Yet in poems such as "Rara Avis" and "At the Corner of Sunset and Morningside" she places herself uniquely within her own landscape, at her own desk, and in her own voice. Other poems such as "My Parents Meet at La Grande Place," or "My Grandfather's Last Bird" connect language and family as a fractured heritage, one that has allowed for "a split of words, a splice of vows," as the poet writes in "Sweet Asylum."
This book does an extremely thorough job of summarizing major works on girls and comparing/analyzing different perspectives. If I were teaching an Intro Women's Studies class, this would be a top pick for texts. It's a primer of sorts. I wish it had been more hard hitting about the texts it explores, but perhaps the point was more to encapsulate, not take apart, what's out there. I think it's remarkable that we live in a world where a Girls Studies book now exists! That was one of the coolest parts of reading this book!
