due to this same spinner. Aurora's tale is a re-telling of many a fairy tale with Ms. Lewes giving this a comedic slant, as she introduces her to pirates, talking frogs, funny prince's and so much more making this a very romantic and magical story to read no matter your age. As always with Ms. Lewes writing after all the mess we get the untangling to reach a very satisfying and happy ending all round. Enjoy, I know I did.

Got better as it went along

Although this book started out feeling like a Disney parody fan-fic, it finally developed its very own sense of charm. Also, initially, the switching back and forth between high fantasy language and modern language was jarring, but the story finally found its own voice. It ended up being a fun, cute read.

This is one of the most overall fun books I have read in a while. So many fairy tales are woven together in a delightful, entertaining way that it is amazing. I also love the fact that although the heroine has a lot of help from others on her journey, she is very much self sufficient.

This was a fun book to read. It had a whole bunch of fairy tale references in it - even pirates! Lots of interesting characters and situations. Highly recommended.

Aurora Abroad... I don't know how this book seemed to twist everything I hate in a novel and make me continue reading. No other story I've read had this many things I consider awful, but then again, I kept reading because of the obvious charm. And, in the end, I think it was worth it.

This book had many, many things I absolutely hated. Every second page was full of innuendos and awkward scenes that make me roll my eyes. The suggestive dialogue made me wince (so, so unnecessary) along with the many encounters of pointless swear words (I understand it's a expression of speech, which is wonderful when utilized correctly, but wasn't the case in this book). The pages give me a headache as I strongly dislike "shouting" in dialogue to be written in capitals. Likewise, I strongly oppose the whole "?!" at the end of every sentence. You either have a exclamation mark or a question mark; choose one only. The dialogue was occasionally very bland, and I found myself questioning which character was speaking (as there was no rational way to tell them apart). I spent most of the book wondering who the target audience was; children? Adults? Teenagers? It seemed to crossover between audiences, with both expressions and messages. Most of these were things I consider inexcusable in any other book.

However, somehow the overall charm outweighs everything else. You see, the characters were so lovable, and somehow even the most typical archetypes seemed fresh and new. Nobody was portrayed as a flawless character, and nobody was portrayed as a completely imperfect one. The overall plotline was so incredible and wacky, I couldn’t help getting into it. Fairy tales were flawlessly combined with new, unique twists on the original ones. I also loved how each of the wacky stories contributed to the message the book tried to get across. And as for the villain, well, I thought the climax was a little too predictable (and simple) but it somehow worked for a cute little happy ending. The villain’s motives were expressed, clearly, and was a twist of an original fairytale which was enough to provoke sympathy.

Overall, although I greatly enjoyed this novel, I found a lot of my pet-peeves within its pages. I loved the characters and the unusual plot, and although some of the dialogue fell flat (and tries to be humourous, yet falls short) it was still a cute, fun read (in an odd way)

This is a really fun and cute story that everyone will enjoy!

Since I was a little kid, I've never really liked princess Aurora, in fact I've always thought she was boring. But there are a lot of people on Goodreads who enjoyed this book, so I decided to give it a try. And it certainly didn't disappoint.

In this sweet fairy tale story, Aurora travels around the world to escape from her evil aunt Maleficient who, we all know, wants to kill her. As the story progresses she meets lots of people, some really weird creatures, and she also finds her true self. Yeah, I know it sounds just like an average and ordinary story, but I really liked it. I think it's a good YA adventure/fairy tale retelling book; it may not be one of those books that surprises you with twists and turns, but it has so many characters that you will easily get attached to. So, Aurora Abroad is definitely a character-driven book, and kudos to the author for creating such wonderful and enjoyable characters!

This book made me change my opinion about Aurora. She's not like the disney princess who falls in love at first sight. She is tough, and not fond of romantic poems. I really like how she's completely oblivious to Lyric's feelings for her. The two constantly bicker and argue, and are just so cute together. Even though Lyric isn't really my type of fictional boyfriend (because he's too whiny), I think he's really perfect for Aurora. He's brave and kind. Well, not at first.

I love how the author mixes tons of different fairy tale stories in this book: Rapunzel, Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, you name it! This book has it all! So, if you love fairy tales you should definitely pick up this book!

Aurora Abroad is very much a twisted fairy tale, or at least a load of fairy tales all in the one pot and linked seamlessly together.
Sleeping Beauty won't sleep, she will die, The Emperor is having to run around naked due to a wish that went wrong thanks to a Genie and Prince Charming is really, REALLY vain.

It's a pretty awesome book all round, the adventures Aurora gets into and Lyric (That's the Emperor's name) ends up meeting her and joining her is rather hilarious. The romance aspect is there, but it's not so in your face, the adventure of the whole story really takes you in.
Of course the negative part to the book is that it's rather predictable and you could see what was going to happen or what fairy tale would turn up next. Although I suppose that is to be expect, it would have been nicer to have made the reader a bit clueless about it until halfway through. As well as that, the ending seemed a bit anti-climatic, it was building up so much and then... well it didn't happen.

I did enjoy reading this book though, it was nicely thought out and it had a lot of fairy tales all put into it and just twisted enough to revamp it, although the Genie was rather similar to Disney's Aladdin's Genie; although perhaps that was the point?

Everyone would enjoy reading it, there is a bit of violence in it, but it's nothing too bad so this book would be really nice for Young Adults to read as well.

It seems I've been in the mood to read "riffs" on Fairy Tales this year. This one is actually one of the better ones.

It pulls in various well-known tales, but doesn't let them take over the storyline. In fact, sometimes it's hard to tell which fairy tale is being referred to until it "concludes." (I'm personally fond of the princess from the "Princess and the Pea" who goes on to be the beauty in "Beauty and the Beast...all without being the main protagonist or getting in the way of the plot.)

Each of the main characters is a fairly well defined individual with understandable motives and growth. The one exception is the Evil Aunt, who is just over the top...but works in this instance.

Strangely enough, I noticed no grammar/spell-check errors which either means that the plot/characters had drawn me in completely, or there were so few they didn't stand out. Hmm... for that alone, maybe I should give this 5 stars.

This was such a fun read -- I didn't want to put it down after I started it! I love how Ms. Kiefer put such a different spin on many traditional fairy tales, making them humorous and touching while definitely keeping the feel of the originals. She is an excellent writer, and I thoroughly enjoyed her style. Aurora is a different kind of fairy tale heroine, and her hero -- such as he is -- the emperor Lyric is certainly one of a kind. I have to admit Lyric was my favorite character and made me laugh out loud a number of times (both with him and especially at him). I think Ms. Kiefer did a terrific job of making interesting and unique characters, and she kept the action moving quickly so there was never a dull moment. This was such a great story, with a surprise twist at the end I never saw coming, I can't even choose my favorite part. I would love to read more of the adventures of Aurora, but will keep my fingers crossed that she lives happily ever after.

The was a very well written hodgepodge of fairy tales merged into a wonderfully funny tale. Aurora' on the run from the evil witch Medea, and meets a few other fairy tales on the way. The Emperor from the Emperors New Clothes, the Princess and the Pea, trolls, humanoid pigs, the three bears, he big bad wolf, and Blackbeard to name a few. The story flowed well from one encounter to the next, and an unlikely romance is forged. I love how all the tales tied to one another so smoothly. The Emperor learns so much, and changes to be a better man by the end until he truly is worthy of Aurora. I also like that Aurora wasn't some simple cheerful maid, but had some backbone, and a sharp tongue at times. The flaws in each character made them all so endearing. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Such a cute fairy tale retelling. If you couldn't guess from the name, this one is about Sleeping Beauty/Aurora. Pays homage to a lot of fairy tales while still being it's own unique story. It took awhile to get used to the modern language being used by fairy tale characters, but once I was used to it I kind of enjoyed the flair it brought to the story. The romantic in me just loved the way it ended. :)

Take a fairy tale, and turn it upside down, and then mix it in with lots of other fairy tales and you get something like Aurora Abroad, but not as funny or entertaining. This story is definitely for the modern day reader, preferably an adult. There is some romancing, but it's kept rated G, or maybe PG-13 if you're overly sensitive and stretch it a bit, but it's still nice.

I really enjoyed this book. It twists all of the fairy tales together. I loved Aurora as a character. She was a strong character who showed kindness to others. I didn't really like Lyric at first because all he did was complain. As the book went on though he grew on me. If you like to read fairy tales then I would highly recommend this book.

Cute YA novel featuring a strong "Princess" heroine and twisted takes on various fairy tales. The romance was a bit predictable, but there were a few surprises and a lot of humor.

If this book went through some editing and revisions, I'd give it 4 stars, but only 3 stars with all the grammatical errors.
